Outdoors with Don Q: Take time to enjoy the fall color 'quakies'

On Sunday morning, Elaine and I took a drive to Hope Valley, California to see those colors and they are spectacular. If you want to see them, do not delay — you better hurry because they are at their prime.
Doug Busey's local lake and stream fishing report
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Tue, 10/08/2013 - 3:03pmJust got back from a 1,200 mile trip up the coast and into Oregon to fish and enjoy family. Renee and I enjoyed all the rivers on the way. The Russian, Klamath, Eel, Illinois, Chetco, Smith and the Rogue. Caught a few fish and had a great time.
While in Gold beach Oregon we received over 2 inches of rain in one afternoon.

I especially enjoy the yellow-blooming sage brush before a backdrop of rolling hills, our mountains of gorgeous pines and hustling wildlife, and our nearby lakes surrounded by the changing colors of fall.
CCAI BRIC Art 4 Exhibition

CCAI will host a reception for the artists on Wednesday, October 9, from 5 - 7pm. The BRIC is located at 108 E Proctor Street, Carson City. The exhibition and reception are free and the public is cordially invited. The exhibition will remain at the BRIC through early September 2014.
Fall colors take shape near Bishop

The higher reaches of the canyon is going off right now with many areas peaking, some areas nearing peak and a few of the highest areas past peak.
As federal parks remain dim, Nevada State Parks stay open

"Autumn is awesome in Nevada's state parks for viewing fall colors, fishing, camping or setting up a hunting base camp," says Deputy Administrator Eric Johnson.

The purpose of our return visit to the mountains was to do like we had done in 2012 at this same time of the year:
October is 'Walktober' in Carson City; campaign promotes safety and fitness

On Wednesday, Oct. 9 children and their parents from around Carson City are encouraged to participate in "Walk to School Day," a coordinated celebration spearheaded by Carson City Health and Human Services and the Carson City School District. See the proclamation below.

Outdoors with Don Q: Take a Canadian vacation trip for 2014

This week, I would like to offer a suggestion for taking a 2014 vacation trip beginning in Smithers, British Columbia, traveling to Watson Lake in the Yukon and returning to Smithers.
It will basically replicate the trip we took, after our return to Smithers from staying at the Ookpik Wilderness Lodge. If you are interested and if you have the vacation time, you might want to consider a 2014 Canadian vacation trip.

On Sept. 7 you will be able to fish wherever you like without the need for a fishing license. However remember that you will need to abide by the rules and regulations that govern whatever water(s) you will be fishing.
Be sure to obey those rules and regulations, and don’t do something illegal. If you do, and if you get caught, it could be a very expensive experience.

Carson City Library summer enrichment programs bridge opportunity gap for local youth

In that time, more than 21,788 items circulated from the library’s youth collection, primarily traditional books but also e-readers like Kindles, iPads, PlayAways and PlayAway Views.

The Nevada Department of Wildlife (http://www.ndow.org) reports:
Fishing varies from day to day, with some days being good, while others being slow. Best time of day is from about 6:00 am to 10:30 am and then again after the shadows start to hit the water in late afternoon.
Best conditions seem to be with a 5 to 10 mph breeze, putting a small chop on the water.
A few fish are being taken with small dry flies, mostly yellow in color, but most of the luck is still coming with nymphs below an indicator or dry fly.

July 6 is one of two Free Fishing Days in California
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Sat, 07/06/2013 - 9:02amCalifornia has two Free Fishing Days in 2013 which are close to holidays. The first Free Fishing Day in 2013 is today, July 06 (associated with the Fourth of July) and the second is on September 07 (associated with Labor Day).
So, on Saturday, July 6, you will be able to fish wherever you like in California, without the need for a fishing license.
However, you will need to abide by the rules and regulations that govern whatever water(s) you will be fishing.

Turi Becker’s Duct Tape Wallet Program featured at Carson City Library

Hailing from Reno, NV, Turi is a cataloging librarian for the Washoe County Library System.
Have you ever heard of duct tape prom dresses? Well, we won’t be learning how to make those but we will be making duct tape smallets, or small wallets, with Turi Becker! With a variety of colors available, you can be as creative as you want with designs and pockets! This program is geared toward upper elementary and teens.
