Does anyone out there actually believe that Congressional sequestration results in budget cuts? The federal spending under sequestration goes up every year without congress even passing a budget. If the automatic baseline budget grows less than is required by law then Washington, our media, and the New-speak columnists misinform the people of our nation that there has been a cut when in fact spending is increasing. There are no cuts which is why spending goes up each year.

Nevada’s unemployment rate fell to seasonally adjusted 9.7 percent in January, which is the 18th straight month the state has seen a decline in the number of people unemployed. Now below Rhode Island, the Silver State is no longer considered the state with the highest unemployment rate in the country, a position it had held since February 2010.

The unemployment rate in Carson City is down 1.8 percentage points since last year and stood at 11.2 percent in January 2013.

It is no secret that since the mid to late 1990’s young people turning 18 have not flown the nest to embark on their adult lives like previous generations. Parents, expecting that their fledgling adult would be anxious to venture out on their own, away from parental rules and prying eyes, have been unpleasantly surprised that movement toward independent living has been slow or even non-existent.

And they are perplexed by the choices their young adult children are making.

For John Bragg Jr., his haircut was bittersweet. On one hand, he hated long hair, but he had been letting it grow out since his sister had died after an apparent road-rage incident.

When it comes to tradition, Carson City has many, but how many include a huge game of family bingo, served up with delicious bowls of chili and plenty of opportunities to win some really nice prizes?

I spent most of January studying the faces of each Senatorial and Assembly lawmaker. I also tried to force myself to understand some of the bills, but I figured it would be better to just get the idea of it and learn along the way (which I did, and it worked). It’s become somewhat of a cliché, saying in a retrospective astonishment that something began as an idea. In theory, everything begins as an idea. But I’ve never been a part of something from the very beginning that would eventually lead to a fully realized organization like the Nevada Media Alliance, so you’ll have to forgive the cliché.

Sometimes it takes a while to get the big picture, to see things coming into focus. Now, I am not much for conspiracy theories, but if anything looks like it is being driven by design, this is one. The theories driving it were formulated many lifetimes ago. The people whose sick minds spawned them are long dead. For the life of me I do not understand how any egomaniac could possibly get his jollies from a trend he might have started but maybe not even his great-grandson might see coming to fruition. But there it is, a hundred year timeline on several fronts.

Youth Theatre Carson City is excited to announce our upcoming production of "Aladdin and His Wonderful, Magical Lamp," a magical adaptation of the classic tale, Friday through Sunday Jan. 11-13 at the Carson City Community Center and Jan. 18 at Piper’s Opera House in Virginia City.

The cast and crew are comprised of over 70 local children ages 5 to 18, who play all the classic characters including Aladdin, his pet monkey Alakazam, The Princess Jasmine and her handmaidens, the evil Jammal and his sister Halima, and not just one…but 3 Genies!

Several years ago Undersheriff Albertsen and I entertained a vision with representatives from the Nevada Highway Patrol regarding law enforcement services and unity in Carson City.

Now here is a story that SHOULD make your blood boil, especially because for some reason the story “hit” on Christmas Eve.

Regular readers of BikeCarson.com may have noticed that there have been far fewer postings lately. I suppose an explanation is warranted, because I don’t want you to think that I have lost interest in cycling, as this is not the case. I haven’t been riding my bike though, and it’s awfully hard to write about something I’m not actively engaged in.  After years of tuning-up my bike, it was time to tune-up my body.

The Gold Dust West Casino has a state of the art bowling center in Carson City that is the best place in town to take the family bowling for a day or night out.

The NIAA has a problem. They forget that they are running high school sports and not professional organizations. This is to tell them that giving exclusive broadcasting rights of all mediums to Gustin Sports Productions is beyond absurd. This is Nevada, where high school sports are not overwhelmingly huge. This is all about fun here not about money like some seem to think.

The Foundation for the Betterment of Carson City Parks and Recreation will be presenting awards to its 2012 recipients of its Special Recognition Awards in a brief ceremony on Monday, Nov. 7, at 3:00 p.m. at the monument at the entrance to the Pony Express Pavilion in Mills Park. The public is invited to attend this free event.

I attended a League of Women Voters' meeting last week ( October 16th). I may be have been dreaming, but people were mostly civil to each other. It was a refreshing change from so many discussions I've observed over the past two years. . . mostly angry shouting matches. Marilee Swirczek wrote recently about the "shout-out" at WNC which turned unruly when some opponents of the City Center Project started pushing and shoving an invited guest. I'm glad I wasn't there.

RENO – Gov. Mitt Romney fired up a crowd of about 2,000 enthusiastic Northern Nevada  voters today, urging them to get to the polls and help him take the battleground state that is Nevada 13 days from now.

Romney told the crowd that President Obama is out of ideas, out of excuses and will be out of office come Nov. 6.

The president, “doesn’t understand what it takes to get this economy going, he doesn’t have a plan to get jobs for Americans, I do and that’s why I’m going to win,” he said.

Western Nevada College's Latino Student Club is seeking performers for a fund-raising event on Friday, Nov. 9, that brings students and the community together for an evening of cultural entertainment. It is time that Carson City gets behind their college’s athletic programs. Western Nevada College has had athletics since 2005. They have had rodeo, women’s soccer, women’s softball, and perhaps the cornerstone of the entire athletics, the men’s baseball. All of these teams have amped up the enrollment of Western Nevada College and yet, the athletics continue to struggle financially because of the lack of local support.

CARSON CITY – Nevada’s next two-year general fund budget would grow by $279 million to $6.46 billion based on the initial spending requests submitted by state agencies, information released today by the Budget Division shows.
