Will community gardens supplant the clubhouse? Will fairway views fade into farmscapes, and the fast-rolling greens of the golf course become rows of kale, cabbage and spinach?

The annual Third and Curry Farmer’s Market, held seasonally every summer in downtown Carson City, was recognized as one of the ten markets across the country to be featured during National Farmer’s Market Week on Saturday.

Yeah, it’s hot out there, but it’s the area happenings that are sizzling. The Carson City Fair at Fuji Park offers a plethora of entertainment for all ages including tractor pulls, a carnival, and farm animals. Under the shade of the Mills Park cottonwoods, you’ll have all day to peruse the varied vehicles in the annual Run Whatcha Brung Car Show. The sun will come out tomorrow, but it’s the stars that are coming out tonight for the free Levitt Amp Concert at the Brewery Arts Center.

A new restaurant will have their opening Friday as they are nearly ready to begin bringing farm fresh food to the Carson City community.

CARSON CITY — In collaboration with Carson Tahoe Health, The Greenhouse Project will be conducting free garden workshops throughout summer and fall at the Carson Tahoe Health Foothill Garden site to help enhance your home gardening skills.

The Winners of the 2018 Taste of Downtown fundraiser for Advocates to End Domestic Violence were announced Monday, with the Hacienda Market and Grill winning best overall.

I have long found it impossible to decide which Carson City event is my favorite: forever waffling between Nevada Day and the Taste of Downtown. Seeing as the annual parade is still months away, I’m going to side with ‘The Taste’ purely for its timeliness. With over forty local eateries participating, multiple raffles at downtown shops, and seven bands rocking every corner of the event, it’s practically impossible to have a bad time. The Brewery Arts Center in Carson City will present a performance with Comedy Improv masters Rick and Laura Hall on Sunday, July 1 in the Performance Hall at 6 p.m. This performance will also feature local players from a sold-out workshop the pair will host at the BAC earlier in the day.

We’re in for another gray day, but that won’t affect the fun to be had. Bike to Work Week always ends in a big bash. Head down to McFadden Plaza, even if you didn’t take the challenge personally. You’ll find live music, raffles, bike games, and too much fun. Western Nevada Musical Theater Company returns for another weekend of Singin’ in the Rain at the Bob Boldrick Theater. Antsy McClain and the Trailer Park Troubadours are waiting to entertain you at the Brewery Arts Center. There may be some balcony seating still available, but tickets are very limited.

Farmers, ranchers and gardeners everywhere face many of the same challenges: Weeds growing in unwanted places, critters digging holes and insects eating plants. To help producers better understand and overcome these common struggles, University of Nevada Cooperative Extension presents “Weeds, Critters and Insects in the Landscape and Garden,” May 29 at the CVIC Hall in Minden.

Carson City is in the midst of the NEA’s Big Read, with True Grit by Charles Portis at the designated book. Julie Buntin’s tome, ‘Marlena: A Novel,’ is the chosen Nevada Reads book, and Nevada Humanities has brought the author here for a discussion and reading. Find Ms. Buntin at the Nevada State Library and Archives at lunchtime or hear her thoughts at the Minden Library this evening. Keep an eye to the skies if you’re interested in today’s Muscle Powered hikes; they will walk on the indoor track at the Multi-purpose Athletic Center if it’s rainy.

I hope that everyone had a great weekend. Now it’s time to start Bike to Work Week. Set out on your commute a little earlier and do something healthy. Take some time to check out the multiple art exhibits that we have around town; Writing from Mars in the Carson City Courthouse will be gone by the end of the month. If you’d like to be more involved in our community theater activities, attend the monthly board meeting of the Proscenium Players. They always welcome an extra pair of helping hands.

Hold onto your hat, Carson City, we’re in for one heck of a weekend. It’ll be cowboy hats and pioneer bonnets in Genoa for Western Heritage Day. Keep an eye out for Mark Twain, plenty of music, and fun for all. Leis are the preferred accessory for Lei Day at the Nevada State Museum where you’ll be treated to Polynesian surprises and free admission. With three local theater groups performing this weekend, you’re sure to find a performance that’s right up your alley. Read on and be prepared to be bombarded with options.

Come join Fallon Food Hub Director, Kelli Kelly, April 25 at 6 p.m. at Cooperative Extension, 2621 Northgate Lane, to learn how to purchase farm direct produce and support local farmers. Great Basin Basket now delivers farm shares to Carson City, Minden, Fernley, Sparks and Reno.

The National Park Service (NPS) has listed the Wilhelm Lampe Ranch in Gardnerville in the National Register of Historic Places.

‘Break a leg’ to the talented kids in Wild Horse Children’s Theater. Their newest production, ‘Junie B. Jones, Jr.' opens at the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall tonight. The Reno Coin Club has returned to the Nevada State Museum for it’s annual National Coin Week celebration with lectures, demonstrations, and foreign coins for kids. It’s a BINGO kind of night. I think we are all ready for some warmer, sunny days. Western Nevada College is hosting a reception for the student artists whose work is now adorning their gallery walls, go take a gander. Nevada's rural roots will be on display for school children to see next month in Carson City with the annual Capital City Farm Days, hosted by University of Nevada Cooperative Extension 4-H.

The Nevada Board of Museums and History gave final approval Monday to list both the Wilhelm and William Lampe Ranch and the Louis and Elmer Stodieck Ranch in the Nevada State Register of Historic Places. The Nevada State Register is the State’s official list of places worthy of preservation.
