One of the most overlooked pieces of noteworthy scientific advancement buried by the pandemic of 2020 occurred in Uruguay. Yes, right out of Ripley's Believe It or Not, a group of Uruguayan scientists announced that they had successfully modified the genetic makeup of a group of sheep to make them glow in the dark.

Little Monsters Children's Resale Store in Carson City is closing permanently May 25 after almost five years in business, said the Chambers family, who opened the retail operation in the fall of 2013.

Carson Cassie, the mysterious pond monster that appeared multiple times last year in the retention pond located at the corner of Roop Street and Little Lane, has returned to welcome Spring in 2018.

Some people do all of their holiday shopping on Black Friday. Others do their best to avoid shopping completely and spend the day after Thanksgiving relaxing at home. The tone of Black Friday can be equally mixed with retail businesses large and small.

Once the turkey has been devoured, all thoughts turn toward shopping. Shop Small Saturday helps to throw a spotlight on our local gems, and the great gifts you’ll find. New this year is Museum Store Sunday with both the Nevada State Museum and the Nevada State Railroad Museum participating. Carson City is awash with great little shops delivering up all sorts of goodies for your holiday gift list. Shop Small Saturday gives you a fantastic reason to go and check out the hidden gems right here in our valley.

It’s the perfect season for a stroll downtown and the monthly Downtown Business Association’s monthly Wine Walk gives you a great reason. Grab your friends, neighbors, and a light jacket for this Carson City tradition.

The Carson Valley has some great resale and consignment shops that are willing to buy your gently used items or consign them for you in their shops. These are helpful ideas even if you just want to sell your items at a garage sale or on Facebook or Craigslist.

I really hope I’m not required to choose a favorite event. I would be hard pressed to choose between the Nevada Day Parade and the annual Taste of Downtown. Luckily, I can adore them both, and for much the same reason. They are a celebration of community, of Carson City, of our historic downtown and all that it has to offer. In addition to 'The Taste', the Brewery Arts Center goes country with the Southern Drawl Band on its outdoor stage, and Madam Curry leads another downtown Ghost Walk. SATURDAY:

Join your friends and neighbors downtown as more than 30 shops, restaurants, businesses, and organizations stock up on wine and goodies and throw open their doors for the Downtown Business Association Wine Walk. Valentine’s Day is just a week away, and this is the perfect opportunity to find a one of a kind gift for your one of a kind sweetheart. The day is predicted to be sunny around 50 degrees, so it won’t be anything we can’t handle. You'll have until 5 p.m. to hit as many stops as possible before the raffle begins.

They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Pair that with unlimited bowling until noon and you’ve got yourself a great Sunday. The Capital City Community Band performs at the First Presbyterian Church in its annual ‘Let the Band Play On’ concert. Show some appreciation for these talented musicians by making a donation to their group. Games aren’t just for kids, you know. Nerdvana is holding its first ‘Adult Games Night’ this evening, just make sure to bring your ID.

Batten down the hatches, Carson City, there’s a storm a’brewin. Feed your need for culture at the Brewery Arts Center where you’ll find Kenny Arnold’s exhibit ‘Free Your Soul.’ The Metropolitan Opera ‘Turandot’ plays live at the Galaxy Theater. Or enjoy Carson High School’s last performance of ‘And Then They Came for Me: Remembering the World of Anne Frank.’

SATURDAY:

• Little League Registration at the Indoor Facility at Governor’s Field (8am-12pm; open to ages 4-18 as of Aug. 31, 2016 who live in Carson or attend Carson schools; bring original birth certificates and proof of residency)

It’s the last weekend of January: where does the time go? Head out to one of our local hot spots for some food, fun, and friends. The Brewery Arts Center is a triple threat tonight with the Carson High School play, an artist’s show and reception, and bluegrass band: the Dusty Green Bones. Enjoy Josh and Jenera at Living the Good Life while you dine, then stick around for DJ Bobby G. Wish Sassafras a happy birthday at their new location with local favorites, the Trippin King Snakes.

The monthly tradition continues with the Downtown Business Association wine walk. Saturday, Jan. 2, the festivities begin at 1 p.m. This event happens rain, snow, or shine, so bundle up and head out to celebrate a new year with your friends and neighbors.

Wassail: (noun) a festivity or revel with drinking of healths; liquor for drinking and wishing health to others on festive occasions (Verb) to revel with drinking. Tis the season for wassailing all over downtown Carson City. Start Saturday, Dec. 5 off with the Downtown Business Association’s monthly wine walk, and stick around for the first ‘Holiday with a Hero’ Holiday Crawl.

The Downtown Business Association is proud to host a downtown Wine Walk in Carson City every single month. That does mean that you get a mix of rain, shine, and snow throughout the year. Even though highs will be in the low 50s with plenty of sunshine, wear a fall sweater or jacket. You'll have until 5 p.m. to hit as many stops as possible before the raffle begins.

The Carson City Symphony presents their Spring Fling Concert Sunday afternoon, with a special meet-the-soloist discussion in the Sierra Room and pre-concert entertainment in the lobby. Bring the kids; admission is free for those 16 and younger.

Little Monsters Children’s Resale Shop is having their first Annual Spring Sale this Saturday and Sunday, April 12 and 13.

The horror film "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark," currently screening at the Fanango Galaxy cineplex in Carson City and elsewhere in the Tahoe area, stars Bailee Madison as Sally Hirst. She's about 10 or 12, is a bit chubby and has a mean way of not listening to her father Alex Hirst (Guy Pearce) or his wife Kimberly (Katie Holmes).
