CARSON CITY — Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada and Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) is launching a free “Make New Friends” virtual event series to ensure that all girls are prepared to start kindergarten with confidence.

Staying connected to students, virtually, is the biggest challenge every educator is facing right now. Teachers, paraprofessionals, school counselors, administrators, school secretaries, custodians, and everyone for that matter is missing the energy and life students bring to our worlds.

Partnership Carson City is teaming up with Carson High School, presenting a free family engagement webinar series to help promote health and wellness for youth and adults alike.

During this pandemic, I would love to think I am in fact a builder because I strive to see the best in this, because I have been helping those struggling immensely during these hard times, and because I am doing my best to help the medical professionals I know.

February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month. According to loveisrespect.org, nearly 1.5 million high school students nationwide experience physical abuse from a dating partner in a single year.

It is critically important that we speak to our kids about what healthy relationships look like and what to do if they turn abusive.

With sunny skies and daytime highs in the 50s, Tuesday is shaping up to be a great day around the capital city. Muscle Powered will host morning and evening walks, plus there's an assortment of meetings, club gatherings, art showings, a local school board meeting and more. At the end of the day, there's no better way to cap off the evening than by celebrating, with your sweetheart, music about love. That will be what's happening at Living the Good Life as Mile High Jazz Band and our celebrated vocalist Jakki Ford will do just that presenting "Jazz Sampler for Sweethearts." Read on for details.

I was scrolling around on Facebook today and ran into a post. “Once you are in a relationship, you think it’s going to last forever. In reality, it only lasts as long as you are both working for it. If one of you stops working, it falls apart.” Lots of comments in agreement were posted. There were lots of likes and loves. My viewpoint is slightly different.

The American Citizen Essay winners are in, and they all have one thing in common: cash prizes. This year, the Carson City School District Board of Trustees selected the topic, “An early motto of the United States was e pluribus unum, which means ‘out of many, one,’ so how do we embrace diversity and inclusiveness to come together as one country?”

Seeking Safety is an evidence-based, present-focused counseling model to help people attain safety from trauma and/or substance abuse. It focuses on coping skills to help you become more safe in your relationships, thinking and actions.

DAYTON, Nev. — Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties’ monthly public breakfast meeting takes place on Thursday Feb. 14, 2019 at 9am at the Dayton Community Center at 170 Pike Street, Dayton.

Guest speakers from Safe Embrace and also from JOIN, Inc will give presentations this month.

Healthy Communities Coalition’s January breakfast meeting includes a discussion and request for input on the Coalition’s updated Comprehensive Community Prevention Plan.

The public meeting is on Thursday, Jan. 10, 9 a.m. at the Silver Springs Community Center, 2945 Fort Churchill Street in the Lahontan Room, on the left side of the building that also houses the Senior Center.

The December Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties meeting is Thursday, December 13th at 9am at the Silver Springs Community Center. The public meeting includes a festive holiday brunch with dishes made with locally sourced ingredients.

The public is invited to attend the next Foster Parent Information Night Panel in Carson City scheduled for Tuesday, May 15 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Carson City Library, 900 North Roop Street.

Carson City isn't particularly known for its night or dance clubs. But one local non-profit group caters to the needs of some residents who like to cut a rug or bust a groove for a good time.

If you need help and don't know where to turn, Carson City Health and Human Services (CCHHS) probably has the answer.

Besides offering a host of services — from medical to housing and employment — CCHHS also acts as a referral source to community services as well as a hub where service providers and clients connect.

Love her or hate her, Rupaul has some wise words when it comes to loving yourself. “If you don’t love yourself, how the hell are you going to love someone else?” The wisest example I have found on loving myself came from a set of airplane instructions. “Put your own oxygen mask on first before you attempt to help someone with theirs.”

This week's Women to Women Nevada guests are Sally Zola and Brenda Silis. Both are involved in the Capital City Circles Initiative in Carson City.

This community effort is maintained to help elevate people out of poverty by creating healthy relationships that cross economic and social barriers to help establish self-reliance.

Nevada Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto observes National Crime Victim’s Rights Week, which began April 6th, reminds Nevadans of their rights, and promotes the Victim Information Notification Everyday (VINE) program.

The Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield Foundation announced that the Boys & Girls Clubs of Las Vegas (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Elko Boys & Girls Club (Elko, Nev.) will both receive a $10,000 start-up grant to implement Triple Play programming. Additionally, Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows (Reno, Nev.) and Boys & Girls Club of Western Nevada (Carson, Nev.) will receive $5,000 Triple Play Healthy Habits grants to provide programming focused on teaching the importance of healthy eating habits and being physically active.
