A sunny summer weekend has arrived and it brings numerous fun ways to seize the day. You can always head out hiking or spend the day at the pool, but the Carson City Fair is just here until Sunday. Farm animals, great exhibits, live entertainment, a carnival, and a bull-riding rodeo can be found at Fuji Park. Park your car at the Super Walmart on Topsy and you’ll be treated to a free shuttle. Go a little bit country at the Brewery Arts Center tonight; they are bringing back the Southern Drawl Band to the Minnesota Street Stage for this week’s free concert.

SATURDAY:

Today’s the day. Archie, the Reno Aces mascot, has been entrusted to once again oversee the grand opening of the Carson City Fair at Fuji Park. The soft opening of the accompanying carnival begins at 6 p.m. with one dollar rides. It’s Miss Scarlet with the lead pipe in the Observatory as the Carson City Library hosts a super-sized game of Clue for teens. Families will enjoy Beauty and the Beast, complete with a craft, if they sign up for the Library’s movie night. UPDATE TUESDAY 12:42PM: The Preacher Fire has burned 7,651 acres, according to the Incident Management Team that flew over the fire Tuesday morning to assess the situation.
Douglas County Sheriff Office and Nevada Highway Patrol are working with Nevada Department of Transportation to update the reader boards along Highway 395 from China Springs to Minden warning drivers of low visibility due to smoke.

The weekend is inching closer, and bringing with it one of Carson City’s favorite events – The Taste of Downtown. The annual fundraiser for the Advocates to End Domestic Violence brings everyone downtown for samplings from our local restaurants, live music, and a good time had by all. Stay busy and the week will just fly by.

The Aurelia Chamber Players will perform at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park at 6:30 pm on Thursday, July 20.

Are you ready for one of the best Wednesdays of the year? The annual Concert Under the Stars just gets bigger and better every year. Food trucks, a silent auction, an exciting live auction, and of course, some amazing music – this year, the Family Stone will be rocking the Brewery Arts Center Minnesota Street Stage. For some quieter entertainment, Doug Watson appears as ‘Will Rogers’ at Dangberg Home Historic Ranch. Take the kids to Galaxy Theaters tonight and introduce them to a timeless favorite, The Sandlot.

Happy Wednesday, Carson City. The long holiday weekend is over, but you can keep the good times rolling. The Fox Brewpub is hosting their monthly Whiskey Wednesday tonight, complete with raffle prizes and of course, whiskey. The Classic Cinema Club pushed back their monthly movie viewing by a day, so head over to the BAC Performance Hall to watch ‘Three Came Home.’ Keep Tahoe Blue will be starting the day at numerous beaches; their annual clean-up is necessary after the fireworks.

As the summer continues, the kids can get restless. Beat the heat indoors with bowling specials at Gold Dust West and Carson Lanes. BMX racing is fun for all ages, and you can check it out for yourself at the weekly practice night at the Livermore Sports Complex on Edmonds. Grab your smartest friends for DJ Trivia at the Westside Pour House, just get there early if you want to order dinner, too. Hosts John and Cherie Shipley invite you to the jazz jam at Living the Good Life; you never know who’ll join them on stage.

Happy Wednesday, Carson City. The Wild West is still alive and well; the Reno Rodeo and Carnival is going on right now. Snowshoe Thompson comes to life at the Dangberg Home Historic Ranch as Steven Hale performs a Chautauqua tonight. Head over to the Carson Mall for their Home and Garden Show. The Greenhouse Garden Center has set up lovely displays and will help you find just the right thing to make your yard a little slice of heaven. Tonight you can choose a jazz jam, karaoke, or trivia to get you over the mid-week hump.

To borrow a phrase, it takes a village to raise a fair. The Carson City Fair, returning this year after hiatus in 2016, is no exception.

The Pony Express rides again. Actually, the re-ride is an annual occurrence, and always comes right through the heart of Carson City. See the mochila hand-off at the corner of Second and Curry Streets today around 12:30 p.m. (but can be up to three hours early or late) and you can follow its historic route online HERE. The Nevada National Guard celebrates Flag Day and the Army’s anniversary on the Capitol Grounds at 10:00 a.m.

Each summer since 2003, the historic Comstock community of Silver City has offered free, public programming in science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM). Last week the annual program kicked off with a blues concert in the park, and this Tuesday, June 13 the program continues with science activities led by Jim Barcellos of University of Nevada Reno Cooperative Extension (UNCE).

I hope that no one is thinking that the middle of the week has nothing to offer. You’ll find some melodic rock all the way from Los Angeles when The Battlefield hits the stage at Sassafras. If you live or work downtown, the Public Meeting regarding the upcoming Epic Rides event will of great interest to you. Meet local artist, Carol Brown, at the reception celebrating her work in Comma Coffee’s Backseat Gallery. Wind down with some Jack Daniel’s at the Fox Brewpub – they’re celebrating Whiskey Wednesday in the Fox’ Den.

Thursday was Agriculture Day at Empire Elementary School in Carson City. Woody Worthington, president of the Carson and Douglas County Farm Bureau, helped coordinate with the Nevada Department of Agriculture and several local agencies to provide the experience for students.

New “Farm to Market” series of original prints, by local artist, Carol Brown, opens June 2nd, at Comma Coffee, 213 South Carson St, in historic downtown Carson City, across from the Sate Legislature Building. The public is invited to a free reception with the artist, in the Backseat Gallery, Wednesday, June 7, 2017, 5-7 p.m. The exhibition continues through June 29.

Under the cool shade of a grove of trees behind Fuji Park and across Clear Creek near Baily Pond rest two Union soldiers.

The American Civil War veterans were laid to rest here more than a century ago back when the property was site of the Ormsby County Poor Farm.

I’m not exactly sure what a ‘cupcake war’ is, but whatever the Carson Library has planned, it sounds delicious. Just make sure you register online to participate. Today is relatively quiet around town: we always have some great art exhibits to discover, but not too many planned events. DJ Trivia Night at Westside Pour House pits your smarts against other teams while surrounded by good food and drink. Jazz at Living the Good Life will put some swing in your step for the next few days.

A Small Stream Flood Advisory for snowmelt has been issued by the National Weather Service for low lying ranch land in areas south of Carson City into Carson Valley in Douglas County, Southern Washoe County and Alpine County.

Continued warming temperatures will increase snow melt this week, with the likelihood of flooding near some creeks and streams flowing out of the Sierra. The Walker River through the Mason Valley and Yerington is expected to reach major flood stage early this week, with record levels possible, according to the National Weather Service.

From the type of structure to season extension practices, growing in hoop houses is more complicated than field production. This workshop explores many of the variables to consider, including new technologies on the market. Learn about options for hoop house structures and season extension so that you can make the best choices for your farm. The workshop will include a producer panel discussion and tour of hoop houses at the University Main Station Farm.

Family events are the highlight of Mother's Day weekend in Carson City as the Nevada state capital adds motherhood to its continuing celebration of spring.

This weekend is for all of the moms out there, and the dads that are also moms, and the women who hold a special place of honor in our hearts. A Lakeview community project headed up by a Carson City woman is among five in Northern Nevada to receive funding awards from State Farm in support of activities aimed at reducing potential loss of life, property and natural resources to wildfire in their communities.

It’s baseball season again, so we offer some thoughts on the great 1984 movie The Natural.

Robert Redford plays Roy Hobbs, a former Nebraska farm boy who’s a fantastically great natural pitcher and hitter destined to be a major league superstar. But as he’s on his way to The Show at age 20, events take weird turns and he never gets his chance.

The Littlest things will be holding our annual tea party at the Governor's Mansion this year.

This event is one of our two annual fundraisers helping to raise funds for the animals we rescue and the farm animals in our petting zoo.

The American Tea Mistresses will be there. We have a great silent Auction planned, terrific raffle prizes, food and tea!

The Littlest Things non-profit rescues animals, holds petting zoo events teaching families how to care for farm animals, and hosts kindness events in the community.

As in elsewhere across the country, farms in Nevada are dwindling. But Carson City residents Casey and Rachel Sipe are keeping the agricultural vocation alive.

Have you ever had one of those weeks? Well, thank goodness it's Friday. Carson City will help you decompress and forget your troubles. Students, K-12 and University, will enjoy the free swim day at the Carson Hot Springs. The Carson Nugget is turning into quite the downtown hotspot with a different headlining comedian each Friday, in addition to live music in two places. Check out their newest offering, the Beer Bar, during tonight's grand opening. So much more awaits you today, you'll just have to see what strikes your fancy.

The Youth Strings Program is ready to dazzle you their Spring Fling Concert tonight at the Community Center.
