Mike Kunz and Stephen Hipp, co-chairmen of the Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce Veterans Dinner and members of the chamber board of directors, announced today that former United States Senator Dean Heller will be the featured speaker at the Chamber's third annual Veterans Dinner.

Only one week left to submit nominations for the 2019 Mayor's Arts Awards. The award recognizes individuals and organizations committed to elevating arts excellence within our state capital. Nominees must be residents of Carson City, work in Carson City, or demonstrate their contribution to the arts in Carson City.

Hello from CHS in Carson City. I want to share this information with you so that you may be able to come and support our many students participating in Fall Sports. The list below has upcoming events for each sport in which our new Athletic Leadership Council is going to push out to their teams and friends to come support one another. In the spirit of unity, we want to reach out to both the staff and community to invite all of you to do the same.

National Honor Society held its induction ceremony Sept. 23 in the CHS Big Gym featuring guest speaker Ryan Costella a 2000 CHS graduate. Costella was an active member of NHS, and this fact influenced his desire to attend college at Villanova University in Philadelphia, PA where he earned degrees in Political Science and English.

Nevada State Librarian Tod Colegrove will take over as director of the Carson City Library next week. “The Carson City Library is leading the nation in many ways,” he said. “I’m not prone to hyperbole, but that is the reality of the situation.”

Homecoming, first seen in 1911 at the University of Missouri, is a wonderful event celebrated throughout the US at high schools and colleges. Homecoming is more than just a football game, it encompasses multiple celebratory events such as bonfires, tailgate parties, dances, and the crowning of a King and Queen. Fall is in the air in Carson City, and a change in the weather was one more reason for kids and adults alike to get out and celebrate this year’s Disney themed Happiest Homecoming on Earth.

Friday Sept. 13, no bad luck on this day, beginning at 1:18 p.m. was an assembly in the Big Gym during the last class of the day as an introduction to CHS’ Happiest Homecoming on Earth. Leadership students led the assembly with the first activity being the introduction of the Homecoming King and Queen candidates who made their grand entrance onto the floor.

Carson High School will again open its doors a little wider and longer for the 3rd Annual Back-to-School Night like no other Sept. 9. Open House, Open Hearts is a community event focused on building bridges to local services for teens and their families, increasing parent and guardian engagement at CHS, and celebrating the community, creativity, and diverse talents of Carson City.

Their shared ancestry to the rich equestrian tradition found in the United Kingdom offers natural synergy to the horsemanship tradition they have in common, but that’s where the trail and spoils split for Kailey Fitzpatrick and Riley McHenry.

Watching them gather, wearing pajamas, wrapped in blankets, and celebrating the beginning of their senior year, the Class of 2019-2020 gathered together at 6:00 a.m. Aug. 30 on the bleachers of the Carson High School football field to watch the sun rise; it is the beginning of their last year at CHS, and, for some of them, their last year as students who were raised within the Carson City School District, students who went from kindergarten at Mark Twain Elementary to Carson Middle School and have spent the last three years at CHS.

Carson High School Principal Gavin Ward stood at the north entrance high-fiving students as they entered high school, some of them for the first time. In fact, counselors, teachers, and other administrators stood at each of the school entrances welcoming students to the best high school in the state, hyperbole aside.

The National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges awarded Katherine R. Malzahn-Bass, Court Improvement Program Coordinator for the Supreme Court of Nevada, the 2019 Innovator of the Year award for her efforts on Nevada’s Statewide Juvenile Dependency Mediation Program.

While Carson City employment figures show a decrease of roughly 100 jobs in July, the capital city is up more than 1,000 jobs over the year, according to the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation’s monthly economic report released Tuesday.

CARSON CITY — Business may be Greek to many college freshmen, but it’s the heart language of Avery Casteel. Casteel, a 2018 graduate from Sierra Lutheran High School and a rising sophomore at Concordia University, Irvine used her first year in college to quickly grab ahold of the fast-climbing elevator to the executive suite for college students studying business.

Nominations are being accepted for the 2019 Pioneer Awards through the Northern Nevada Development Authority with the deadline to make nominations closing on Wednesday, July 31 at 11:59 p.m.

CARSON CITY — Northern Nevada Development Authority announced Tuesday that Jim Peckham, Executive Director of Friends in Service Helping since 2009, has been named as the 2019 Pioneer of the Year. NNDA’s Pioneer of the Year award honors an individual who both personally and professionally supports and has had a significant impact on the economic development and growth of the region.

TOCCATA-Tahoe Symphony Orchestra and Chorus opens its concert series at the elegant Genoa Lakes Golf Club Ballroom at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 31st with a special program.

Brenda Spring, with RE/MAX Realty Affiliates Carson City, has received the RE/MAX Hall of Fame Award, which honors successful agents who have earned more than $1 million in commissions during their careers with the company. Only 22 percent of all active RE/MAX agents have earned this prestigious award since its inception.

CARSON CITY — At the close of the school year, the Carson High School NJROTC program was pleased to announce they earned a Distinguished Unit award with Academic Honors. This was the second year in a row the unit has received the recognition.

With some help from the Ghost of Mark Twain, Carson City Chamber of Commerce celebrated its accomplishments for the year at their annual meeting Thursday evening at The Martin Hotel Restaurant.

Each June, the Carson City Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors recognizes quality of life, community and economic growth achievements.

At the Chamber annual meeting on June 13, Chamber Chairman of the Board Robert Fredlund will honor seven individuals or businesses that personify what Mayor Robert Crowell is so often proud to state, “Carson City is a great place to live, work, and play.”

Hello fellow anglers. The official start of summer is only two weeks away and the weather has started to cooperate. Many of the passes are opening and the higher lakes are thawing out. Winter seems to get longer and longer each year. So enjoy the next two weeks of spring, because I have a feeling its going to be a hot year. Fishing has started to pick up all over the area, and with the school year ending for most kids, we are now in full camping mode. There are still some areas that are closed, due to the excessive winter we just had. I will try to keep you updated as the season progresses.

On behalf of the PHS and Carson Online staff, we are extending a collective thank you to families, K-12 staff and administrators, and members of our community. You have each played an important part in helping our students achieve such an important milestone in their lives.

Pioneer High School held a graduation ceremony Tuesday evening at the Carson City Community Center to commemorate the achievements of 56 students who completed their high school coursework.

Between the 56 students, they secured nearly $125,000 in awards and scholarships to assist with continuing education, which is a new record for the high school.

Carson High School students not only experienced exciting college, job, and career opportunities outside of school this past week, they were also presented with an explosion of options directly.

Chamber Orchestra Students returned from their successful regional music festival in San Francisco, several CHS students enjoyed job shadowing with Nevada Legislators, and May 21 offered students access to its job and career fair throughout the day.

The Carson City Elks Lodge #2177 honored fallen veterans for Memorial Day by commemorating early Friday afternoon.

Lodge members gathered together and placed flags at Lone Mountain Cemetery in Carson City to honor our community’s veterans.

Pre-selected military veterans and seniors will enjoy the thrill of a Dream Flight in a 1944 Stearman biplane, the same aircraft used to train military aviators during World War II. The flights are courtesy of Ageless Aviation Dreams Foundation (AADF), a Carson City-based nonprofit that honors U.S. military veterans nationwide with free Dream Flights. AADF has given more than 3,700 Dream Flights nationwide since 2011.
