CARSON CITY — The Carson High School Wind Ensemble and Midnight Blues Jazz Ensemble performed in southern California taking home numerous awards at last weekend’s Music in the Parks Festival.

CARSON CITY — The completion of the transcontinental railroad in the spring of 1869 changed America forever, dramatically reducing the time and cost for people and goods to move across country and accelerating the western expansion of the industrial revolution.

The event lineup features the RSVP Spring Celebration and Carnival kickoff and family night at Mills Park, a Healthy Communities event in Silver Springs, CASA volunteer information hour workshop, an afternoon hike along the Ash Canyon trail, art demonstrations, live music and more. In collaboration with the ESL In-Home Program, the Carson City Library offers free citizenship classes. The 12 classes will help prepare participants for the Naturalization Test by providing information, guidance, and individual support. Classes starts May 4th, every Saturday from 10am-12pm on the second floor of the Carson City Library located at 900 N. Roop St.

The May series of Northern Nevada Development Authority's The Business Edge will focus on "The Next Step: Workforce Retention and Succession" on Wednesday, May 22, at the Carson Valley Inn in Minden.

NNDA’s The Business Edge is a monthly educational series providing information on issues and trends of interest to the northern Nevada business community.

With the goal of returning the railroad to operation this summer, the Carson City Railroad Association will be hosting Saturday track repair work sessions in Mills Park. CCRA would like to extend an invitation to any able-bodied volunteer willing to be a Gandy Dancer for a few hours on the Carson City and Mills Park Railroad.

Residents nominated Carson City for a generous $5,000 grant offered through the Domino’s Paving for Pizza campaign. Paving for Pizza is a creative nationwide initiative to award nominated cities funds to fill potholes. Carson City Public Works proudly accepts this award and is honored to be chosen based on the thoughtful nominations submitted by Carson City’s residents. The courteous gesture of nominating Carson City is praiseworthy.

This weekend, grab mom and the family and come on out to the annual Mother’s Day Plant Sale hosted by The Greenhouse Project, located on the campus of Carson High School.

Due to the event’s growing popularity, the sale is expanding to both Friday, May 10, 2:30 to 5 p.m. and Saturday, May 11, 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

We have activities throughout the region today, including a history presentation in Dayton, a Holocaust memorial service at the Governor's Mansion, art classes, live jazz and more. We want to send a big birthday "shoutout" to our outdoor editor emeritus Don Quilici, who turns 85 today. A murder investigation that has baffled Washoe County investigators for more than three decades has been solved thanks to new DNA technologies and some incredibly hard work by a team of law enforcement investigators and genealogists.

Every child needs a hero, but abused children need superheroes! Court Appointed Special Advocates, also known as CASA, will hold information hours on Thursday, May 9 and again Thursday, May 16 in Carson City.

Blu Jaz will perform this Friday and Saturday, May 10-11, at Bella Fiore Wines in Carson City. The four-piece band has quite a following. Blu Jaz performa a steady diet of blues and jazz coupled with a few dance upbeat songs.

They're becoming somewhat a fixture at Bella Fiore Wines, located at 224 S. Carson Street in the McFadden Plaza. The band consists of Myke Smith, on saxes, Bradley Harris, guitarist and harmonica, Paul Bonaldi, on drums and Tim Goldsmith on bass.

The capital city will celebrate Tinseltown, classic cinema and raise money for Carson City school art programs at the 5th annual Hollywood Gala on Saturday, May 18 with the theme "A Star is Born" hosted by Carson City Classic Cinema Club.

CARSON CITY — Since the early 1980s, May has been a month for celebrating historic preservation and archaeology in Nevada. This May, the Nevada Department of Conservation & Natural Resources’ State Historic Preservation Office encourages Nevadans to explore and discover the amazing historic and archeological resources that exist throughout the State.

On Saturday, May 4, volunteers joined Lyndsey Boyer, the Carson City Parks, Recreation & Open Space Senior Natural Resource Specialist and Marenna Disbro, the Carson City Weed Coalition Coordinator to help pull 80 pounds of poison hemlock around Bailey’s Pond.

The Carson City Cultural Commission will be holding a meeting on May 13, beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the Sierra Room of the Community Center, located at 851 E. William Street.

The Cultural Commission will be making recommendations to the Redevelopment Authority regarding Arts and Culture Special Event funding, according to their meeting agenda.

Kicking off its 2019 season, V&T Railway will hold a special Mother’s Day train on Saturday, May 11 and Sunday, May 12. Guests will experience a 24-mile round-trip ride through the historic Comstock, departing Carson City (Eastgate Depot) at 10 a.m. and will arrive in Virginia City at approximately 11:30 a.m., before returning to Carson at 4:15 p.m.

The beasts of Africa will be highlighted during a wildlife photography presentation to the Carson City Leisure Hour Club on Wednesday, May 15. Presented by Patrick Pevey and Carol Grenier for the first time, club members will share in the experiences of seven trips to Africa.

CARSON CITY — A contingent of high school students from across the Silver State will be at the Nevada Legislature on Tuesday to celebrate GEAR UP — the Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Program Grant —that is a federally funded, seven-year grant that serves underrepresented students.
