Salvador Dali, the Spanish artist known for his surrealist works, was a bike rider, too; happy birthday to him. An artist reception this evening at the Nevada Arts Council honors Pasha Rafat. Her sculpture exhibit titled ‘New Work’ is on display through July 10.

Senator Square: Speech and debate, future business leader teams prepare for nationals

CHS Speech and Debate will be holding several fundraisers to help cover the cost of the National Tournament this June in Dallas.
Cracker Box diner celebrates 35th year with accolades from governor, congressman and city

To mark the occasion Carson City Mayor Robert Crowell and the Board of Supervisors joined a representative from Congressman Mark Amodei's office to recognize the restaurant Friday morning with certificates and congratulations.
Seventh grader Kyle Navarro of Carson City Named AAA Nevada Patroller of the Year

Kyle has exhibited sound safety skills by making sure students get in and out of cars safely around the school drop off and pick up zone, said Haldon Johnson, AAA Business Manager.

Senator Square: Tuesday is ACT test for juniors; Cinderella Ball a huge smash

Freshmen, sophomores and seniors get the day off. However, proficiencies will also be given that day to some seniors.

The week that they return from break will be extremely busy for leadership students, as they will be decorating for three major events to be held April 16, 17, and 18.
Senator Square: Mural contest winner paints 'Road to Success'

All entries were judged and the 1st place winner was Athena Favero, who received a $200 Amazon Gift Card. Second place and a $100 Amazon Gift Card went to Michael Rose. As part of the contest, Athena painted her winning design "A Senator’s Road To Success” on the hallway wall outside the GNCU branch at CHS. Students and staff are encouraged to come by and see her winning mural at Carson High School. Congratulations to our winners, and thanks to all the students who entered.
Maestro of the classical guitar George Sakellariou live April 2 at the BAC

George Sakellariou began playing the guitar at an early age in Athens, Greece, and received formal training at the esteemed Conservatory of Music in Athens.

State History Day results: The Northern Nevada National History Day contest was held on March 14 at the University of Nevada, Reno and Carson High School sophomores produced fantastic results. All first place entries qualify to move on to the national contest.
'Pipe Makers of the Great Basin' video shows 100-year-old’s American Indian craft

In a quietly reflective video, Tobey shows an apprentice how his pieces take shape and inspiration for use in traditional ceremonies. A Nevada Arts Council grant helped create “Pipe Makers of the Great Basin.” The film premiered in February and is now online at nac.nevadaculture.org under Nevada Stories.

WNC Baseball: Wildcats reach 400-win milestone

Whittemore and his Western Nevada College baseball program hit another milestone Thursday when the Wildcats secured the team's 400th all-time victory by dispatching Colorado Northwestern Community College, 9-6. Now in his 10th season, Whittemore has guided the Wildcats to an average of nearly 44 wins per season.
"To be able to share it with (assistant) Aaron Demosthenes, who is a great friend of mine, tremendously loyal and very talented coach, for him to be here for all 400 wins is really special," Whittemore said.

The quaint-yet-majestic cabin, listed by Chase International’s Karen Bruno, received the most online votes in the Celebrity Homes category. The month-long contest on HGTV’s FrontDoor.com attracted nearly 50 million views.

Senator Square: Proficiency testing this week at Carson High School

Students taking the proficiency tests will begin their school day at the regular time of 7:45 a.m., while those not taking the proficiencies will start their school day at 10:30 a.m. The following tests will be given on the assigned days — March 2: Math; March 3: Reading; March 4: Writing; and March 5: Science. Former WNC pitcher Rayne Raven earns national, Big West honors for NCAA Division I debut

Former Western Nevada College pitcher Rayne Raven hurled seven shutout innings and fanned 16 hitters in his first outing for Cal State University, Northridge in a 6-0 victory over Utah Valley on Saturday.
Two days after the overpowering performance, the junior right-hander was among Collegiate Baseball Newspaper's National Players of the Week and was the first pitcher of the week for the Big West Conference for the 2015 season.
Senator Square: CHS Leadership puts 'Love Thy Community' theme to work
Submitted by editor on Sun, 02/15/2015 - 6:34amHey Carson City, the Carson High Leadership class is organizing a clean-up day at Mills Park for Thursday, Feb. 26 from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. This month, Carson High Leadership is focusing on Love Thy Community.
So every week, Carson High's Student Council will be encouraging their fellow students to clean up in several different ways: they will be making posters and flyers and putting them up around the school, it will be on the announcements, and every Thursday of Friday they will be passing out a reward when they see other students cleaning up.
Klondike Derby: Scouts test their outdoor skills at Lake Tahoe
Submitted by editor on Wed, 02/11/2015 - 6:38pmMore than 130 Scouts and adult leaders participated in the 2015 Pinenut District Klondike Derby at Sugar Pine Point State Park at South Lake Tahoe on January 23-24.
The weather was beautiful, chilly and not enough snow. Scouts completed in events that tested their outdoor skills. This included shelter building, fire building, knot tying, First Aid, signaling and even entertainment. Each Scout patrol brought its sled containing essential equipment needed for the competition.

It’s a chance for alumni to come back and visit the old stomping grounds, support the Senators and a chance for us to celebrate contributions and the lives of CHS alumni. The Alumni games will be held February 13 against Douglas Tigers.
Midnight deadline tonight to register for BAC's St. Patrick's-themed filmmaking competition
Submitted by editor on Sat, 02/07/2015 - 8:19pmThe Brewery Arts Center, Carson TV and Wired Wednesday Digital Arts Club announce a new film competition, the first "St. Paddy's Film Crawl: A Short Filmmaking Competition" with screening and judging March 14. Registration deadline has been extended to midnight, Wednesday, March 4.
Films cannot be less than 1 minute or more than 10 minutes in length. They must utilize one fact about St. Patrick's Day and can be Documentary or Mockumentary in nature.
SENarts series back with artists exhibits, talks and demonstrations at Nevada Legislature

Designed to create an opportunity for artists to engage with community members and people working in or visiting the Nevada State Legislative Building, the presentations are at 3:30 p.m. Feb. 18 and 24, March 19 and 30, April 17 and May 7. USAF Band of Washington, D.C. to perform in Carson City

Mayor Robert Crowell, representing the City of Carson City, and the Carson City Chamber of Commerce is collaborating to bring the United States Air Force Band of Washington D.C. to the Bob Boldrick Theater at the Community Center for a free concert on Wednesday evening March 4 at 7 p.m.

The theme of Winterfest is WinterFlix, like Netflix. Congratulations to the Winterfest Candidates who have been nominated by their classmates. One prince and princess will be chosen by a class vote for the freshmen, sophomores and juniors. One king and queen will be chosen among the senior class. Royalty court will be announced Thursday.
