At least 24 million people in the U.S. struggle with addiction to alcohol and other drugs. The good news is that millions in recovery stand as evidence that there is hope – people can stop using, reconnect with family, and go on to productive, happy lives. The Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey is one group promoting the fact that recovery is possible, prevention works and treatment is effective.

Ellie Barstad completed the quilt just in time for the holidays, and is offering raffle tickets for a chance to win it. The proceeds of the raffle will go to the Dayton Food Pantry.

With the big distribution day for the holidays on Thursday, Dec. 16, the Dayton Food Pantry will operate that day only from the Dayton Community Center at 170 Pike Street from noon to 5 p.m.

With unemployment in Lyon County at nearly 20 percent, donations are especially welcome this holiday season, explained Freida Carbery, director for the Pantry.

On the other days of December, the Food Pantry will be open for emergency food needs as usual, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 4 Enterprise Way and Highway 50 (east of Smith’s Grocery) Monday through Friday.

The Mile High Jazz Band and vocalist Sheryl Adams will be joined by Rita Geil and other award-winning poets for an evening of big-band jazz and poetry reading at Comma Coffee, 312 S. Carson St., 8:00 to 10:00 p.m. The theme of the evening, "Stocking Up," relates to the holidays and to life. Admission: $5 at the door/FREE age 18 and under. Celtic Lawn and Landscape recently showed its holiday goodwill by giving back to the town of Dayton, Nev. When the owner and employees of Celtic heard that the Dayton Toy Drive had already received 60 applications from families in need of gifts for their children, they came up with a creative way to help.

New hours for the Carson City Animal Shelter will go into effect on Monday, Dec. 7, health officials said.

The change reflects cost-cutting measures by one day from the current schedule. The shelter is now closed on Sundays, Mondays and holidays.

DAYTON, NV – Pack 100 of Dayton Nevada collected several hundred pounds of food for the Dayton Food Pantry during their annual Scouting for Food event this week.

The boys of Pack 100 spent two weeks canvassing the Dayton and Mark Twain neighborhoods door to door seeking donations.

Yep, I got to the Carson Community Center a 7:30 p.m. Friday night, ready to enjoy the Western Nevada musical "White Christmas." Big show, big cast, great music.

But the audience didn't show up. No one but me, except for Stephanie Arrigotti, producer and director and her cast of thousands.I then realized the the WNMCC opens its shows on Saturdays rather then Fridays.

So what, I was there, the orchestra was warming up, the actors were on stage, the house lights were dimmed and there were plenty of seats, so I sat to enjoy a private preview, the dress rehearsal.

Wendy Madson of Healthy Communities Coalition will facilitate an open meeting on Monday Nov. 1 at 6 p.m. at the Dayton Community Center at 170 Pike Street for any groups that are or would like to be involved in any community assistance for Dayton during the holidays (gifts, coats, hats, mittens, etc.)
