The sunny and pleasant fall weather Carson City has experienced the past couple weeks will come to an end Friday as the season’s first significant storm system moves into the region bringing wind and rain to the valleys and snow in the Sierra with the potential of lower elevation snow by Monday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

It’s Nevada Day weekend, and that means the annual parade and festivities will bombard downtown Carson City with thousands of revelers. I made the decision to put all of the parade related events into a separate list for a few reasons: one, this list would be way too long otherwise; two, Halloween fun is plentiful all weekend long; and three, I want my list to be as easy to read as possible. Firefighters battling the Slinkard Fire that started by lightning a week ago west of Topaz have reached 74 percent containment as of Tuesday morning, according to the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. The fire has burned 9,093 acres.

The Slinkard Fire burning in the Topaz area since Tuesday has grown to more than 9,000 acres as of Sunday morning with 35 percent containment, according to Bureau of Land Management Incident Command. Highway 395 remains open.

YERINGTON, Nev. — The Fort Churchill Generating Station in Nevada, which is owned and operated by Nevada-based NV Energy, has reached a safety milestone of operating 30 years without a lost-time accident.

Solar viewing glasses will be turned to the sky for Monday’s solar eclipse. A sunny summer weekend has arrived and it brings numerous fun ways to seize the day. You can always head out hiking or spend the day at the pool, but the Carson City Fair is just here until Sunday. Farm animals, great exhibits, live entertainment, a carnival, and a bull-riding rodeo can be found at Fuji Park. Park your car at the Super Walmart on Topsy and you’ll be treated to a free shuttle. Go a little bit country at the Brewery Arts Center tonight; they are bringing back the Southern Drawl Band to the Minnesota Street Stage for this week’s free concert.

A Red Flag Warning for western and northern Nevada including the Carson City and Lake Tahoe areas has been issued for Sunday by the National Weather Service due to the threat of new fire starts from dry lightning strikes.

The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for Carson City, Carson Valley, the greater Reno area and Virginia City effective Monday afternoon through Tuesday morning.
