A wildlife bill supported by the Nevada Department of Wildlife is now before both houses of Congress. The Recovering America’s Wildlife Act recommends crucial funding for conservation of those fish and wildlife species in greatest need across the country.

With the end of the heat wave nowhere in sight, people are beginning to get a little stir crazy stuck inside lying in front of the air-conditioning all day. Luckily, Carson City and the surrounding areas offer many options to keep cool while we wait for high temperatures to come down some.

Hello fellow anglers. If you think you can go up to the higher lakes to get away from the heat, think again. It is hot even way up at the 8,000 foot level.

Tuesdays are happening in Carson City. Tonight, the Mile High Jazz Band takes to the stage at Living the Good Life for their monthly performance. Take advantage of the new program at the Nevada State Library and Archives: once a month, you’re welcome to bring a lunch and listen to a presentation. Celebrate the newest exhibit in the OXS Gallery inside the Nevada Arts Council.

The Carson City Board of Supervisors is seeking applications from persons interested in serving on the Advisory Board to Manage Wildlife.

Hello fellow anglers, the weather is great and the fishing is on fire. Speaking of fire, there are some very stringent restrictions to adhere to when venturing out this summer. Campfires are only allowed in designated campgrounds.

CARSON CITY — Law enforcement officers across Nevada will be on heightened alert for those violating boating under the influence laws during the annual Operation Dry Water weekend, June 29-July 1, according to the Nevada Department of Wildlife.

This is going to be an epic Fathers’ Day weekend. Carson City Off-Road sponsored by Epic Rides has taken over downtown with everything mountain bike and plays host to a free Music Festival in McFadden Plaza. Don’t miss Arts and Culture Day at the Nevada State Railroad Museum with unlimited rides on the Steam Train, special vendors, and more. Stewart Indian School will be a hotspot of activity with the annual Fathers’ Day PowWow underway. This is just the tip of the iceberg, read on for more fun than you’ll know what to do with.

Hello fellow anglers, the kids fishing days are behind us and now's the time for adults to whet their lines. Before we get to the report, I would like to stress the importance of fire danger as conditions are such a tinder box that a spark could set off a fire at any time, such as what happened this week in Carson City.

CARSON CITY — The 10th annual Concert Under the Stars, A Benefit for the Greenhouse Project, takes place Wednesday, July 11 at Brewery Arts Center, featuring Rock & Roll Hall of Famer’s Jefferson Starship and Terrapin Crossroad’s house band, Midnight North.

If you didn’t take advantage of early voting, then today is the day to cast that Primary ballot. The local library can be your best friend during summer vacation; Carson City celebrated the kick-off to their summer program on Sunday, while the library in Minden will host a party this evening to get the summer events started. The State Library and Archives have started a new lunchtime program. Join them for Archives Appetizer, a monthly speaker program that will cover different topics of Nevada History. Muscle Powered features two guided hikes on Tuesdays.

The Nevada Division of State Parks is excited to encourage Nevada residents to participate in the second annual America’s State Parks 2018 photo contest, sponsored by our partnering agency, the National Association of State Park Directors.

It’s going to be a breezy weekend, so you may want to rethink spending the day at the lake. Luckily, plenty of options are available just about anywhere you are. Carson City has a car show and Brewfest hitting the downtown corridor, and to the south, Minden and Gardnerville are having their party of the year: Carson Valley Days. It’s World Doll Day at the Nevada State Museum with special displays, activities, and a special performance by the local Young Chautauquans.

The Nevada Department of Wildlife's annual Free Fishing Day is this Saturday, June 9. Anglers may fish in any public water throughout the Silver State without a fishing license. All limits and other regulations apply.

CARSON CITY — Nevada residents and visitors are invited to “Discover Nevada State Parks” on Saturday, June 9. Park visitors will receive free day use admission and free fishing, no license required, at all of Nevada’s State Parks.

Hello fellow anglers, there's a lot going on in June as I will be fishing with around 2,000 kids over the next couple of weekends. This weekend I will be at the Lampe Park Kids Fishing Derby in Gardnerville and the Sawmill Pond Kids Fishing Derby in South Lake Tahoe.

RENO — In addition to navigating pristine wild rivers and dirt roads, big-fish wrangler Zeb Hogan of Nat Geo WILD’s “Monster Fish” show also had to navigate a maze of dangerous military zones in order to tell the story of his travel and research in the remote and wild Salween River that runs through China, Thailand and Myanmar.

Memorial Day weekend is often thought of as the kick-off to summer, but in Northern Nevada we know that the weather is a fickle creature. The weather should be dryer and warmer as the weekend progresses but have back-up plans for your bar-be-que, just in case. From the Downtown Carson City Ghost Walk to the Rockin’ Rib Fest at Casino Fandango, a day hike with Muscle Powered to the Spring Blinky Man night-time costumed bike pub crawl – this weekend is chock-full of fun for locals and visitors alike, for the young and young-at-heart.

It is time to gather up the family and gear and head to your favorite recreation spot. Memorial Day weekend is the kick off for the summer, and traditionally it is a very busy weekend on the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. Forest visitors can enjoy biking, camping, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, picnicking, and many more recreations activities this summer.

The Carson Fly Fishing Club will conduct a Introductory Fly-Fishing Academy June 15, 6:30 p.m. June 16, all day starting at 9 a.m. at the Ormsby Room, Carson City Sheriff's Office, at 911 E. Musser St., Carson City.

The course will cover equipment, casting, entomology, flies, and knots & leaders.

The casting portion will be late afternoon at Baily Pond on June 16. The purpose of the class is to learn the basic techniques of fly fishing. This will be the eighteenth year that the Carson Fly Fishing Club has presented this class free to the public.

It’s going to be a chili weekend, and that has nothing to do with the weather. The annual Chili on the Comstock Competition takes over the tiny town of Virginia City, including a saloon crawl Saturday and the hilarious ‘Fun with the Runs’ 5K. Families will have a hard time choosing between the Cops and Kids Open House and Safety Fair at the Sheriff’s Office and the ‘Kids to Parks’ Day activities at Silver Saddle Ranch. Hello fellow anglers, We are only a week away from Memorial weekend, which means anglers will be everywhere enjoying the beautiful Sierra. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Nevada Department of Wildlife will be planting our surrounding lakes, ponds and rivers with trout.

Mother’s Day is Sunday, and there will be plenty of ways for the family to enjoy spending time together all weekend long. Treat Mom to some new flowers for the garden at the annual Greenhouse Project Plant Sale. The Nevada State Museum has a day full of cowboy-related activities planned. Head up to Virginia City on the V and T for a memorable ride through the hills. It’s Bike Month in Carson City, and the ladies’ Tuesday bike ride up Ash Canyon has returned for the season. You’ll need a helmet and a trail-ready bike if you’d like to join in. A hike up Goni Road with Muscle Powered will be worth the views and a good work-out. Mile High Jazz Band has teamed up with vocalist Jakki Ford for this month’s performance; you’ll find them tonight at Living the Good Life. TUESDAY, May 8: Things to do in Carson City

Dozens of children and families enjoyed outdoor recreation Saturday at Baily Pond, behind the Carson City Fairgrounds, during the annual Tom Brooks Memorial Kids Fishing Day sponsored by the Carson City Lions Club.

Not a cloud in the sky, and yet we have been hit by a perfect storm: Cinco de Mayo, Kentucky Derby Day, and the monthly wine walk have all collided. Let me tell you, downtown is going to be hopping, not to mention the Early Season Farmers Market making its seasonal debut in the parking lot at W. Musser and N. Nevada – just behind Due Sorella. Take the kids down to Bailys Pond at Fuji Park for the annual Tom Brooks Memorial Kids’ Fishing Day. A trip to the train museum comes with the opportunity to ride on the Historic McKeen Motor Car.

Hello fellow anglers, I can't tell you how exciting this time of year is. Many of the local rivers have opened for fishing, the higher lakes are thawing and local kids fishing events are taking shape.

In early spring 2018, the Nevada Division of State Lands completed the conveyance of 6,281 acres of federal land to nearly double the size of the Steptoe Valley Wildlife Management Area near Ely, Nev.

The Carson City Lions Club will hold its annual Kids Fishing Day at Baily Pond at Fuji Park in Carson City this Saturday, May 5 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
