Sierra Silverstrings is a local group of bluegrass musicians, who just happen to be youngsters. But don’t let their age fool you, they will sing, dance, and fiddle their way into your hearts!

This very talented family bluegrass band has performed all over Nevada and California and are adept on the guitar, fiddle, mandolin, and cello.

Rowan Brothers return to Carson City Sept. 24, on the Veranda at Cafe at Adele’s in what is becoming something of an annual tradition. The music starts at 6 p.m.

Each year about this time, Lorin Rowan and Chris Rowan bring patrons an evening of music that includes both new and old original songs and an array of everything from rock and pop to Americana and bluegrass.
Well versed in many genres and presented accoustically with beautiful harmonies, an evening with The Rowans is always a delight.

“This is something we always look forward to,” Lorin said.

Many of us will never forget where we were when we first heard about the hijacking and subsequent attacks on the World Trade Center. September 11, 2001 is burned into our collective memory. At 8:30 a.m. this morning there will be a memorial service at the 9/11 Memorial in Mills Park where an I-beam from the fallen towers now serves as a reminder. Even if you cannot make it to the ceremony, please take a moment of silence to remember.

After spending his 64th birthday with his closest family, and fulfilling his wish to live to 64 years of age and force his family to sing, “When I'm 64,” to him, Ron Gonzales, known to most as Gonzo, died at 2:33 a.m. August 14, after suffering from COPD for decades. He spent his last week pleasantly, able to read for the first time in several years after suffering deteriorating eyesight – he'd received a Kindle for his birthday. His last day was spent with his granddaughter and wife, having fun with those he loved.

The Jazz & Beyond - Carson City Music Festival concludes with nine events on Saturday, August 22, and four events on Sunday August 23.

Music in the Market – Barbara Baxter - 8:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. at Third & Curry St. Farmer's Market. Barbara Baxter sings soul-laced jazz with Jimmy Vermilion on piano.

Jazz & Beyond, Carson City Music Festival, continues on today, Friday, with three free events. The main, special event is the Count Basie 111th Birthday Bash, 8 to 10 p.m., on the Third Street Stage between Carson and Curry Streets in Carson City.

The Music Festival began in 2004 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of William "Count" Basie, Aug. 21, 1904-April 26, 1984.

Ben Crocker has the music of between 250 and 300 arrangements stored on compact discs, which he uses in place of a band while he plays his guitar and sings. But when it came time to organize those songs into some kind of working order, he wasn’t sure where to start.

What a great day in Carson City! Jazz and Beyond continues with Stereo Galaxy at Third and Carson, an outdoor concert at the new Brewery Art Center Minnesota Street Stage, and a special event at the Governor’s Mansion with the Horse Crazy Cowboy Band. Unleash your inner artist at Comma Coffee’s ‘Paint, Drink, and Be Merry’ or at the Senior Center with a special watercolor painting fundraiser. I love August in Carson City and it’s because of Jazz and Beyond. Music everywhere. The Tahoe Ridge Winery is hosting Jazz Van Gogh, a guitar and flute duo. You’ll enjoy some time in the evening sun at the Comma Coffee Courtyard with Brent Johnson and The Call Up listening to some bluesy roots rock. You won’t want to miss Carl Sonny Leland at the Performance Hall of the Brewery Arts Center. The boogie-woogie hall of famer will show you what fun can be had with a piano. The 2015 Carson City Jazz and Beyond music festival heats up Thursday with multiple performances around town to hit all the right notes and music styles with piano jazz, blues, roots and smooth jazz at three different venues.

After the Friday wind and rain, we are supposed to see some clear skies: but don’t quote me on that. You know how the weather here can be. The Third and Curry Farmers Market vendors are tough, though, so your weekly dose of fresh produce will be waiting for you either way. Don’t miss the autumn plant sale at the Greenhouse Project booth. The Carson City Historical Society hosts their second yard sale of the season at the historic Forman-Roberts House on North Carson Street, so have fun treasure hunting.

SATURDAY: Jazz and Beyond

Karla Huntsman will combine the art of storytelling with her talent as a musician, in a performance at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Wednesday August 26, at 6:30 pm.

The event is open to the public and free to attend.

Making meaning through story and theater activities has been Karla Huntsman’s life work. Huntsman believes in the power of storytelling to infuse life, joy, connection with self, and connection with others no matter the age of the listener. She sings, plays guitar, autoharp, washboard and djembe drum as part of her storytelling performances.

Boot stomping to bluegrass in a 1920’s boat house turned theater with Lake Tahoe in the background, kicking back at free concerts on a historic lakeshore estate’s grand lawn, and experiencing the Washoe tribe’s ceremonial dances and drumming are some of the many iconic experiences at Lake Tahoe’s Valhalla Arts, Music & Theatre Festival this July.

A highlight of the 2015 Jazz & Beyond Festival will be a two-part Motown special. First is a free lecture-demonstration by musician-educator John Shipley. It will feature music, visuals, a guitar raffle, a no-host bar, and a guest appearance by Lloyd Williams of Otis Day and the Knights on Monday, August 17, at the Brewery Arts Center.

The second part of the Motown special is a ticketed concert showcasing Williams, the original singing voice from the hit movie Animal House, on Tuesday, August 18, 7 p.m., at the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William Street in Carson City.

The Carson City Library is pleased to welcome acclaimed Celtic fingerstyle guitarist Jerry Barlow for a special Sunday, July 26 concert. The program is free to the community.

Barlow is a warm, accessible performer and storyteller. His unique and skillfully delivered repertoire incorporates favorite traditional pieces as well as his own Celtic-inspired compositions.

Classical music of Spain and Hollywood’s most celebrated movie scores will highlight a weekend filled with Latin-fused flamenco and string symphony as world renowned guitarist Ana Vidović, opens and famed double bass player Jeremy McCoy closes the second weekend of Lake Tahoe SummerFest, Aug. 7-9 in Incline Village, Nev.

TACH (Traditional Association for Cultural Harmony) a non profit organization presents "Global Music and Dance Concert" in July, 2015. A two day concert will present a collaboration of Indo-American artist, an Indian Dance, Indian Classical, Jazz, Fusion, Saxophone, Flute, Harp.

I was talking with my 12-year-old daughter the other day about what she wants to do when she grows up. It’s the kind of conversation parents have been having with their children for many generations.

But in today’s world, this question has far deeper ramifications. That’s because a new technological wave is building on the horizon that will change the way we look at jobs, employment and the economy in general.

Thanks to the support of local agencies, businesses and the community, Concert Under the Stars, A Benefit for The Greenhouse Project has grown exponentially since its inception. The Fire is a high energy pure-drop Scottish music band, with world class fiddling in combination with bagpipes, guitar, bodhran, and whistle. They will appear tonight at the Brewery Arts Center in Carson City.

Lake Tahoe SummerFest’s fourth season, “Passport to a World of Music,” will bring Mozart, Beethoven, Mendelssohn to audiences July 31 – Aug. 16. The three weekend series of nine different concerts will transport attendees through masterpieces translated by renowned artists and a nationally acclaimed orchestra of 40 players.

The Brewery Arts Center, Carson City’s premiere epicenter for the arts since 1975, will present Autoharp Master, Singer and Storyteller Bryan Bowers on Saturday night, May 2 in the Maize Harris Jesse Black Box Theater.

From his rather unglamorous beginning as a street singer, Bryan Bowers has become a major artist on the traditional music circuit. He has redefined the autoharp and is also well known as a singer-songwriter. Bryan has a dynamic outgoing personality and an uncanny ability to enchant a crowd in practically any situation.

It’s Wednesday in our fair capital city and that means jazz and blues: jazz jam tonight at Sassafras and lunchtime blues and Americana at Comma Coffee. If you’re feeling a little bit country, than head over to Carson Lanes for some line dance instruction in the Eleventh Frame Lounge. For those of you in Dayton, may I suggest you see what the talented students at Dayton High are up to: their annual Night of the Arts is open to the community and showcases art, theater, music, and culinary savvy.

For 14 years, Mile High Jazz Band has been playing at Comma Coffee, 312 S. Carson Street, on the second Tuesday of every month.
