Plan ahead now for Hot August Nights at Lake Tahoe

(PRESS RELEASE) Stateline, Nev. — Classic chrome polished cars, rock n' roll and Lake Tahoe will make for a Hot August Nights to remember, August 6-9 at MontBleu Resort Casino & Spa, the host site for one of the area’s most highly attended summer events.

The South Lake Tahoe leg of the famed Northern Nevada car show arrives at 6,225 feet elevation, with arguably the best hot rod backdrop in the world: the nation's most famous crystal cool, blue lake.

Dayton 5K Race Results Announced

Dayton’s first Healthy Communities Coalition 5K Walk/Run on May 14 attracted 50 contestants, plus 20 volunteers from Stand Tall and Dayton Task Force. The 5K fundraiser for Stand Tall’s youth leadership teams and Dayton Resource Bank resulted in $811 for the two local youth programs.

The event was a fun way for the community to exercise and to join together for two good causes. Organizers Lavurne Jeffreys and Star Erickson said they look forward to making this an annual event.

Cops and Kids Sheriff's Open House today in Carson City

Carson City Sheriff’s Office will host the 8th Annual Cops and Kids Sheriff’s Open House safety, crime and substance abuse awareness fair today from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Carson City Sheriff’s Office, 911 E. Musser Street. Cops and Kids Sheriff’s Open House was started by Sheriff Ken Furlong as part of the community policing efforts implemented by his administration.

Silver Springs Fly-In

Catch some great radio control model airplane soaring on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Silver Springs Fly-In at the Silver Springs Airport.
The High Sierra Radio Control Club plays host to the event, which will feature dozens of model airplanes in flight. Meet the pilots and learn more about radio controlled airplanes.

Carson City archery group raises $1,000 for cancer research

The Clear Creek Bowmen, an archery organization in Carson City, held its fundraising archery shoot on Sunday, May 8 and took in about $1,000 in entry fees to fight cancer. Click to the PDF below for a complete list of winners.

Officials report that there were 67 shooters that participated in the fundraiser. The donation will be made to the Carson Advocates for Cancer Care.

Silver Springs Elementary School Garden: Planting Seeds of Knowledge

Silver Springs children have a new school garden, thanks to a grant received by Healthy Communities Coalition through the USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA). In a unique partnership, Community Roots, a nonprofit part of The Healthy Communities Coalition, is partnering with SSES and SS Boys and Girls Club to develop and maintain the new garden this spring and summer.

FREE swing dance lesson

High Sierra Swing Dance Club is offering a free, two-hour lesson in basic West Coast swing at its monthly dance party May 21 at the Brewery Arts Center’s Grand Ballroom, 449 W. King St., Carson City. The free lesson is 5-7 p.m., followed by an intermediate-level West Coast swing lesson offered at 7 p.m. for $7. A social dance to practice your new skills follows from 8-10:30 p.m. Partners are not required. The social dance is $7 for members of swing clubs and $10 for nonmembers. Join the club that night, and the dance is free.

Carson City man faces felony domestic violence charges

A Carson City man faces a felony domestic battery charge after allegedly hitting his girlfriend in the face with a cup in front of their 5-year-old daughter, grabbing the woman by the throat and preventing her their from leaving the home.

Justin Thomas Keeney, 33, was arrested Thursday, April 28, in the 900 block of Saliman Road. Bail was set at $27,500.

Kiwanis of Sierra Nevada continues adoption upkeep at park

On a beautiful brisk Saturday morning, April 30, 2011, Kiwanis of Sierra Nevada members picked up trash, dog deposits and painted at Blackwell’s Pond Park. They were the first service club last year to adopt a Carson City Park.

“Our club has a positive attitude, things are always picking up,” said President elect John Ryals. “Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world, one child and one community at a time.”

Manhunt leads to capture near Lake Tahoe beach in Douglas County
