The Carson Nugget and Food For Thought, a Carson city nonprofit that is dedicated to feeding children in need, teamed up this fall and launched a winter coat drive that culminated Monday where dozens of children were able to pick their new jackets and parkas and enjoy a holiday brunch among friends and family.

Heading into Monday, it sure does feel like Christmas around the capital City. With only two shopping days left until Christmas be sure stop by the Carson Mall for the final days of its Holiday Craft Show. Weather wise we're looking at some valley snow showers into the afternoon and evening. Activities include a spirited discussion by local historian CW Bayer about the origins of Reno's tawdry reputation, plus Carson Cigar Company will hold its annual Ugly Sweater Christmas Party. Compared to the last six years, 2019 has the fewest holiday shopping days. This could create an unexpected problem: a reduction in the amount of charitable giving by holiday shoppers. If realized, this deficit could hinder the country’s largest social service provider’s ability to provide critical services to people in need in 2020. The vast majority of giving to The Salvation Army’s iconic Red Kettles happens after Thanksgiving.

Monday's Carson City Democratic luncheon will feature Nevada historian CW Bayer, who will talk about his new book “Reno’s Jazz Hysteria — cabaret and ballroom.” Bayer's meticulous research revealed that the origins of Nevada’s “sin industry” were rooted in Reno's scandalous “jazz hysteria,” a pop culture sensation that swept the nation beginning in the 1920s.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a mountain of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include a toy and gift drive for homeless kids and teens, the 12th annual Christmas Carol Playalong for Strings at the Carson Mall, Carson City’s first-ever "Unsilent Night" at the Brewery Arts Center, a Só Sol dinner with entertainment at Sassafras, a "Pink Party" cancer center fundraiser at the Lighthouse Bar, comedian Dan St. Paul at the Carson Comedy Club and more.

String players of all ages and levels are invited to join the 12th annual Christmas Carol Playalong on Friday, Dec. 20, 2019, from 3 to 4 p.m. inside Carson Mall, 1313 S. Carson Street, Carson City. This free event is hosted by Carson City Symphony Association and Carson Mall.

It was a cold day, but a beautiful one to have a wrapping party at Home Instead Senior Care in Carson City. We had a big turn out with volunteers who came Saturday to wrap over 400 presents for our seniors in the community.

Clouds will roll into the capital city region Tuesday keeping temperatures quite chilly. Happenings around town include organized morning and evening fitness walks, a "Stuff the Bus Toy Drive" at Capital Ford, a Planning Commission meeting on the proposed Andersen Ranch development and a Posada event at Mark Twain Elementary. Plus, the Carson City School Orchestra Program will hold its annual Holiday Concert at the community center, The Peanuts Gang Trio will hold a free holiday concert at Sassafras, and more.

The countdown to Christmas is on as we head into the first day of the work week. Events around the capital city Monday include a free yoga class offered through Partnership Carson City, the first day kickoff of a Holiday Gift Making Camp at the Brewery Arts Center, a Carson River Trails Project open house hosted by Parks, Recreation and Open Space, a Carson City Democratic luncheon featuring a Bernie Sanders campaign presentation, West Coast swing dancing at Carson Lanes and more.

More than 150 seniors in Carson City received a visit from Santa Claus and his helpers on Saturday through Friends to All, a Nevada nonprofit whose goal is "touching hearts with a visit."

December 17th will be The Salvation Army's first Angel Tree "Stuff the Bus" Toy Drive at Capital Ford in partnership with Capital Ford, Carson City School District, and KOZZ 105.7.

At Monday's Carson City Democratic luncheon, Jacob Allen will give a presentation on Bernie Sanders' presidential campaign, and will field questions from area Democrats still undecided ahead of February's precinct caucuses.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include the KTVN Share Your Christmas Food Drive at the Governor's Mansion in Carson City and at Minden's Carson Valley Inn, Homestead Holidays at the Silver Saddle Ranch and more. The Polar Express Train Rides are sold out for the rest of the year, but Santa Train express rides are steaming up at the Nevada State Railroad Museum over the weekend. Read on for details.

The holidays may be a bit brighter for some Carson City families thanks to a substantial donation from a local business. SlotWorld donated $15,000 to Holiday with a Hero, which pairs children in need with law-enforcement officials and first responders for a $100 shopping spree at Walmart.

With activities lining up around the capital city through the weekend, Thursday events around the region include a meeting of the Healthy Communities Coalition in Silver Springs, an afternoon hike hosted by Muscle Powered, and a Carson City CASA volunteer information hour and training seminar. Along the music front, CHS Band will host its winter concert at the Carson City Community Center and our own local country music star and Nashville recording artist Art Mulcahy will be at Jimmy G's. Enjoying the mix of sunshine, clouds and the overall late fall conditions around the capital city? More of the same is expected Wednesday into Thursday, with another system due in time for the weekend. Activities around Carson City include an educational discussion on dementia presented by the Alzheimer's Association at the Carson City Library, a moonlight walk to C-Hill, a "Get Fit with Fight Camp" at Yaple's Ballroom, art showings, a Carson Valley Community Theatre audition call for two plays, classes and more.

In the spirit of giving and the Christmas holidays ahead, three organizations will receive generous donations amounting to more than $500,000 in memory of Frances M. Parker, a longtime Carson City resident and former owner of the Crossroads Lounge.

It's a Holiday Treat for all and a feast of seasonal and holiday entertainment in many styles. The Carson City Symphony and Carson Chamber Singers, joined by the Victorian Dancers, present the 36th annual Holiday Treat concert this Sunday, Dec. 15 at the Bob Boldrick Theater in the Carson City Community Center.

Presented by Dharma Zephyr Insight Meditation Community, a meditation class series begins this January 2020 in Carson City. The 6-week class will introduce attendees to the practice of sitting, walking, and eating meditation, and teach participants how to bring mindfulness to everyday life.

Partly sunny skies and a daytime high in the mid-40s looks to be the order of the day around the capital city as we roll into Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2019. In December, Mondays don't really seem like Monday. At least for those of us caught up in the holiday spirit of giving and kindness. What a weekend of community fellowship this was among Carson City locals and we're just getting started, counting down the days until Christmas.

The Downtown Telegraph Square Sign was revealed on Saturday, Nov. 30. Merchants of Telegraph Square, Downtown 2020 Group, Carson City Supervisor Lori Bagwell and a small community of people gathered together to celebrate the unveiling of the Telegraph Square Sign.

The annual Empty Bowls fundraising night is underway and will continue throughout Saturday night.

Empty Bowls is an “international grassroots effort” to fight hunger around the world.

In our local community, volunteers work throughout the year to create handcrafted bowls. Each year, hundreds of bowls are crafted in Carson City for the purpose of the fundraiser.
