Normally, I would just have the complete listing of everything Saturday has to offer in my weekend event summary, but Parade Day offers a few challenges. Namely, there is just so much going on in downtown Carson City that creating a separate listing seems easiest for all of my readers. Whether it’s the bloody marys, the beard contest, or running into long-lost friends that gets you there, it's going to be a beautiful, sunny day.

The Battle Born state celebrates its admission to the United States on the last Friday of October, with the annual Nevada Day parade on Saturday. New this year is a ‘Passport to Downtown’ event on Friday. Also new this year is the one-night-only curated art show, Capital Collage, on Friday night featuring over 20 diverse artists and organizations.

Come view the old-world contest of strength, skill, and Sierra White Granite grit; free for spectators.
Contestants used 4 1/2 pound hammers and as many as 11 bits of graduated steel to drill a 3/4 inch hole in a 4,320 pound piece of Sierra White Granite.
Carson City man jailed after allegedly threatening motel clerk with hammers
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Mon, 06/09/2014 - 10:31amA 39-year-old man faces felony charges, including assault with a deadly weapon, after he allegedly swung two hammers at a motel clerk Saturday night in Carson City.
Ryan Schroeder of Carson City also faces felony charges of burglary and probation violation. He's being held without bail on the probation violation charge and $40,000 on the other two charges. He was arrested at 10:59 p.m. at Carson and Ninth streets, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office deputy.

The three-hour four mile-long parade features hundreds of colorful floats, high-stepping equestrian units, and spirited marching bands from throughout the state. The traditional 10 a.m. flyover of military aircraft from the Fallon Naval Air Station and Nevada Air Guard will kick-off the parade.

Romney, speaking to the same group that Obama addressed on Monday, spent his 27-minute talk focusing on his foreign policy views and the need to maintain a strong military presence.
Crime Log: Carson City woman arrested after driving and using cell phone

- Lindsay Ann Hammers, 23, a fast food employee from Carson City, for a probation and parole violation. Hammers was also arrested on allegations of misdemeanor cell phone use while driving and a misdemeanor failure to appear warrant in her name. No bail has been set.
- Cheryl Bettencourt, 53, a Carson City resident, for burglary and a misdemeanor petit larceny allegation. Bail is set at $25,250 plus administrative fees.

Rural Lawmakers Could Pay High Price For Backing Governor On Budget

CARSON CITY – Nevada’s rural Republican legislators are struggling to defend the governor’s budget that cuts their communities.
Democrats have been showcasing cuts to the rural counties in order to convince rural Republican legislators that a vote for tax increases is a vote to mitigate the harm to their districts.
Senate Majority Leader Steven Horsford, D-Las Vegas, said that rural counties are already “cut to the bone,” and in many cases could lose all that they have left.
