The Carson City School District is pleased to announce Carson High School’s graduation ceremony plan for the Class of 2020.

Carson High School will hold a drive-through ceremony Saturday, June 6, with varying times throughout the day where graduating seniors and their families will stay in their single vehicle until it's time for the graduate to exit their car, have their name announced on the loudspeaker as they walk across a stage erected on the northwest lawn (near the blue and white concrete ‘CHS’ sign), collect their diploma, have their picture taken, return to their vehicle and then proceed to the exit.

Trousers came into being when it was discovered, before Christ, that hand-to-hand combat was most unpleasant while wearing a robe, not to mention the discomfort endured while riding a horse while wearing a robe.

We all remember our first, our first love, our first kiss, our first colonoscopy. The procedure was developed in 1969, but was overshadowed by the moon landing. There were no headlines, "Colonoscopy Arrives! What is it? Don't ask."

During the last week, Lyon County Sheriff’s Deputies in the Dayton Patrol area have investigated a string of burglaries along the Highway 50 corridor in Dayton.

The suspects were targeting closed businesses and breaking and entering those businesses looking for anything of value.

In full disclosure, I opted out of pre-med when confronted with analytical geometry, but have never lost my interest in good health. So I stand in awe of our country's show of courage in our sudden shift of values. A new energy is emerging in America, a new altruism. With the arrival of COVID-19, mastery of fear is our new normal, bravery our new mantle.

They told us the C-rations they were delivering to us leathernecks in Vietnam were prepared and canned for troops fighting long before us in Korea.

It was standing room only earlier this week at Tuesday evening's Carson City School Board meeting thanks to a budget proposal that ruffled more than a few feathers.

President John Cassinelli has announced that Travel Nevada and the Nevada Commission on Tourism have awarded the Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Center a $3,500 rural tourism marketing grant.

Carson City was a 19th century hub for mining, transportation and more. It was the place where a young Samuel Clemens began his literary career, and where his nom de plume Mark Twain was first revealed. Carson City was as Old West as they came.

What I know about gorls you could put in a gnat's ear. It's not because I haven't tried to understand gorls, I have tried to understand gorls. They make great mothers and grandmothers, I know that. But you show me a man who says he understands middle-aged gorls and I'll show you a big fat liar. Though just because we can't understand gorls does not mean we can't love gorls. There is something comforting and contenting about a gorl's voice, a gorl's laughter.

The first Monday of March should bring clearing skies and sunshine after a weekend of wild weather. Activities include a discussion and documentary viewing regarding the high cost of pharmaceutical drugs, plus Read Across America storytime for young children at the Carson City Library, fitness events, West Coast swing dance lessons at Carson Lanes and more.

The Carson City School District is asking parents to mark their calendars for Monday, March 2, to begin registering children who will be 5-years-old by Sept. 30, 2020, and eligible for Kindergarten for the coming 2020-2021 school year.

The first European to see America, so far as we know, was a Norseman named Barney, somewhere around A.D. 986. Barney was wading ashore, holding his shoes, when he encountered some Native Americans who were not in a good humor that particular morning, and they gave Barney the bum's rush. The Carson City School District Pre-K Office is inviting parents to “Save The Date” for three separate parent engagement opportunities and activities for children who will be 4-years-old by Sept. 30, 2020. The three events, dates and times are listed below:

An Evening of Wine, Wisdom and Chili at Tunnel Creek Lodge in Incline Village will feature witty conversation over dinner with adventure stories only Mark Twain and Snowshoe Thompson could tell, on Saturday, Feb. 29.

One of the nice things about portraying characters out of the past is the feeling you get when you stand where they stood and see what they saw. Within this confluence of past and present, there is a palpable kinetic link to be embraced and enjoyed.

Central Lyon County Fire and Storey County fire agencies were called Sunday afternoon to a structure fire in the 300 block of Martin Lane near Six Mile Canyon in the Mark Twain area.

Hands-on learning to make a King Cake! And we will get to taste it as well! A lot of the time involves yeast rising, so we will also be painting on canvas. It's included!
