Foreclosure crisis hurts us all
Submitted by admin on Thu, 11/10/2011 - 11:46amI have a friend here in Carson City who will soon be losing her home. She's not the first, and probably not the last.
She bought her house back near the height of the boom. It's a fairly small, modest home, but fits her needs almost perfectly. At the time, her income from her sales job easily covered her mortgage and expenses. Times were good.

Fire on Old Clear Creek Road contained; Highway 50 open
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Thu, 09/08/2011 - 11:36amUpdate 1:30 p.m.: Fire crews have contained a fire that broke out this morning near Old Clear Creek Road near the top of Spooner Summit, and Highway 50 has reopened.
The fire was last reported to be about 1.5 acres in size, and there was one home in the area that was threatened. Light winds and cool temperatures helped firefighters get a handle on the blaze, with a helicopter dumping water to help out the hand crews on the ground.
The fire is about a mile from the top of Spooner Summit, along the upper portion of Old Clear Creek Road. This road has been cut off to vehicle traffic for several years, and in places has disintegrated into little more than a path. The area is used by many hikers and mountain bikers, and some people have been known to camp in the area.
Nugget Project 2.0: Possible option would negate need for increasing sales tax
Submitted by admin on Tue, 08/30/2011 - 5:35pmNow that the new Carson City Center/Nugget Project plans have answered many of the concerns of critics, one of the last big issues is the 1/8th cent increase in the sales tax to help fund the project.
But that may also be going away, replaced by fees collected from those dumping trash at the Carson City Landfill.

Exploring Carson River Canyon by raft
Submitted by Kirk Caraway on Sun, 05/22/2011 - 12:41amFloating down the Carson River in a raft on a semi-warm spring day, the beauty of blooming wildflowers dotting the canyon walls, it's easy to forget the sometimes-bad reputation this area has attained over the years.
Except for the gunfire.
State tourism and Carson City officials are anxious to show off the new Carson River Canyon, a place being transformed into a destination for whitewater adventure and sightseeing, rather than a dumping ground for homeless people and appliances.

Snow Around Carson
Submitted by on Tue, 02/22/2011 - 2:13pmWinter finally paid a visit to Carson City. After six weeks of Spring time throughout January and February, Mother nature finally decided to wake up and dump some snow on us. And it was a good size dumping too, at least 6 inches, more in some parts of town. We went to Lake Tahoe and I sunk in fresh powder up to my thigh! But it’s good to finally get some snow, even though we were getting a taste of Spring and got used to it. We’re having a few sunny days now, so all the ice can melt off the roads, but by Thursday we’re supposed to be back under the grip of another storm system. I wonder how long winter will last this year? For more photos go to aroundcarson.com.
