Health officials outline conditions for safe and secure return of Nevada cruise ship passengers

On Sunday, March 8, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) contacted states, including Nevada, with notification that 21 passengers aboard the Grand Princess cruise ship tested positive for novel coronavirus (COVID-19). This ship had been floating off the California coast since Thursday when those 21 passengers tested positive. We have received confirmation from federal authorities that the 49 passengers from Nevada are asymptomatic.

A Carson City couple, Robert and Pamela Corkill, stuck on a Grand Princess Cruise ship docked in Oakland, Calif., and quarantined because of the coronavirus among some of the passengers, were surprised to learn Monday evening that state and local health officials are coordinating their return, along with other residents from the capital city, Douglas and Lyon counties.

UPDATE 6:14PM: The following is from the Nevada Department of Public Health: Carson City Health and Human Services prematurely issued a press release regarding Nevada passengers on the Grand Princess cruise ship which has been under quarantine due to COVID-19.

The State of Nevada is coordinating with all local health districts to ensure that Nevadans on the ship who may need medical monitoring and services get the care they require, in addition to ensuring any plan has safeguards in place to protect our communities.

Nearly 22,000 homebuyers since 2014 get help through Nevada Housing Division program

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Housing Division’s Home Is Possible programs have helped 21,970 homebuyers realize the dream of homeownership in Nevada since the program launched in September 2014 through calendar year 2019. This number includes 1,497 veterans and active military personnel served by the HIP for Heroes program and 796 Nevada teachers through the HIP for Teachers program.

Lyon County Commissioners approve new Dayton subdivision, reject mobile home workforce housing park

A new subdivision of 96 single family homes was approved by Lyon County Commissioners early this month, which will be built near the Sutro Heights subdivision in Dayton. A proposed Silver Springs mobile home park, which would provide workforce rental housing, was denied.

Carson Mall, 1223 South Carson Street, in Carson City will host a series of Valentine events, Feb. 12-16, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The mall will feature vendors, free Valentine Photos by Magical Moments, and chocolate dipped strawberries.

From Feb. 12 through Feb. 14, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., visit inside the mall and make a Valentine for a loved one. Then, make another Valentine for a Senior that will be delivered to local retirement homes.

On Feb. 15 Carson Mall will host Family Bingo Night. Proceeds will benefit Carson High School’s Safe and Sober Grad Night.

Carson City sheriff's investigators, SWAT search and sweep homes, teen suspects in custody

UPDATE: Four juveniles are in custody in connection to a shooting that happened Saturday night in Carson City in which two adult males suffered gunshot wounds. Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong said Sunday afternoon in a news releases that four juveniles have been taken into custody in relation to a shooting. Of the juveniles, ages 13-16 years, two were from Carson City and one from Douglas County. Go here for the latest update regarding the arrests.

During the annual “State of the City” address Friday at Gold Dust West, Carson City’s Mayor Bob Crowell gave his last speech of its kind, as he is retiring at the end of this year.

The State of the City address is a way community members can be kept up to date on everything going on in our capital city, including achievements, challenges, and everything in between.
