We’ve reached the mid-point of May, which puts summer just around the corner. I suspect there are plenty of students, and teachers too, that are counting down the days. The Carson High HOSA team is headed to their National Conference soon, and lunch or dinner at Chili’s will help get them there, just mention fundraiser to the server. We also have a T-Shirt fundraiser today at Firehouse Subs and Battle Born Ammunition & Firearms, LLC. The fundraiser is for Makayla Warner who is battling a rare kidney disease.

As the week rolls along, it’s easy to get excited about the weekend. Genoa’s Cowboy Festival takes over the tiny town with music, poetry, artisans, food, and fun and the Comstock hills will roar to life with motorbikes during the annual Virginia City Grand Prix. While you’re waiting, enjoy a jaunt with Muscle Powered along the Carson River or take an Easy Walk to the Pioneer Cemetery. Tonight, songstress Canyon White will take the stage at Living the Good Life.

March Madness spills into April with the NCAA Championship Game final showdown. Watch the Gonzaga Bulldogs take on the UNC Tar Heels tonight at 6 p.m. If you find yourself at the Fox Brewpub you may be one of the two lucky people with a chance at free beer for a year. Find out what the city has planned as they walk you through the upcoming budget offered at two public open house presentations. It’s a firefighter kind of day. Not only will they be honored at today’s Legislative Session, Firehouse Subs is hosting a fundraiser for the Fritch Elementary School’s PTA.

It seems like overnight the crabapples have exploded into bloom. Take advantage of a beautiful day by joining one of the walks organized every Tuesday. An easy walk with Parks and Rec will take you along a portion of the Mexican Ditch Trail today. The Muscle Powered walk in early evening is more strenuous. Fathers will want to get moving if they plan on taking their daughter to the Carson High Father Daughter Dance this Friday. Swing by the High School office between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. for tickets or shoot an email to teacher Angila Golek to make sure they’re waiting at will call.

Today we say farewell to February. I’m chomping at the bit for spring and Mardi Gras means it’s just around the corner. The Sierra Nevada Forums return to the Brewery Arts Center with a presentation on civility in a time of political differences. The Carson City Photography Club is welcoming new members: every month you’ll find a different assignment. Those in the nursing field will want to attend the RN Job Fair at Carson Tahoe Hospital for new opportunities.

I just keep telling myself that the spring flowers will be amazing this year, but honestly, I’m growing weary of all this rain. Several of our hiking and bike trails have been affected, the sports fields are a muddy mess, and we are still in danger of more flooding.

It’s not exactly warm outside, but compared to some of the bitter cold we’ve had this month, it’s not that bad. Take advantage of the dry weather by joining in on the Parks and Recreation Easy Walk in John Mankins Park in Silver Oak. It’s a Jazz Extravaganza at the Community Center tonight. Mile High Jazz Band has teamed up with the Carson High and Carson Middle School jazz bands for their annual concert. The monthly fundraiser at Firehouse Subs makes raising money for Relay for Life as easy as ordering dinner.

Carson City assesses flood damage, city crews work to resolve closed roads

The Carson City Emergency Operations Center will close its operation at approximately 5 p.m. today. Damage assessment teams will continue their work through the week.
The National Weather Service states that snow is expected later tonight in the Carson City area, with the possibility of periods of heavy snow. We encourage drivers to exercise caution as road conditions can become dangerous.

As October marches along we find ourselves nearing election day. Head to the first floor of the courthouse to earn your 'I Voted' sticker now; early voting continues until Nov. 4. Another way to make your voice heard today is by attending the Arts Town Hall sponsored by the Nevada Arts Association. They are looking for the ways that arts and culture can be improved in the Carson City area, among other things. While the mornings can be chilly, a walk with Muscle Powered along the Freeway Multi-use Path will get your blood pumping.

Canyon White is one of the area’s favorite singer/songwriters. Enjoy her tunes and some great food tonight as Living the Good Life goes acoustic.

Where has the time gone? We are moments away from Labor Day weekend with its Best of the West Rib Cook-off, monthly Downtown Wine Walk, Fallon Cantaloupe Festival, and Virginia City’s Civil War Days. Enjoy a walk in the Ronald D. Wilson Memorial Park, just west of Emerson Drive. Canyon White, the award-winning singer-songwriter, can be found at her weekly gig at Living the Good Life joined by Keith Alan Barnett. Dance it up: swing at El Charro, country line dance at Carson Lanes, or square dancing in Genoa are on the table.

Firehouse Subs and Relay For Life have partnered the last Tuesday of every month to Celebrate, Remember and Fight Back. On Tuesday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., 10 percent of all sales will go to Relay For Life of Carson City.

Firehouse Subs Store Supports Firefighters

While visiting the local Firehouse Subs restaurant on E. William Street today I noticed that one entire corner of the store was piled from floor to ceiling with packaged goods. I inquired about this, and was told that the store was supporting firefighters from Susanville, CA in their efforts to fight a large, ongoing fire.

Northern Nevada JobConnect host job fairs this week in Reno and Carson City

Nevada JobConnect will hold two job fairs this week, Wednesday, in Reno and Thursday in Carson City. The job fairs are from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day.

The job fair on Wednesday will be held at the Summit Mall at 13945 S. Virginia Street, Suite 636 in Reno and the Thursday job fair will be held at the Carson City Fuji Park Exhibit Hall at 601 Old Clear Creek Road.
