Yeah, it’s hot out there, but it’s the area happenings that are sizzling. The Carson City Fair at Fuji Park offers a plethora of entertainment for all ages including tractor pulls, a carnival, and farm animals. Under the shade of the Mills Park cottonwoods, you’ll have all day to peruse the varied vehicles in the annual Run Whatcha Brung Car Show. The sun will come out tomorrow, but it’s the stars that are coming out tonight for the free Levitt Amp Concert at the Brewery Arts Center.

Ready for a good time? The Carson City Fair runs all day and culminates with a special concert in the arena starring Journey Unlimited. Car lovers are in for a treat: you can head down to the Carson Mall for their monthly cruise night, or roll into the Max Casino to get registered for the 33rd annual Run Whatcha Brung Car Show. The Trippin King Snakes take the stage in McFadden Plaza for a free all-ages show. Break a leg to the kids of Youth Theater Carson City; they open their production of ‘Bye, Bye, Birdie’ at the Community Center this evening.

Triskaidekaphobia: one of those fun words that I very rarely get the opportunity to use. The fear of the number 13 may be a real thing, but you’ll have no reason to fear boredom on this Friday the 13th. This month’s TRIAD program will explain the various services offered by the Nevada Humane Society, many of them available a low cost. Break a leg to those talented members of our community taking the stage tonight: Senior Follies begins its three-show run this evening.

Let the band play on. Friday night offers some great night-life options for all ages. Fridays at Third continues with an outdoor concert featuring Road Daddy in the McFadden Plaza. Carson Mall plays hosts to their monthly cruise night. come for the cool cars and poker walk but stick around for a performance by Mo’z Motley Blues Band on the patio by Bella Vita Bistro. It’s open mic night at A to Zen; all talents and all ages are invited to show their stuff on the Zen stage.

FRIDAY, June 29: Things to do in Carson City

Carson City again welcomes the Fathers’ Day PowWow to the Stewart Indian School Campus for a weekend of dancing, vendors and crafts, and community. Now, when I say bicycle invasion, I’m not exaggerating. The Carson City Off-Road hosted by Epic Rides brings mountain bike enthusiasts from all over to compete in our hills. You’ll find downtown road-closures to make way for the race routes, a bike expo, beer garden, and a music festival on Saturday. Head up to Western Nevada College to welcome the Journey of Hope Bike Tour.

CARSON CITY — Motherhood inspired Maria Royce to become a teacher. Western Nevada College’s partnership with Nevada State College made those dreams come true without having to place any hardship on her family to realize that goal.

RENO — Nevada Humanities celebrates the 26th anniversary season of Great Basin Young Chautauqua with the Great Basin Young Chautauqua Showcase.

DAYTON — Enrollment is now open for the Frontier Saver Ambulance Subscription Program, provided by the Central Lyon County Fire Protection District to cover costs associated with medically necessary ambulance transportation.

Today we honor those who have not only served, but who gave all in defense of our country. A tribute ceremony at Lone Mountain Cemetery for our Nevadan veterans will begin at 1 p.m. A memorial for our Native American veterans begins at 10 a.m. at the cemetery across the street from the Stewart Indian School. The 10th annual barbecue at Evergreen Gene’s welcomes all comers, and veterans will get 25 percent any of the fun things they find in the shop. Read on below for more happenings today.

Memorial Day weekend is often thought of as the kick-off to summer, but in Northern Nevada we know that the weather is a fickle creature. The weather should be dryer and warmer as the weekend progresses but have back-up plans for your bar-be-que, just in case. CARSON CITY — To celebrate the arrival of several new musical instruments from a $16,000 grant for music education earned earlier this year, Mark Twain Elementary School will host an Orff & Drum Music Open House Tuesday, May 29, at 6 p.m. in the multipurpose room.

The Carson City School District took time at the School Board meeting last night to recognize 22 students with the “Distinguished Student Award.”

LeAnn Morris, Ph.D., lead technology integration specialist with the Carson City School District, recently earned the Certified Education Technology Leader designation by passing a rigorous certification exam. There are only four CETLs in the state of Nevada: two in the Carson City School District and two in the Washoe County School District.

Thirty-eight employees who have worked a collective 750 years at Carson City School District will retire this year. The retirees will be recognized at the school board meeting Tuesday, May 22.

DAYTON — The Central Lyon Fire Protection District is closing open burning for the season with final burning on Sunday, May 20, with a required burn permit.

There will be a lockdown drill this afternoon at Mark Twain Elementary beginning at 1:30 p.m., said Carson City School District spokesman Dan Davis. After the initial drill the students will then walk to the Boys and Girls Club. Phone calls will not be received during this time.

Hold onto your hat, Carson City, we’re in for one heck of a weekend. It’ll be cowboy hats and pioneer bonnets in Genoa for Western Heritage Day. Keep an eye out for Mark Twain, plenty of music, and fun for all. Joanna Kaiser, 3rd grade teacher at Bordewich Bray Elementary School, was honored Tuesday as the Carson City School District’s Educator of the Year. Additionally, Franceska Quintana, para professional IV at Carson Middle School, was recognized as the Classified Employee of the Year for the district.

The number of available foster homes in Carson City is so low right now that siblings cannot reside together in emergency foster care, a local panel of child welfare advocates said.

Dozens of children and families participated Saturday in the annual "My School Color Run" event hosted by Mark Twain Elementary at Mills Park in Carson City.

What better way to celebrate Earth Day and Earth Week than gorgeous weather that you just can’t help but enjoy. Join Muscle Powered and our Parks and Recreation Department at the Silver Saddle Ranch for a presentation and trash mob. Kids will love the Carnival at Bordewich Elementary School, and it helps raise funds for a local Cub Scout Pack. Mark Twain Elementary is hosting their annual Color Run at Mills Park, just make sure to wear a white shirt.

Well, we won’t see any wet stuff today, but the clear skies could mean a nip to the air. You can join Muscle Powered for one of today’s two walks, but I won’t blame you if you’d prefer an indoor activity. Join the Carson Library for coloring night; they have plenty of pictures to choose from. Bobbie Ann Howell is at the center of today’s Artist Reception at the Nevada Arts Council. You’ll hear her discuss her exhibit ‘Vistas and Viewpoints.’ Head down to Pizza Factory to lend a hand to Mark Twain Elementary School: just make sure to mention you are there for the fundraiser.

CARSON CITY — The students of Mark Twain Elementary School will host their third annual community-wide “My School Color Run” Saturday, April 21, 10 a.m. to 12 noon at Mills Park in Carson City.

Nature lovers will find a variety of ways to celebrate the outdoors during Carson City Historical Society’s Earth Day Garden Festival on April 22.

The Carson City Historical Society, along with the Mark Twain Garden Club, the Desert Gardeners and the Sierra Desert Garden Club, is holding a Garden Festival on Earth Day, Sunday, April 22 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month nationwide and throughout Nevada. In Carson City, volunteers recently planted hundreds of blue and silver pinwheels on the front lawn of the Nevada Legislature to bring awareness to child abuse across the Silver State.

National cable and satellite television network C-SPAN is returning to the Nevada state capital this Wednesday and Thursday, April 11-12 to engage the community through interactive demonstrations of its public service resources, a C-SPAN press release said.

One-time Carson City resident Mark Twain once described genuine music as the kind that will "suffuse your system like strychnine whisky."

To experience it, Twain's advice was to "just smash your piano and invoke the glory-beaming banjo!"
