After spending his 64th birthday with his closest family, and fulfilling his wish to live to 64 years of age and force his family to sing, “When I'm 64,” to him, Ron Gonzales, known to most as Gonzo, died at 2:33 a.m. August 14, after suffering from COPD for decades. He spent his last week pleasantly, able to read for the first time in several years after suffering deteriorating eyesight – he'd received a Kindle for his birthday. His last day was spent with his granddaughter and wife, having fun with those he loved.

Jaspreet Gill, a local college math instructor and longtime teacher, turned her passion for teaching into a profession, starting her new business, Carson City Tutor, last month.

Jaspreet holds a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Nevada, Reno. She has been helping K-12 and college level students for eight years in Carson City. While working for WNC’s Academic Skills Center and other tutoring agencies, she has prepared several students for math and science competency tests, including the Nevada Proficiency Exam.

If you haven’t been to the Courthouse lately, Capital City Arts Initiative has done an incredible job of showcasing some of the unseen craftsmanship that our local manufacturers create on a regular basis. You’ll find Industrial Arts on the second floor. The arts meet engineering at the Carson City Library. Students from Harvard and MIT will be on-hand to teach kids about various STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) principles as part of the Spokes America Learning Festival.

Douglas County will host a Flood Outreach on August 6 from 3:30-7 p.m. in the CVIC Hall, Minden. The event will give the public the opportunity to collect information, provide public input, and view flood damage maps.

The seismic safety of nuclear facilities and systems will be examined in a new multi-year, multi-million dollar, federally funded project to study the influence of soil on building behavior during earthquakes. The University of Nevada, Reno’s world-renowned Structural Engineering Laboratories are at the center of the project that will first construct one of the world’s largest soil box/shake table systems, and then use it to investigate soil-structure interaction at a scale not previously possible.

The latest disaster movie, San Andreas, has drawn considerable attention, especially when coupled with the real-life earthquake disaster that struck Nepal April 25 and the magnitude 4.8 gentle-reminder earthquake 100 miles north of Las Vegas that rattled homes and highways throughout the valley on May 22.

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency Governing Board on Wednesday unanimously approved Tahoe Transportation District’s plans to realign State Route 89 access at Fanny Bridge through Tahoe City as part of a community revitalization project.

JOIN, Inc. has opened its new Carson City location at 716 N. Carson Street, Suite 108 where staff members are eager to serve residents seeking career training for in-demand occupations.

Denise Castle, Regional Branch Manager, is excited that JOIN is extending its outreach beyond Carson City to Dayton, Gardnerville, Incline Village, Minden, Silver Springs, South Lake Tahoe, Stateline, Virginia City, The Washoe Tribe, Wellington, Yerington and Zephyr Cove in order to enroll more individuals who have been without work and need re-employment skills through JOIN’s training programs.

After reviewing proposals and finalists, the Carson City Board of Supervisors and Public Works have picked Q&D Construction to serve as the Construction Manager at Risk for the Downtown Carson Street Urban Design Project, said Carson City Public Works Downtown Project Manager Danny Rotter.

Western Nevada College has announced that it will graduate 515 students for the 2014-15 academic year. The 2015 commencement ceremony will take place on Monday, May 18, 11 a.m. at the Marv Teixieira Pavilion in Mills Park, in Carson City.

The class of 2015 will receive 568 degrees and certificates.

Due to inclement weather conditions, the Friday, May 15, morning and afternoon Commencement ceremonies have been moved to Lawlor Events Center. Saturday morning ceremonies are scheduled to remain on the Quad. This is subject to change. All ceremony times remain the same.

The University of Nevada, Reno’s 2015 Spring Commencement will confer 2,454 degrees and certificates. The commencement exercises will take place in three ceremonies Friday, May 15 and Saturday, May 16 and will be held on the University’s historic Quadrangle, located on the southern part of campus. Each ceremony focuses on particular colleges and, for the first time, grant both undergraduate and graduates degrees for each of those colleges.

Miles Construction has hired mechanical engineer Jeff Rowan to add to their team of project managers. With more than 28 years of experience in the processing and construction industries, Rowan will be leading Miles’ more complex industrial projects.

Rowan holds a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa. He holds an ISO 9000 certification, considered the highest standard for quality management in the industry.

The Comstock History Center Museum in Virginia City presents a new historic photo exhibit entitled, Vanishing Icons: A Look Back at Comstock Mines and Mills.
In 1980, a documentation project was undertaken on the Comstock to record the remains of historic mine and mill sites originally built throughout Virginia City, Gold Hill, Silver City and Dayton during the late 1800s and early 1900s. The exhibit features 16 large-format, black and white photographs from this project.

University of Nevada Cooperative Extension’s 4-H Capital City Farm Days Thursday and Friday in Carson City will feature 30 presenters teaching elementary-age youth about Nevada agriculture, where food and fiber come from, and environmental issues related to agriculture.

Attendees will include public, private and home-schooled students and their families from Carson City, Storey County, Douglas County and Dayton Valley.

Continuing a winning tradition that began in 2006, the University of Nevada, Reno concrete canoe team won the regional qualifying event and is heading to the National Concrete Canoe Championship races for the 10th time in a row, to defend the school’s national championship title won last year.

The team dominated the seven northern California teams in the five race categories, paddling their 138-pound canoe, Aquatone, to win each of the races at the Mid-Pacific Regional Competition at Lake Natoma in Folsom, Calif. Friday, April 3.

The Greater Nevada Credit Union branch at CHS recently sponsored a Mural Contest open to all Carson High Students. All entries were judged and the 1st place winner was Athena Favero, who received a $200 Amazon Gift Card. Second place and a $100 Amazon Gift Card went to Michael Rose. As part of the contest, Athena painted her winning design "A Senator’s Road To Success” on the hallway wall outside the GNCU branch at CHS. Students and staff are encouraged to come by and see her winning mural at Carson High School. Congratulations to our winners, and thanks to all the students who entered.
 

It’s Veterans and Military Day at the Legislature today, complete with a display of the various services available to our Veterans set up in the front foyer. On this day in 1982, a ground-breaking ceremony was held in Washington D.C. for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Carson City has a Vietnam Veterans Memorial of its own located in Mills Park. The memorial will be the site of a Welcome Home Celebration this Saturday for Vietnam Veterans Day.

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit will host an open house to discuss Off-Highway Vehicle use on designated routes within the Lake Tahoe Basin on Thursday, April 2, 2015, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Forest Supervisor’s office at 35 College Drive, South Lake Tahoe.

The University of Nevada, Reno Police Services is planning a full-scale active assailant exercise from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, March 19.

The exercise will include agencies from across the region to test the Regional Active Assailant Response Protocol as well as the University’s Active Assailant Plan. With numerous community and regional partners participating, this drill will be the largest in the University’s history.

Friday night saw the beginning of Spring Fling Week at Carson High School with the Sadie Hawkins Dance. Thanks to everyone who came out and supported FBLA’s efforts to raise money for the March of Dimes. The next week is filled with events for student to celebrate springtime.

The University of Nevada, Reno’s College of Business announced this year’s winner of the Sontag Entrepreneurship Competition Monday, March 9. Nevada Dynamics, a hardware and software safety solution for unmanned autonomous systems, was the winner of the $50,000 award given each year to the student team who presents the best business plan.

“Sontag is one of the largest awards for a student business competition that exists at a single American university,” College of Business Dean Greg Mosier said.

We have almost made it to the weekend. Let visions of the Downtown Wine Walk, CASI’s Woof, Wine, and Whiskers, and the kick-off of Carson Comedy at the Carson Nugget keep you buoyant until then. Avatar: The Last Airbender was a groundbreaking cartoon released ten years ago. It featured an ensemble cast of characters ranging from a woman of color to a young disabled girl, all of whom were integral to the storyline and helped the hero save the day.

Come celebrate Science, technology, engineering, arts and math Thursday, March 5 at Eagle Valley Middle School with its STEM/STEAM Night 2015. See the Carson City students use STEAM in the class and learn about thethe possibilities of STEAM in college and career choices.

Just a reminder that proficiency testing is this week at CHS. Students taking the proficiency tests will begin their school day at the regular time of 7:45 a.m., while those not taking the proficiencies will start their school day at 10:30 a.m. The following tests will be given on the assigned days — March 2: Math; March 3: Reading; March 4: Writing; and March 5: Science.
