Carson City Parks and Recreation Awards Ceremony October 21
The Foundation for the Betterment of Carson City Parks and Recreation will present Special Recognition Awards for year 2014 recipients in a brief ceremony on Tuesday, Oct. 21, at 4:30 p.m. at the monument at the entrance to the Marv Teixeira Pavilion (formerly Pony Express Pavilion) in Mills Park. The public is invited to attend this free, outdoor event.
The awards will be presented in the following categories:
Volunteer of the Years - Rex Jennings has volunteered his time performing a variety of tasks and functions at Lone Mountain Cemetery for the last 12 years. Among other duties, he has provided minor maintenance, assisted customers with questions, helped in locating gravesites, and put out and raised the flags on holidays.
Volunteer of the Year - Donna N. Inversin oversees the Easy Walk and Easy Bike program along with being a trail advocate. She dedicates her time to discovering new trails and possible walking and biking paths to take all who are interested.
Organization of the Year - The Carson City Redevelopment Authority Citizens Committee (RACC) uses allocated redevelopment funds to better serve citizens. Among recent projects funded are the LED signage in front of the Community Center, needed improvements to the Carson City Fairgrounds (Fuji Park) that enabled the hosting of the NV150 Fair, and funding for signage outside the fairgrounds.
Business of the Year - Sign Pro, owned by Steve Reynolds, gave the Parks and Recreation Department many hours of volunteer assistance and guidance with the new digital sign project at the Community Center, including advice on developing technical specifications, evaluating proposals, and assisting in the Special Use Permit process.
This year the Foundation will present a one-time "Special Recognition Award" to former Mayor Marv Teixeira and his two sons, Allen and Matt, for their involvement and promotion of youth sports in Carson City. The awards will be presented posthumously to Marv and Allen.
Each recipient's name will be placed on the monument in Mills Park. The selection of award recipients is a cooperative effort among the Carson City Parks and Recreation Department, the Foundation for the Betterment of Carson City Parks and Recreation, and the Carson City Historical Society. In addition, the names of Eugene Paslov and Jacki T. Montgomery will be added to the Wall of Memory.
