ALMANOR LAKE, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:

Outdoors with Don Q: Take time to enjoy the fall color 'quakies'

This is my annual reminder to enjoy the spectacular displays of the colorful leaves on quaking aspen trees, also known as 'quakies' at this time of the year.

On Sunday morning, Elaine and I took a drive to Hope Valley, California to see those colors and they are spectacular. If you want to see them, do not delay — you better hurry because they are at their prime.

Doug Busey's local lake and stream fishing report

Just got back from a 1,200 mile trip up the coast and into Oregon to fish and enjoy family. Renee and I enjoyed all the rivers on the way. The Russian, Klamath, Eel, Illinois, Chetco, Smith and the Rogue. Caught a few fish and had a great time.

While in Gold beach Oregon we received over 2 inches of rain in one afternoon.

Fall Colors at Marlette Lake

Nevada is overflowing with beautiful scenery. No matter which direction you travel, you're guaranteed to come across something spectacular. I especially enjoy the yellow-blooming sage brush before a backdrop of rolling hills, our mountains of gorgeous pines and hustling wildlife, and our nearby lakes surrounded by the changing colors of fall.

As federal parks remain dim, Nevada State Parks stay open

All 23 Nevada State Parks are not affected by the government shutdown and remain open for all scheduled events.

"Autumn is awesome in Nevada's state parks for viewing fall colors, fishing, camping or setting up a hunting base camp," says Deputy Administrator Eric Johnson.

Outdoors with Don Q: Lots of fall colors and no fishing in the high country

Elaine and I just returned from a three-day, two-night, fun-filled visit to the Sierra Nevada mountains, just west of Bishop, Calif. The purpose of our return visit to the mountains was to do like we had done in 2012 at this same time of the year:

Outdoors with Don Q: Take a Canadian vacation trip for 2014

Last week, I wrote about our visit to the remote Ookpik Wilderness Lodge on Babine Lake in British Columbia.
This week, I would like to offer a suggestion for taking a 2014 vacation trip beginning in Smithers, British Columbia, traveling to Watson Lake in the Yukon and returning to Smithers.

It will basically replicate the trip we took, after our return to Smithers from staying at the Ookpik Wilderness Lodge. If you are interested and if you have the vacation time, you might want to consider a 2014 Canadian vacation trip.

On Sept. 7 you will be able to fish wherever you like without the need for a fishing license. However remember that you will need to abide by the rules and regulations that govern whatever water(s) you will be fishing.

Be sure to obey those rules and regulations, and don’t do something illegal. If you do, and if you get caught, it could be a very expensive experience.

Don Q's Fishing Report for the week of July 24

ANGEL LAKE, ELKO COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (http://www.ndow.org) reports:
Fishing varies from day to day, with some days being good, while others being slow. Best time of day is from about 6:00 am to 10:30 am and then again after the shadows start to hit the water in late afternoon.
Best conditions seem to be with a 5 to 10 mph breeze, putting a small chop on the water.
A few fish are being taken with small dry flies, mostly yellow in color, but most of the luck is still coming with nymphs below an indicator or dry fly.
