A retired United States Marine gunnery sergeant has been named Nevada Veteran of the Month by the Nevada Office of Veterans Services (NOVS).

Frank Reynolds of Carson City was selected by nomination for his work serving fellow veterans both in the community and statewide.

Dan Thielen has been named museum director of the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City, officials announced Wednesday. Thielen was curator of education at the museum for many years before he left to serve full time as an officer in the Nevada Army National Guard.

Retirement was the green light for Dayton resident Michelle O'Brien to start working again.

Once she retired after 20 years of state service with the Nevada Division of Welfare and Supportive Services, O'Brien decided she would finally have the time to devote to soap-making, a hobby that has grown into a creative endeavor.

Frances Humphrey Lecture Series presents: Historic Fishermen’s Caches from Winnemucca Lake, Nevada by Gene Hattori, PhD. The event is Thursday, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Nevada State Museum, 600 N Carson St, in Carson City.

Special Collections has a new exhibit on the third floor of the Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center, Upstart Crow: Shakespeare in Northern Nevada. This exhibit coincides with Shakespeare 400, the national commemoration of the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death. The display examines the impact of Shakespeare, both past and present, in Northern Nevada. Materials on display range from the flourishing 1800’s Virginia City Shakespearean theater scene to the modern Lake Tahoe Shakespeare festival. A high point of the exhibit is the original first through fourth folios of the Merchant of Venice.

On Wednesday, October 21, Jan Loverin, who has served as curator of the Nevada State Museum’s Marjorie Russel Clothing and Textile Center for over 30 years, will share her extensive expertise on the ‘intimate’ history of men’s and women’s underwear with the Leisure Hour Club. This event will be a perfect way to begin Nevada Day celebrations and will provide an entertaining look at a topic that is ‘never discussed in public.’

Donated to the Western Nevada College Foundation on behalf of the E.L. Cord Automotive Technology Center by Garth Richards, owner of the Silver Oak Golf Course located near the college in Carson City, the combined parts have an appraised value of $15,000.

On Wednesday, September 16, 2015, the Capital City Arts Initiative [CCAI] will present a talk by Nicole Nathan, curator at the Museum of Contemporary Craft in Portland, Oregon. Her illustrated talk, “Craft Now” is the next in CCAI’s Nevada Neighbors series. The talk will take place at 7pm at the BRIC, 108 E Proctor St, Carson City. There will be an informal reception for Ms. Nathan preceding the event at 6:15pm. The presentation and reception are free, and the public is cordially invited.

Training for anyone interested in becoming a tour guide for the Nevada State Museum, Carson City is Sept. 15, 16, 22 and 23. Volunteers make friends and meet people from around the world as they share the story of Nevada’s history and collections. Guides should be willing to volunteer at least a few hours per month to give tours for school-aged children and adults too.

Western Nevada College is making it easier to work toward a college degree and career skills. This summer, the college offers a variety of courses on campus and online, beginning Monday, June 8, through Saturday, Aug. 1.

A wide range of subjects will be available to students on the Carson City campus, including computer science, advanced mathematics, geology, biology, sign language, music, accounting, auto collision and composition, and more.

Light sculptures and constructions by Las Vegas artist Pasha Rafat will illuminate the Office eXhibition Series Gallery May 11 to July 10. A recipient of a Nevada Arts Council 2015 Artist Fellowship Grant, Rafat holds a bachelor of science in design from Arizona State University and a Master of Fine arts from California State University, Fullerton. He is a professor at University pf Nevada, Las Vegas where he teaches photography and multimedia courses. The public is invited to an exhibit reception from 5 to 7:30 p.m.

The Nevada 150 Foundation recently awarded the Nevada Indian Commission a $20,000 grant as part of the yearlong celebration’s legacy project. The grant will be used to preserve oral history surrounding the Stewart Indian School in Carson City.

On Wednesday, April 15, Brian Crane (aka “Mr. Pickles”), nationally recognized syndicated cartoonist, will speak to the Carson City Leisure Hour Club on the inspiration for his cartoon strip “Pickles.”

Mr. Crane joins the Leisure Hour Club members close to the 25th anniversary of the debut of the comic strip "Pickles" in April 1990. His comments will provide the group with a little peek behind the curtains of how he creates Pickles, how he got started, and where he gets my ideas for the nationally recognized strip.

The Capital City Arts Initiative announces its exhibition, The Driest State: Nevada Watersheds, by artist Nolan Preece at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery now through May 28, 2015. The Courthouse is located at 885 E Musser Street, Carson City. The exhibition is free and the public is cordially invited. The gallery is open to the public Monday – Friday, 8am – 5pm.
