Carson City will hold a public information open house this coming Monday, April 4, on the proposed fiscal year 2017 budget. The open house will be at the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William Street, Carson City.

There will be two sessions: 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Each session will begin in the Sierra Room with an overview of the budget process and a summary of the proposed budget.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office School Resource Officers received training this week on basic school enforcement.  In July the SRO staff will travel to receive advanced certification in time for the 2016-2017 school years.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office has acquired a new permanent single law enforcement non-emergency telephone number to contact the city-wide dispatch center.

The new number is 887-COPS (887-2677). This telephone number will eventually replace most of the older telephone lines that are currently in use and will eventually result in a cost savings of $50 per month, per telephone line still in use, said Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong.

Kelly Colvin has been named the new audit division chief for the Nevada Gaming Control Board, the agency announced Monday. Colvin replaces former Audit Division Chief Shirley Springer who retired in February.

Recently, we’ve been reflecting on our experiences over the past year of public service together and the lessons we’ve learned.

Sheriff Ken Furlong is pleased to announce that Carson City Sheriff’s Office Reserve Commander Tom Crawford was the recipient of the Governor’s Points of Light Award, Volunteer Manager of the year.

Commander Crawford has been responsible for the Uniform Reserves of the Sheriff’s Office since 2005 and made significant contributions to the community as a whole. During his tenure, Tom has overseen the activities of over 150 reserves, many of whom who have gone on to become full time Deputy Sheriff’s here in the community, and surrounding jurisdictions.

In Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell’s State of the City speech last January, his theme was “Time for Change” and that we “have not only the opportunity, but in a very real sense, the obligation, to provide and present a face to the world that shows our pride in being the capital of the great state of Nevada.”

Keeping with this bold direction, Carson City announces “Carson City Connect,” a citizen relationship management system that is designed to make it easier to report everything from potholes and abandoned vehicles to get information about different city departments.

Driving gets more difficult as we get older. Our reactions may be slower as our physical and thinking functions decline. There are more distractions now than there used to be. Of course the roads are more congested and there are a few dangerously aggressive drivers out there.

On Sept. 4 Carson City Parks and Recreation's registration site, ActiveNet, will be upgraded to a new Customer User Interface. Parks and Recreation uses ActiveNet for many of the daily functions such as pool memberships, class and sport league registrations, out-of-school time programs, and facility rentals.

Four remote mountain peaks in central and northeastern Nevada are home to a new real-time camera fire-detection system that is helping to protect Nevada’s forests and rangelands.

A Bureau of Land Management Nevada grant awarded to the University of Nevada, Reno to develop, install, and maintain a remote camera system, is in the initial phase of a five-year planned comprehensive network to cover vast areas of the state for early fire detection and response.

Western Nevada College is making it easier to work toward a college degree and career skills. This summer, the college offers a variety of courses on campus and online, beginning Monday, June 8, through Saturday, Aug. 1.

A wide range of subjects will be available to students on the Carson City campus, including computer science, advanced mathematics, geology, biology, sign language, music, accounting, auto collision and composition, and more.

A controversial plan to outsource the city of North Las Vegas’ human resources functions will go to the City Council Wednesday, but some city workers say the move is a foregone conclusion — right down to the company to get the contract....

While first responders on a fire, accident or crime scene are deputies, ambulance and fire department personnel, it is 911 dispatch who are the lifeline between the victim and responding agencies. Tucked in a high-tech facility all their own, the Carson City Sheriff’s Office Communications 911 Center responds 24-hours a day, seven days a week, day or night to crisis phone calls.

This week, emergency dispatchers are being recognized nationwide as part of National Public-Safety Telecommunications Week. For the team of 19 emergency dispatchers who work at the Carson City communications center, their work is essential to saving lives and property.

Small businesses in Nevada were a big deal in 2014. The Nevada Small Business Development Center, a statewide resource for business assistance and headquartered in the University of Nevada, Reno’s College of Business, helped open 136 new small businesses in the state last year.

“It’s easy to forget the impact small businesses can have, especially with the growing focus on many big-named businesses in the state,” Sam Males, director of the Nevada SBDC, said. “These smaller businesses created 470 jobs and $18 million in new financing, clearly making a marked impact.”

The United Nations General Assembly has declared 2015 the International Year of Soils to raise the awareness of the importance of soils for food security, clean water and other essential ecosystem functions. Soils are a hidden resource that we too often take for granted.

It takes between 100 years to 1,000 years to form one centimeter of healthy soil and only one to 10 years to destroy it. This valuable, but often unrecognized, resource is threatened by erosion, natural disasters, salinization, compaction, acidification and nutrient decline.

Winterfest is upon us here at Carson High School. The upcoming week will be filled with activites and celebrations for the students and staff at CHS. The theme of Winterfest is WinterFlix, like Netflix. Congratulations to the Winterfest Candidates who have been nominated by their classmates. One prince and princess will be chosen by a class vote for the freshmen, sophomores and juniors. One king and queen will be chosen among the senior class. Royalty court will be announced Thursday.

The Ormsby Sportsmen's Association of Carson City has announced that it has disbanded and closed its doors after an existence of almost 70 years, beginning way back in August, 1945.

Carson City sound system DJ Justin Thistle is now featuring a new interactive mobile event called “The Incredible Game Show” that he hopes will become all the rage at events and parties for his clients.

Thistle owns and operates the mobile company Justincredible DJ Entertainment covering Carson City, Lake Tahoe and Northern Nevada. His new technology follows the authentic stylings of popular television game shows such as “Jeopardy,” “Family Feud,” “Minute to Win It,” and “Who wants to be a Millionaire?”

The CHS Ski Team will be hosting the latest Warren Miller Film, “No Turning Back” on Dec. 12, 7 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center. Tickets can be purchased from any ski team member or from their advisor Adrienne Schneider.

Tickets are $8 for students and $12 for adults. They are also selling raffle tickets in conjunction with the movie. A multiple of prizes are available that evening at the showing of the film. Raffle tickets cost $1 each or 25 tickets for $20. Doors open at 6 PM.

The Foundation for the Betterment of Carson City Parks and Recreation will present Special Recognition Awards for year 2014 recipients in a brief ceremony on Tuesday, Oct. 21, at 4:30 p.m. at the monument at the entrance to the Marv Teixeira Pavilion (formerly Pony Express Pavilion) in Mills Park. The public is invited to attend this free, outdoor event.

The plain news is that Tesla motors sealed a deal with Nevada to locate a major new plant in Reno. You'd think that would be good news, with major investment and thousands of permanent jobs for the area. People should be cheering. But it comes in exchange for major tax breaks. That’s the bad news. So, instead of cheering, some people are turning on the Governor and others. Some, like the Nevada Policy Research Institute (NPRI) are raising policy, legal and constitutional issues.

Independence Day is upon us and many of you will take to the roads to visit our local lakes, rivers and parks. Should you find yourself celebrating the holiday with adult beverages, remember to designate a driver or take a taxi cab home.

If you are boating, stay sober while on the water. Operating a watercraft on a crowded lake takes skill and reflexes to avoid crashes or injury to swimmers. Enjoying this time with friends and family can be fun however they are expecting you, their Captain, to get them back to dry land safely.
