A 20-year-old Carson City man was arrested Wednesday, 10:58 p.m. in the area of Northgate and Hot Springs Road on four misdemeanor charges: marijuana possession, driving on a suspended license, failure to stop for a stop sign and a warrant for failure to appear in court.

UPDATE: Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong said Monday the murder investigation of Grant Watkins continues and there could be additional arrests.

"The investigation has well determined that a group of young men set out to rob Watkins of approximately 3 ounces of marijuana, and in the course of the event, Watkins was killed by gunfire along-side a neighborhood park," said Furlong. "In addition to the arrests, Detectives have executed search warrants at four residences and one rural environment, as well as the crime scene area. While the Sheriff’s Office believes that the core of the offenders has already been arrested, other arrests could come later as details of lateral involvement are made clear."

A 20-year-old Dayton man was arrested in connection with the Jan. 11 murder of a Carson City man during a late night drug deal that erupted in gunfire near a subdivision park, a Carson City sheriff’s lieutenant said.

Organizers for TEDx Carson City say they have a lineup of speakers and artists who share strong passions, clear vision and strong held desires to make things happen for a greater good.

Tickets for TEDx Carson City 2016 with the theme, Creating the Community you Want to Live In, will go on sale Monday.

Organizer Gina Hill said the goal for Carson City’s TEDx is to unite listeners in a common vision of creating a community that all would want to live in. She hopes it is transformational.

A donation by the Rotary Club of Carson City will help ease the financial burden for some high school students enrolled in Western Nevada College’s Jump Start College program next fall.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office along with other law enforcement agencies throughout the state are participating in Joining Forces through the remainder of December and into the first part of January 2016. The focus will be impaired drivers.

As the holiday season approaches, participants from Carson City Parks and Recreation’s Kids Klub programs were invited to share in the giving spirit.

This past week, children from the Carson City Parks and Recreation joined the Ron Wood Family Resource Center in their yearly non-perishable food drive. Beginning on Monday, Dec. 7, participants in the Kids Klub after school programs begin bringing in their much needed donations in hopes of helping others have a happier holiday season.

The Sierra Nevada Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America celebrated six individuals, four Silver Spike awards and a number of other awards during its 2015 Silver Spikes banquet, held Thursday, Nov. 19, at the Peppermill Resort Spa Casino.

The 29th Annual Silver Spike Awards ceremony celebrated the PR and communications profession and professionals with the theme ‘Reimagine, Reinvent, Repurpose.’

Construction management instructors Bob Ford, Nigel Harrison and welding instructor Randy Naylor at Western Nevada College have played critical roles in building the sets for Western Nevada Musical Theatre Company’s production of “Mary Poppins" that runs this weekend in Carson City.

Care Flight, a program of the Regional Emergency Medical Services Authority, has named Dean Dow as its new executive director. Dow brings more than 20 years of experience in the air and ground emergency medical industry.

A 47-year-old Dayton woman was arrested Saturday in the area of Stewart and William streets on suspicion of felony DUI with a prior conviction and other charges, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Fifteen sailors from Carrier Air Wing Three of Virginia Beach, VA will be in Carson City on Saturday, Oct. 3 and Saturday, Oct. 10 to perform volunteer work at some of our most historic sites.

The sailors will be training at Fallon Naval Air Station and when in any community perform volunteer duties to “leave each place we visit in better condition,” according to Lt. Robert D Fasnacht, group leader.

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency this week announced and recognized award recipients for its 25th annual Best in the Basin program. The agency created the recognition program to showcase projects that demonstrate exceptional planning, design, and compatibility with Lake Tahoe’s environment and communities.

This fiasco surrounding John Jay High School and its football program out of Texas has me stirring. The video is pretty clear. The football players really had no reason whatsoever for that kind of action. There was no justification at all.

Here, in the richest country in the world, 15.8 million children under the age of 18 live with food insecurity. These children go to bed hungry, attend school with empty bellies, and live their lives worrying about when they will eat next.

Nevada being a 24/7 state means that at any given time the possibility exists that someone is operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated or impaired. Not everyone in Carson City works a 9 to 5 job and this in turn leads to many drinking excessively or using illicit drugs at all hours of the day and night.

John Barrette said to me: “If someone doesn’t throw stones (criticize, whatever) at me at least once a day I don’t figure I’m worth much.” Surprisingly, I do have something in common with John.

The Capitol Mall Project
This project has not been presented to me. What I have learned on my own and from the Appeal’s recent articles: It is to be privately funded and built on private property owned by a foundation/business. If this is the case, then I would support such a project.

Mayor Bob Crowell will join more than 1,800 mayors across the country for the third annual Mayors Day of Recognition for National Service, a nationwide bipartisan effort to highlight the impact of national service in tackling city problems.

It’s that time of year at Carson High School when many of our organizations and clubs are participating in state competitions. Over the next month, I will be reporting on the results of these competitions.

State History Day results: The Northern Nevada National History Day contest was held on March 14 at the University of Nevada, Reno and Carson High School sophomores produced fantastic results. All first place entries qualify to move on to the national contest.

Friday night saw the beginning of Spring Fling Week at Carson High School with the Sadie Hawkins Dance. Thanks to everyone who came out and supported FBLA’s efforts to raise money for the March of Dimes. The next week is filled with events for student to celebrate springtime.

The Carson High School Choral Program will have its Madrigal Dinner on Feb. 14 at 6 p.m. Tickets are $20 before February 1st and $25 after Feb. 1. A Madrigal Dinner or Madrigal Feast is an American form of dinner theater often held by schools.

The Carson 4-H Leader’s Council sponsored a pizza dinner prior to the ceremony. The Leader’s Council supports all of our 4-H clubs and holds events to raise funds for our scholarship program. They meet once a month to plan activities and deal with requests from clubs and the community.

Winterfest is upon us here at Carson High School. The upcoming week will be filled with activites and celebrations for the students and staff at CHS. The theme of Winterfest is WinterFlix, like Netflix. Congratulations to the Winterfest Candidates who have been nominated by their classmates. One prince and princess will be chosen by a class vote for the freshmen, sophomores and juniors. One king and queen will be chosen among the senior class. Royalty court will be announced Thursday.

Here are the latest arrests from the Carson City Sheriff’s Office from Friday through early Sunday morning. A 27-year-old Carson City man, Bradley Paul Steelmon, was arrested Friday, 2:20 p.m. in the area of 20 College Parkway on a felony warrant, insurance fraud, issued June 9, 2014 out of Tahoe Township Court.

Carson High School Culinary Arts has been named to the 2014-15 Elite 50 by the National Center for Hospitality Studies by the Sullivan University. The award recognizes an exclusive group of high schools that excel in the areas of culinary arts, baking and pastry arts.

The Instrumental Music Department, Bands and Orchestra, is having its annual Winter Holiday Concert on Wednesday, Dec. 10, 7 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center. Donations are welcome. Meanwhile, Carson High School has had a number of their singing Senators recognized for their vocal talents already this year.

Two sisters were arrested Monday at a Woodside Drive home on domestic battery charges, with one woman facing a felony charge of assault with a deadly weapon after a guitar was allegedly thrown, hitting her sister in the face and then threatening her with a knife, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.
