Saturday, October 12

Democratic presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren danced to Aretha Franklin and posed for selfies as she marched Friday night in the Las Vegas Pride parade. The Massachusetts senator, who is gaining momentum in the crowded field of White House hopefuls ...

Just after 4 p.m. on Friday first responders were called to an accident with reported injury in the parking lot of the Olive Garden after two vehicles collided.

One woman is reported to be pregnant and an ambulance was called to respond for medical clearance.

Motorists should avoid the area or use caution at present.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include the final V&T Railway train rides of the 2019 season, the 27th annual Carson City Pumpkin Patch at Seeliger Elementary School, fundraisers around town, coin press demonstrations at the Nevada State Museum, comedy at the Carson Nugget and more!

The Carson City Fire Department will allow open burning, with a permit, beginning Saturday, Oct. 12, 2019 through Nov. 10, 2019.

This Friday and Saturday, Comedian Jen Murphy will be performing at The Carson Comedy Club in Carson City! Jen Murphy is a nationally touring comedian with an innocent look and sharp wit.

Her side-splitting delivery has landed her headlining gigs at comedy clubs and festivals across the country! She has a half hour special called “This is Why You’re Still Single,” that’s aired on the TLC network.

Doors open at 7:15 p.m. The show begins at 8 p.m.

Initially, I collected many of the Arts and Crafts as well as WPA Art Deco Era American pottery makers in clay before focusing on the American Studio Pottery Movement. And from my collecting, I have always sought examples that have a timeless design.

Heading into Thursday, Oct. 10, 2019 and we're looking at continued sunshine and cool temperatures, with some warming in time for the weekend. Activities ahead around the capital city feature a workshop by Carson City TRIAD to prepare residents for Medicare open enrollment, a Muscle Powered led afternoon hike at Sedge Road, the grand opening of My Place Hotel, modern western square dancing lessons, art showings, library activities and more. RENO — Work For Warriors Nevada is set to host its Law Enforcement and First Responder Career Fair in Reno at Idlewild Park in the California Building on Friday, Oct. 11 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Mike Thomas will step outside North America for his October presentations at Western Nevada College’s Jack C. Davis Observatory in Carson City.

Carson Nugget and the Carson City based Food for Thought organization are hosting a coat drive for children now through Nov. 15. Organizers of this drive are asking for donations of new coats, for children ages 5 to 18, which will be distributed to children at the Kids Christmas Brunch, to be held Dec. 23 at the Carson Nugget Grand Ballroom.

Breezy and cool conditions are on the way as we look ahead to Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2019. Events lined around the capital city area include art workshops and showings, a "scary makeup" class in time for Halloween at the Carson Nugget, a luncheon with Congressman Mark Amodei hosted by the Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce, family story time at the Carson City Library, a women's safety meeting, Salsa dancing and more. Nevada Chief Economist David Schmidt will be the featured speaker at the Carson City Chamber Soup’s On! luncheon on Tuesday, Oct. 15 at Gold Dust West beginning at 11:30 a.m. The public is invited to hear Schmidt give his reasoning behind his statement that “Nevada is statistically overdue for a recession.”

CARSON CITY — V&T Railway will bring its event-filled 2019 season to a close this weekend with a final 150th Anniversary train on Friday, Oct. 11, vintage steam trains on Saturday, Oct. 12 and Sunday, Oct. 13 and a Toast of the Canyon spirits train on Saturday, Oct. 12 following the steam train.

An approaching low pressure system will bring strong, gusty winds Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a Red Flag warning for Carson City and much of the Western Nevada Sierra Front.

Going into the second week of October, there's plenty of events around the capital city for this Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2019 including a morning walk, evening hike and a bike ride with Muscle Powered. There's also art showings, the grand opening of Carson City's Postal Annex, family movie night at the Carson City Library featuring "Muppets from Space," as well as Big Band jazz music with a fall theme at Living the Good Life and more. Enjoy the day.

I dined today with a lady from West Virginia and a lady from North Dakota, and came away from the table one mixed-up Cigiliano. The lady from West Virginia started talking about "noodling," which got the lady from North Dakota started on, "doodling."

Only one week left to submit nominations for the 2019 Mayor's Arts Awards. The award recognizes individuals and organizations committed to elevating arts excellence within our state capital. Nominees must be residents of Carson City, work in Carson City, or demonstrate their contribution to the arts in Carson City.

Heading into Monday, Oct. 7, 2019, we're looking at continued sunny skies and a high near 80. Events around the capital city include a discussion on wild horses, the first of a six-week standup comedy class, art showings, West Coast swing dancing and more. Enjoy the day.

The Capital City Arts Initiative presents its exhibition, "Saludos Amigos" by artist Justin Favela at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery. The exhibition is in the gallery now through Jan. 29, 2020, at the Courthouse, 885 E Musser Street, Carson City. The exhibition is free and the public is cordially invited. The second-floor gallery is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The SLHS Falcons Cross Country Team had another strong day at Shadow Mountain Park in Sparks on Friday Oct. 4. Teagan Hansen finished second in a photo finish with Matt Gordon of Galena.

In what amounted to a preview of the league and region championship meets, the Carson High School girls and boys cross country teams posted fifth- and eighth-place finishes respectively at the Reed Invitational on Friday afternoon in Sparks.

The Friends of the Carson City Library, with the library board and staff, are offering a meet and greet with the new library director, Tod Colegrove, on Friday, October 11 from 4:30p.m. to 6 p.m.

No RSVP is required to meet the new director. Those interested should simply head over to the library digitorium located at 900 N. Roop St. for an opportunity to get to know Colegrove more over coffee and a treat.

Happy Saturday, Carson City! We're going to have a warm day in the low 70s, so be sure to throw on your t-shirts which may be the last time this fall (barring the typical end of November inexplicable heat wave).

The upcoming Carson City Republican Women's Club meeting will have Nevada State Senator James Settelmeyer as the guest speaker.

The meeting will be held in the Casino Fandango ballroom on Tuesday, October 15, 2019. Social hour begins at 11:00 a.m. and the meeting/luncheon at 11:30 a.m.
