LABOR DAY WEEKEND

Outdoors with Don Q: Go high to fish and stay cool

If you’re someone like me, summer’s sweltering heat is not much fun.

I am an outdoors person who dearly loves the cold, frost, ice and snow of winter, and I absolutely and totally wilt at this time of the year.

I am miserable and grouchy during these hot weather months.

I hate the weather anytime it gets past 80-85 degrees. So, when it gets hot, I either hide in the tree shade in our backyard, stay indoors where it is delightfully air conditioned or go high in the Great Outdoors to avoid the miserable heat, especially in the month of August.

Coin collectors and numismatists from all over the country will be flocking to Carson City August 26-27 to purchase the coveted Mint Mark “CC” coins and other collectibles. Twenty-five dealers will be on hand from 8:30 am – 4:30 pm both Friday and Saturday, giving free appraisals and offering valuable wares to buy, sell, and trade. Fabulous prizes will be raffled off both days, culminating in the Grand Prize Drawing at 3 pm on Saturday.

Movie Review: 'Cowboys & Aliens' some fun amid the cliches

The sci-fi-western-thriller "Cowboys & Aliens," currently showing at the Fandango Galaxy multiplex in Carson City, finally achieves what most studios have long sought, a film with five writers, much of whose script is simply explosions.

Movie Review: 'Friends with Benefits' breaks old ground, but Mila Kuinis is hot

At the Carson City Fandango Galaxy cineplex, I was a bit confused watching the new movie. Once I got the idea of the plot --- guy, girl agree to sex with no emotional strings attached, I thought I had been caught in a time warp. I'd seen this movie, only it was titled "No Strings Attached" and starred Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher.

Outdoors with Don Q: Be fire smart and create a fire-safe zone

CARSON CITY — With our current long daylight hours, hot weather, gusty afternoon winds, low humidity and vegetation rapidly drying out, you need to be aware of the ever-increasing fire danger surrounding us.
Our countryside is tinder dry, and it would only take a moment of carelessness, sparks from target shooting, illegal fireworks, a hot vehicle muffler on a dirt road, an abandoned campfire or a tossed cigarette to create a roaring inferno.

Strike it rich in the Shasta Cascade region

The Shasta Cascade region remains a popular destination for those seeking to strike it rich by gold panning, or to simply try something new.
Many of the towns throughout the region are rich in gold mining and gold-rush era history, many of which have literally stood the test of time.
If you are interested in feeling the “rush” that so many hopefuls experienced, then grab a pan and try your luck in one of the many creeks or rivers.
