Former District Court Judge Michael Fondi dies

Michael Fondi, a former Nevada First District Court Judge in Carson City, died at his home this morning, according to Fitzhenry’s Funeral Home. He was 78.

Fondi had been in home hospice care when he died, said Fitzhenry’s General Manager and Funeral Director Jim Smolenski. No funeral arrangements have been made at this time and will be forthcoming.

A Carson City judge sentenced a woman to prison Monday in the December 2014 robbery of a 99-year-old woman.
Joanna Grajeda, who pled guilty to the crime of robbery, will get 3 to 10 years in prison as ordered by Carson City District Court Judge James Russell. Two others have also pled guilty and were sentenced to prison.

Former NDOT employee who misappropriated quarter million dollars sentenced

Attorney General Adam Paul Laxalt announced that Tal Pierre Smith, 56, of Fallon, Nev. was sentenced on Tuesday, Jan. 27 for fraudulent use of a state Procurement Visa Card assigned to Smith to carry out his duties as a Supply Technician.

“State employees are held to a high standard as public servants and should not abuse the trust vested in them by misappropriating public funds,” said Attorney General Laxalt. “I will continue to protect taxpayer dollars by prosecuting crooks who masquerade as public servants.”

The Associated Press is reporting that the Attorney General's Office has been granted a temporary stay that blocks Uber, a company that refers to itself as a technology business that arranges rides, from operating in Nevada.

Accountant sentenced to prison for stealing more than $100,000 from Sheriff’s Office

A Carson City District Court judge sentenced former Sheriff’s Office accountant Laura Wissert to prison Monday after she pleaded guilty to embezzlement of more than $100,000 from the department.

Laura Wissert pled guilty on two counts of embezzlement, receiving 1 to 4 years for each count, for a minimum of two years, maximum of eight ordered by District Judge Todd Russell. She was arrested in January.

An audit and the investigation was done by the Nevada Department of Public Safety Investigations Division where it was learned she stole $101,369 since 2010.

Column: Changes being weighed regarding minister housing allowances

Ministers have a special tax benefit for the amount of Housing Allowance they receive. They can exclude from gross income for income tax purposes the rental value of homes furnished by churches as part of their compensation.

This is also allowed for the portion of a retired minister’s pension that is designated as a rental allowance by the national governing body of a religious denomination having complete control over the retirement fund.

Judge issues restraining order to halt campaign ads by Nevada Senate candidate Schmidt

A Washoe County District Court Judge Friday ordered Gary Schmidt, Republican candidate for Senate District 16, to stop running an ad in his campaign advertising in which his opponent said was not true.

Judge Patrick Flanagan issued a preliminary injunction halting the broadcast of one of Schmidt’s advertisements until further hearings could be conducted on a defamation lawsuit Senator Ben Kieckhefer filed based on what he said was a false attack.

Senate District 16 covers Carson City and southern Washoe County.

Federal court strikes down Sierra Club lawsuit, upholds Lake Tahoe Regional Plan

A federal court Monday ruled in favor of the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, affirming an update to the Lake Tahoe Regional Plan that took years to craft, according to the agency.

The lawsuit was filed by the Sierra Club and Friends of the West Shore in February 2013 following nearly a decade of public input to update the plan originally adopted in 1987.

Carson City District Court Judge Jim Wilson files for re-election

Judge Jim Wilson filed for reelection as district court judge. His campaign committee includes: Roger Williams, Mary Pierczynski, Frank Flaherty, Bill Brewer, Ryan Russell, and Daniel Gonzales.

Judge Wilson was elected to the First Judicial District Court, which serves Carson City and Storey County, in 2008.
