Senator Square: Author and Carson High School graduate Teri Case visits her alma mater

The Carson High School Library was packed with students Nov. 1 for a special occasion guest speaker, author and CHS graduate Teri Case. She gave students who attend College Connections some practical and realistic advice on writing applications for both local and national scholarships.

Carson High School students to volunteer at the polls Tuesday

CARSON CITY — More than two dozen Carson High School students from Mrs. Jennifer Chandler’s AP Government and Mrs. Angila Golik’s Honors Government classes will be working in coordination with Aubrey Rowlatt, Carson City County chief deputy, next Tuesday, Nov. 6, for Election Day.

Governor Sandoval to serve as grand marshal of Nevada Day parade

Gov. Brian Sandoval will lead this year’s Nevada Day parade as the grand marshal. “I’m overwhelmed, and I’m honored,” Sandoval said during an interview in his office. “Nevada Day is an important day to me. I love this state and appreciate this state. It’s given me everything I have.”

Latino Outreach and the Associated Students of Western Nevada will present the third annual El Dia De Los Muertos (The Day of the Dead) celebration from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1 in the Art Gallery in the Bristlecone Building on Western Nevada College’s Carson City campus.

10th Carson City Celebrity Chef and Harvest Dinner for The Greenhouse Project set for Nov. 12

Senator Square: Carson High School teacher raises money for breast cancer awareness

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and this time every year touches the heart of one of the teachers at CHS: Art teacher Mike Malley, whose mother is a breast cancer survivor, due to early detection, has decided to take breast cancer awareness to a new level by putting on a fundraising event Oct. 18 at the Trimmer Barn from 5 to 8 p.m.

Welcome All Veterans Everywhere Inc. (WAVE) is eager to have the public attend the dedication ceremony for the new Veterans Appreciation Monument Oct 6 at noon. National Honor Society President Eleanor Sturm made her opening remarks at the annual NHS induction ceremony Sept. 17 in the CHS Big Gym. Guest Speaker, Greater Nevada Credit Union Vice President Jenny Casselman then addressed the new NHS members and discussed what it means to be a part of such a fantastic organization and the responsibilities of being an NHS member.

A tradition that began decades ago at CHS has seniors jumping out of bed still wearing their pajamas, grabbing their blankets, and heading off to the CHS football field to arrive by 6 a.m.

Memorial on C Hill for Carson City man, Army soldier who died in June motorcycle crash

According to friends, a memorial letter "K" went up late last week and remains Monday on C-Hill in memory of Curtis Ryan Kiernan, who died June 29 in a motorcycle crash in Sparks.

Chili competitors at Carson City cook-off raise their game to benefit veterans

Mother Nature brought the heat Saturday to open the annual High Sierra and Nevada Capitol Regional Chili Cook Off held at Glen Eagles Restaurant in Carson City.

But chili flavors stole the show, which raises money to send veterans back East to Washington, D.C., on an all-expenses-paid trip that also pays tribute to their military service.
