I’m in love with sunshiny days. Unfortunately, something cloudy is around the corner, so please embrace what today gives us – as Northern Nevadans, we know that the weather is fickle. Thursdays offer up karaoke at Westside Pour House and Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar – too much fun for a weekday. You may have noticed the hullaballoo at Mills Park; the annual Mothers’ Day Carnival opens tonight, and all of the rides are only one dollar each thanks to the generosity of Dick Campagni’s Carson City Toyota Scion.

So many things deserve to be in this first sentence: do I mention the annual West Side Bike Month Cruiser Ride, make a Star Wars pun about May the Fourth, or focus on the Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony? What I love most about Carson City is our ability to be outdoorsy, patriotic, geeky, and none of the above - all at the same time. If you don’t find something you absolutely have to check out in today’s “Things to Do”, please look at my list again in a day or two, or sometime next week.

The Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada, 813 N. Carson Street, is a downtown staple for anyone with kids. Join them as they celebrate a slew of new exhibits with a free admission day, Saturday, May 6, 10 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Free admission day has been made possible by a sponsorship from Carson City Toyota.

More beautiful weather is on its way. If I seem a little excited about a little bit of sunshine, its because I am, especially after this very long, gray, wet winter. Today we celebrate the Arts in Nevada at the Legislature and salute the painters, potters, makers, sculptors, singers, dancers, actors, writers, poets, and musicians that capture all that is Nevada in their work.

CARSON CITY — Team Captain, the Carson High School robotics team, has returned from an intense four-day competition at the FIRST World Championship. Held April 19–22 in Houston, Texas, the competition brings together the best robotics teams from around the country and around the world.

I hope you didn't blow away. Yesterday's wind gusts were fierce. Take it easy today and enjoy what Thursday has to offer. The monthly lecture at the Nevada State Museum brings Levi Strauss to life. A hike along the Wellness Trail with Muscle Powered will get the blood flowing. Let Chili's take care of dinner and you'll be lending a hand to the Douglas County Special Olympics.

Carson City is smoking hot when it comes to great things to do today. Capital City Farm Days takes over Fuji Park with information and presentations for area schoolkids. The Youth Strings Program is ready to dazzle you their Spring Fling Concert tonight at the Community Center. Photographer Fred Howland goes black and white at a special show at Artsy Fartsy Art Gallery. Join Sassafras in welcoming Country singer/songwriter Savannah King for a special one-night only show. You’ll want to keep reading, this is just a small preview of the day’s offerings.

So much is happening this weekend, that breaking my weekend list up seemed like the only thing to do. Eggs galore, brunches, and family friendly fun is what you’ll find here. Whether you’re in Carson, Douglas, Dayton, or Virginia City – there’s something fun just around the corner. With Easter just days away, the bonnets, baskets, eggs, and bunnies are about to descend. Here is a sneak peek at where to find the fun in Carson City, Douglas, Dayton, and Virginia City. Most all of the egg hunts are free, but I've made sure to include an entry price if one exists. I’ve listed them by start time, and have the town listed first to make an event near you easy to locate.

SATURDAY, April 15:

Strike a pose, Carson City, it’s the Nevada Library Association’s Snapshot Day. Try to swing by today to help your Library capture the many reasons we enjoy them; you may just find something new to explore. Carson High Performing Arts opens their show ‘Godspell’ tonight in the Community Center’s Bob Boldrick Theater. Break a leg to our young thespians; they’ll be performing Friday and Saturday, as well.

Nine years ago, the Kiwanis Club of Carson City, established in 1959, were approached by the Jaycee’s of Carson City. For 30 years they had sponsored and provided the annual Easter Egg Hunt, primarily at Governor’s Field on Easter Sunday.

It’s not the sunny spring weekend many of us were hoping for, but it’s here nonetheless. Start the day at Applebee’s for a Flapjack Fundraiser to benefit the Eagle Valley Middle School Robotics Team. TOCCATA kicks off its 12th season of Bach’s St. Matthew Passion; enjoy free admittance to today’s dress rehearsal at Shepherd of the Sierra Lutheran Church. No matter what your interests, this valley offers something for everyone. Keep reading for this weekend’s options.

SATURDAY:

The Littlest Things in Carson City is more than a petting zoo, it’s a refuge. You’ll find ponies, goats, puppies, ducks, and more at this great non-profit rescue and they are always looking for animal-loving volunteers. Stop by their open house/volunteer orientation this afternoon to check it out. It’s Tartan Day at the Legislature, so don’t be alarmed if you see a few kilts around town. Karaoke at Jimmy G’s, live music at Glen Eagles and Living the Good Life, and Bike Night at Battle Born Harley are just a sample of tonight’s offerings. Read on and you’ll know all that Carson has to offer.

Welcome to Wednesday, Carson City. No reason to wait for the weekend, there’s always something happening around town. Sip and paint for a good cause at Van Gogh and Vino. You’ll need to head to their website to sign up for the special Cold Nose Rescue fundraiser. See what funny-lady Kat Simmons has taught her comedy students at a their debut Showcase tonight. Aspiring cosmetologists have a new local option. Sierra Academy of Style welcomes you to an open house today to meet the owners and instructors.

WEDNESDAY:

I hope nobody thought Thursdays were boring: this list will prove them quite very wrong. Art Galleries galore, an author meet/greet, and book discussion, karaoke, and Bike Night at Battle Born Harley. I love Carson City for the wonderful diversity in our many varied interests. Our local game shop, Hydra’s Lair, invites you to movie night. If Star Wars III isn’t your style, then” our worst fears have been realized. We must move quickly if the Jedi Order is to survive.”

THURSDAY:

Kiwanis Club of Dayton Township hosts its monthly meeting, Wednesday, April 5, at 6:30 p.m. at Dayton Senior Center, 320 Old Dayton Valley Road.

Today is a day to give big. A one day fundraising drive for our favorite non-profit charities is happening right now, whether it’s animals, arts. Kids, veterans, or the environment. Thursdays also mean a fun night at Jimmy G’s Karaoke. The Trippin King Snakes help celebrate everyone with a March birthday at the Cigar Bar (AKA Carson Cigar Co.) If you have a two wheeled mistress, the Bike Night at Battle Born Harley may be up your alley.

Bet your bottom dollar that it will be a great weekend. Wild Horse Children’s Theater finishes up its spring production of ‘Annie, Jr: The Musical,’ so don’t miss your chance to catch these talented kids on stage. Muscle Powered will be out and about for their monthly Trash Mob and invite you to help clean up a little corner of our valley. The Annual Polar Plunge at Zephyr Cove is a brave way to help the Special Olympics raise money, and the costumes get wilder every year. Keep reading and enjoy the weather before the clouds return.

Now that the sun has come out, the month is just flying by. St Patrick’s Day is tomorrow, with the first day of spring on Monday. Find some new art to love at the Artsy Fartsy Artist Meet and Greet. With two story times and Lego Club today, the Carson Library has your little ones covered. Treat yourself to dinner out and lend a hand to the Wylie Animal Rescue Foundation with the Give Back Event at Chili’s. Get that chopper out of the garage and head over to Battle Born Harley for Bike Night with beer pong, pool, and more.

Get your St. Patrick’s green on and come out for the 27th annual Casino Night, hosted by Kiwanis Club of Dayton Township, Saturday, March 18 at Dayton Community Center, 170 Pike St., in Old Town.

“This is one of several fundraisers Kiwanis does each year, including our pancake breakfasts,” said Richard Amrhein, club vice president. “All proceeds are used to support our young people.”

Many beautiful sunny days are ahead of us. I’m sure we haven’t seen the last of the rain and snow, but as the days get longer, it’s easier to be optimistic that spring is on its way. Take advantage of the weather with today’s Muscle Powered Easy Hike. Meet photographer Abe Blair at the Nevada State Museum tonight. Admission is free for the celebration of his exhibit, Beyond Nature’s Light. Head to Carson Cigar Company for a Sake Party with premium sake, raffle prizes, and something delicious to snack on.

The community is invited to attend the 27th annual Casino Night, hosted by Kiwanis Club of Dayton Township on Saturday, March 18 at Dayton Community Center, 170 Pike Street in Old Town.

Happy birthday, Dr. Suess. Help celebrate the author’s legacy by reading your favorite Suessical tome. The Nevada Arts Council has been displaying Las Vegas artist, Gig Depio, in their Gallery for the last several weeks and he will be here tonight for a reception and short talk about his work. It’s S.cience T.echnology E.ngineering A.rts and M.ath night (better known as STEAM) at Eagle Valley Middle School; go see what these amazing students are up to. Sassafras welcomes Stocksmile to their stage for an evening of grungy folk punk.

Bundle up, Carson City. We aren’t due for any more wet stuff today, but the air will have a bitter chill to it. The monthly lecture at the Nevada State Museum will explore what it took to make Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in Nevada. Sing your heart out with J and M Productions at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar. Jimmy Mallett takes you back to the rat pack days at Living the Good Life. If you’ve had a birthday this month, let Carson Cigar Company help you celebrate.

• Senior Issues at the Nevada State Legislature

Windy, rainy days are excellent for watching movies. Luckily, the International Film Weekend kicks off today with Chinese film, ‘Wolf Totem,’ in the Community Center Theater. Show up at 3 p.m. if you want to be wowed by some independent films from students at the UNR Reynolds School of Journalism.

I just keep telling myself that the spring flowers will be amazing this year, but honestly, I’m growing weary of all this rain. Several of our hiking and bike trails have been affected, the sports fields are a muddy mess, and we are still in danger of more flooding.

After all the wind and snow, I’m absolutely in the mood for an early spring. Let’s just hope that the groundhog can’t find his shadow today. A rainy day is in store for us today, and possibly tomorrow, but don’t let that ruin the fun. Jeffery Pace welcomes you to the Grand Opening of Artsy Fartsy Art Gallery’s new location. Two screenings of ‘Screenagers: Growing Up in the Digital Age’ this evening will be in the Bob Boldrick Theater at the Community Center: it’s free and open to all. Sing your heart out downtown. You’ll find karaoke at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar and the Westside Pour House.

Western Nevada College began its semester earlier this week, and student artists will soon be featured in a CCAI exhibit at the BRIC building on East Proctor. Catch a last glimpse of the current exhibit with Sierra Nevada College talent today or tomorrow. Read on for more ....

As this storm system moves in, it makes it difficult for list-makers, such as myself. I cannot predict which of these events will be affected or cancelled because of the snow. The show must go on for the kids of Youth Theater Carson City. ‘The Lion King, Jr.’ is in its final weekend of performances.

The wintery weather continues, but this next cluster of storms aren’t expected to be as bad as what we’ve already been through. Enjoy some quality time with your little one at the Carson Library: story times are at 10:30 a.m. and at 11:30 a.m.
