Donations Appreciated

They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Pair that with unlimited bowling until noon and you’ve got yourself a great Sunday. The Capital City Community Band performs at the First Presbyterian Church in its annual ‘Let the Band Play On’ concert. Show some appreciation for these talented musicians by making a donation to their group. Games aren’t just for kids, you know. It’s finally Friday, my fellow Carsonistas. Whether you are young or not as young as you used to be; single, coupled up or looking for family-friendly; introverted or extroverted, there is likely something on this list for you. Carson City offers all sorts of stuff to get you out of your home and mingling with your neighbors. I don’t know what tickles your particular fancy, so I just make sure I’ve got everything listed that I can find. It’s a living history kind of day with presentations all around. Head up to the Gold Hill Hotel for their weekly lecture series, but don’t forget to make a reservation. The Historical Society of Douglas County discusses the facts and fiction behind Lucky Bill at the Cultural Center and Museum in Gardnerville. The Nevada Division of the Pony Express Association keeps history alive and you are welcome to attend their monthly meeting at Grandma Hattie’s tonight. Pay homage to your favorite singers of yesteryear with karaoke at Living the Good Life or Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar.

It’s the first weekend of the year, and so it’s time for the downtown wine walk. The monthly tradition is a great way to meet others from around town. The mood has been somber in Carson City this week. The news of Sheriff Deputy Carl Howell’s shooting death has rallied the community, beginning with a large candlelight vigil held last Saturday at the Capitol. Today the officer will be laid to rest after a funeral service at the Reno Convention Center. A procession will leave the Carson City Courthouse at 9 a.m. and travel north along Carson Street. Various fundraisers have begun for the wife and four children that Howell leaves behind. For more information on the procession and how to donate, please go here and here.
