The Western Nevada College arts and humanities exhibition Always Lost: A Meditation on War returns to the Nevada Legislative Building ​April 6-22 ​during the 2015​ Legislative​ session.​ Always Lost will be on display in the second floor atrium​ of the Legislative Building​. A special opening ceremony is planned for Monday, April 6 from 10-10:30 a.m. in Room 1214.

Scheduled to speak at the opening are ​Senate Majority Leader Michael Roberson, Assembly Speaker John Hambrick, Nevada Military and Veterans Policy Director Caleb Cage and Carson City Mayor Robert Crowell.

What began last year with a desire by five local women to bring international films to Carson City will this year be a multi-venue, free three-day event, Thursday through Saturday, Feb. 5-7. Last year’s event was a rousing success, paving the way for this year’s larger festival.

The Carson City Community Center and Western Nevada College will be venues for viewing three foreign feature-length films, three independently produced films, and several Brewery Arts Center contest-winning short films.

After learning earlier this month that it would receive a National Endowment of the Arts grant, the Capital City Arts Initiative has more good news that came before the end of 2014. It has received a $50,000 grant from The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.
The Foundation awarded the organization the grant for two years of program support through 2016.

National Endowment for the Arts Chairman Jane Chu announced Tuesday that the Capital City Arts Initiative is one of 919 nonprofit organizations nationwide to receive an NEA Art Works grant.

CCAI is recommended for a $10,000 grant to support an exhibition by artist Katie Lewis in the CCAI Courthouse Gallery. Ms. Lewis’ show will open in September 2015.

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval officially honored “Always Lost: A Meditation on War,” Tuesday in a Veterans Day proclamation. The humanities exhibit, touring nationally, was created by Western Nevada College faculty and students in Carson City.

The proclamation notes 2014 is the “Year of the Veteran” in Nevada as it entered the Union during the Civil War and henceforth is called “Battle Born.”

Western Nevada College student veterans Aaron Endel (Active Army, Operation Iraqi Freedom) and Blaine Inman (Active Army, Operation Enduring Freedom) carry a banner for the nationally touring arts and humanities exhibition "Always Lost: A Meditation on War" which features the faces and names of U.S. military war dead in Iraq and Afghanistan since Sept. 11, 2001. The Capital City Arts Initiative announces its exhibition, BRIC Art 5, with artwork by eight area artists at the City’s Business Resource Innovation Center [BRIC]. CCAI will host a reception for the artists on Friday, October 17, from 5 - 7pm. The BRIC is located at 108 E Proctor Street, Carson City. The exhibition and reception are free and the public is cordially invited. The exhibition will remain at the BRIC through September 4, 2015. The Carson City Symphony, directed by David Bugli, will open its 31st season Sunday, Oct. 26 with "A Nevada 150 Concert" at the Carson City Community Center's Bob Boldrick Theater.

The concert includes the Carson City Symphony Chorus directed by Michael Langham, and featured guest artists McAvoy Layne as Mark Twain, poet Shaun Griffin, Native American singer Christina Thomas, and readers Rita Geil and Christina Van Geel. The program begins at 4 p.m.

Carson City Library and Nevada Humanities Scholar Patricia Cooper-Smith will host a book discussion on the 2014 Nevada Reads selected book by Sarah E. Olds (1875-1963), titled “Twenty Miles From A Match: Homesteading in Western Nevada”, on Tuesday, Oct. 14, at 6 p.m. at the BRIC (Business Resource Innovation Center) located at 108 E Proctor Street in downtown Carson City.

Carson City government officials on Thursday recognized Western Nevada College’s nationally known humanities exhibition on the costs of war, “Always Lost: A Meditation on War,” Thursday with a proclamation of appreciation and honor.

Carson City Mayor Robert Crowell, a Vietnam veteran, has called the exhibit “our community’s gift to the nation.”

A proclamation honoring the creators and contributors of “Always Lost” was presented to Western Nevada College President Chester Burton and Professors Emeritus Don Carlson and Marilee Swirczek during the Board of Supervisors meeting.

The Carson City Board of Supervisors will pay tribute to the creators of the acclaimed Western Nevada College exhibit “Always Lost, a Meditation on War” when it meets Thursday, Oct. 2.

“Always Lost, A Meditation on War,” the nationally touring humanities exhibition created by WNC students and faculty, opened Monday at the historic Minden Inn, 1594 Esmeralda Ave., and remains through Friday, Sept. 12.

Words become pictures, framed art in their own right, as poetry and prose by beloved local writers are exhibited at the Nevada Arts Council’s OXS Gallery in Carson City. In “Words + Images: Broadsides from the Black Rock Press,” 34 one-sided printed pages show the work of noted authors, produced with handset type and relief plates. The exhibit runs Sept. 8 to Oct. 31.

Beatles Flashback, a Beatles tribute band formed in 2006, will be on stage tonight, Wednesday, at the Carson City Community Center as part of the Jazz & Beyond Carson City Music Festival.

While most people are familiar with Beatles tribute bands that dress up to look like the Fab Four, Beatles Flashback, a group that formed in Sonoma County, Calif., and is now based in Reno, focuses instead on recreating the music that is heard on the original recordings.

The Jazz and Beyond: Carson City Music Festival presents Boogie Woogie Hall of Famer Carl Sonny Leyland in concert on Thursday, Aug. 7, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall, 511 W. King St., Carson City.

"Jazz & Beyond" is a yearly festival put on by the Mile High Jazz Band Association and its sponsors. Admission to this concert is free. Donations are requested and include a chance at a door prize.

Douglas County is hosting the Western Nevada College “Always Lost: A Meditation on War” arts and humanities exhibition as part of a special Nevada Sesquicentennial tour sponsored by the Nevada Department of Veterans Services (NDVS). The exhibit will be on display at the Minden Inn August 25-September 12, 2014 and is free and open to the public. This year, the United States celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Beatles' first visit to these shores. The "Jazz & Beyond: Carson City Music Festival" is excited to provide two exciting Beatles events in honor of that occasion.

Tom May and Chris Kennedy are scheduled to perform in Carson City, NV at The Brewery Arts Center performance hall, 511 West King St., Friday, July 25 at 7:30P p.m.

Tom May is a folksinger, songwriter and author who has been touring, performing, and recording for over forty years. He is also the host/producer of the radio show, “River City Folk,” heard on dozens of radio stations weekly since 1985 and on XM Satellite Radio throughout the country.

The Folklife Program of the Nevada Arts Council has named Las Vegas residents Gary and Sheldeen Haleamau as recipients of the 2015 Nevada Heritage Award. The Haleamaus are recognized for preserving, perpetuating and presenting their native Hawaiian culture throughout Nevada.

In honor of Armed Forces Day, the Capital City Arts Initiative invites you to attend a reading by Iraq veteran and writer Caleb Cage at the BRIC, 108 E Proctor Street, Carson City.

The reading will take place Saturday, May 17 at 5pm. The free event is part of CCAI’s Books & Writers series co-sponsored with the Carson City Library. CCAI and the Library enthusiastically invite everyone to attend the reading.
