The 13th annual Cops and Kids is an all-out community gathering where parents and children can participate in games and activities all designed with family, health and safety in mind. The street party spans two blocks and features refreshments, music, safety demonstrations, games and more. It regularly sees at least a thousand or more children in attendance.

The Carson City Sheriff's Office was handed the baton this Wednesday afternoon in the final leg of the annual Law Enforcement Memorial Run which began April 27 in Las Vegas.

Each leg of the run is completed in the memory of each officer listed on the state law enforcement memorial in Carson City. The final leg is dedicated in memory of Carson City Sheriff's Deputy Carl Howell who died in the line of duty August 15, 2015.

Howell will be honored at the 19th annual Nevada Law Enforcement Officers Memorial ceremony Thursday, noon in Carson City.

Suspected pipe bomb at Tahoe government center prompts Carson City courthouse sweep

10:57AM UPDATE: The "all clear" was given at the El Dorado County Government Center in South Lake Tahoe. The alleged bomb has been considered a hoax device meant to cause the major response by law enforcement that it did, according to South Lake Tahoe Police Chief Brian Uhler. Evidence is being gathered and roads will soon reopen.

Carson City Sheriff: Fireworks and gunfire at Silver Saddle Ranch part of mounted horse training

The mounted unit of the Carson City Sheriff's Office will be working with horses Friday after sunset and into the evening in which fireworks and gunfire will be used as part of the training, said Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong.

The event is to help condition the horses to loud noises. The exercise will be held at Silver Saddle Ranch and should be over by 10 p.m.

Sheriff's Office investigates windows shot out at downtown Carson City antique store

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office is investigating windows that were shot out early Tuesday morning at a downtown Carson City antique store.

The incident happened at just after 1:30 a.m. Tuesday morning at Hanifin’s Arts and Antiques on the Curry Street entrance. The business is located at 210 North Carson Street. Two large plate glass windows were shot out. Dispatch received word of the vandalism at 1:33 a.m.

Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong said the shooting incident is under investigation and did not elaborate further.

Leaders warn of marijuana use dangers, speak out against November ballot question

When it comes to legalizing recreational marijuana use in Nevada, Assemblyman P.K. O’Neill, R-Carson City, is asking voters to just say no.

“I’ve lived in Nevada half of my life,” he said. “This is my state. I do not want a state that takes that slippery slope.”

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office has acquired a new permanent single law enforcement non-emergency telephone number to contact the city-wide dispatch center.

The new number is 887-COPS (887-2677). This telephone number will eventually replace most of the older telephone lines that are currently in use and will eventually result in a cost savings of $50 per month, per telephone line still in use, said Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong.

At approximately 12:45 p.m., the Carson City Sheriff’s Office attempted to serve a warrant on Jose Alberto Garcia-Perez, 24, for Luring a Child to Engage in Sexual Conduct (Felony), Open and Gross Lewdness with a Child (Gross Misdemeanor), and Statutory Sexual Seduction (Felony). The warrant carried with it a bail of $40,000.

Carson City veterans group attracting more stakeholders

Participation in Carson City's local Green Zone Initiative push has more than doubled since the first meeting called together by Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong on Feb. 10.

An altercation at a Carson City gas station Monday in which a man told 911 dispatch that he used pepper spray on a homeless person, ended with the arrest of the 911 caller after deputies found at least 2.5 pounds of marijuana, hashish, and drug paraphernalia on him, said Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong.

UPDATE: Woman in vehicle pedestrian crash on North Carson Street dies

UPDATE: 8:50PM: Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong confirms that the pedestrian who was hit in the intersection of North Carson Street and College Parkway, has died. The identity of the woman has not been released pending notification of family members.

UPDATE: The victim is an older female who was reported to be breathing but unconscious. She was taken by ground ambulance to the Carson City Airport and flown to the trauma ward of Renown Medical Center in Reno.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.

Carson City green zone charter adopted

Members of a community advisory panel met Wednesday to adopt a local charter for the state of Nevada's Green Zone Initiative, a statewide effort to bring veteran service providers and other community stakeholders together in a pooling of resources that would make access easier for the state's veteran population.

The panel approved making Carson City one of 10 community green zone councils across the state, calling its local initiative the Carson City Area Veterans Community Council (CCAVCC).
