Have you read a banned book lately? Chances are, even if it was on your high school literature class reading list, you have read a book that somebody somewhere wanted to ban.

Along with libraries across the country, the Carson City Library is celebrating Banned Books Week (Sept. 22-28) with a special event to thank authors whose work has been prohibited or challenged.

Carson City BMX is hosting a fundraiser for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation - Laps for Lungs on Friday, Sept. 13. This is separate from CCBMX racing schedule.

The laps will be done during the practice times (6-7 pm). You do not need to be a USABMX member to participate in this worthy cause. You do need to fill out a 1-day trial membership (free).

Laps for Lungs fundraiser at Carson City BMX Track (1555 Livermore Lane, Carson City) will take place Friday September 13th, 2019 from 6 - 7:30pm. There is a $5.00 donation asked for the fundraiser. (Regular Racing Fees apply for the night).

For each lap you ride during practice, a ticket will be placed into a jar for the drawing. The more laps you ride the more chances to win!

Fire season is upon us, and while the high temperatures may have come a little late this year, the wet winter and cool temperatures also created a perfect growing situation for fast acting fuels such as cheat grass.

Carson City area weather: Snow possible on valley floor Tuesday, rain showers into weekend

UPDATE 4:17PM: The National Weather Service in Reno, which had said snow levels were expected to fall to the valley floors, changed their forecast model late Monday afternoon, lessening the chances for any snow spillover to the valley floors. There's still a chance, but it is less than originally forecasted Monday morning.

The next round of storms moving into the region may actually be cold enough to bring snow showers down to the valley floors early Tuesday morning, including the Carson City and Reno areas, according to the National Weather Service.

Easterly winds of more than 20 mph in the Stagecoach Valley blew across the dry lake bed near Break-A-Heart Road and created a haboob for Churchill Estates, and the Dayton and Stagecoach areas on Thursday afternoon.

Nevada Dept. of Agriculture lifts EHV-1 horse quarantines, restricted travel recommendations

As of Wednesday, May 1, the Nevada Department of Agriculture has lifted all quarantines for Equine Herpes Virus – Type 1 (EHV-1) in the state. One positive case related to an aborted horse was confirmed in Humboldt County; no quarantine has been issued for this case because the incubation period has passed, and no horses have been moved to or from the property.
