Students and staff participated in daily activities supporting and encouraging a non-digital learning environment. Each day, five standards of Social and Emotional Learning were touched by encouraging students to power-down their phones and unplug.

The funding for this operation is provided by a Joining Forces grant.

The moisture is a welcome help to our heroic firefighters in Lake Tahoe and Washoe Valley. Because of the wet weather and the recent fires, some activities have been postponed: most notably the Advocates to End Domestic Violence’s Annual Light After Dark Run. There are still plenty of things to occupy your time, but the weather may force more cancellations.

Carson City deputies looks for distracted drivers as part of July campaign

The focus of the event will be distracted drivers. The Carson City Sheriff’s Office reminds motorists to “Keep your eyes on the road, and put away cell phones and other items that cause distractions.”

So far this year, there have been three pedestrian related fatalities in Carson City. In 2014 there was one fatality and in 2015 there was one.
City manager outlines current emergency preparedness plan

From wildfires to flooding and all-too-common high wind events, Carson City Manager Nick Marano says local government is ready to respond at a moment's notice.
"The city has an emergency operations plan," Marano said. "We've gone through several rounds of modifications to it."
There is an emergency operations center, he said, that enhances communication between public safety and public works departments during local emergencies.
John Bullis Column: Higher amount to expense on Purchase of personal property
Submitted by editor on Tue, 04/26/2016 - 10:40amIRS announced recently that it is OK for taxpayers to claim as a direct expense of up to $2,500 cost of an item of tangible personal property (i.e. cell phones, computers, equipment of all kinds).
The increase to $2,500 per item from the previous limit of $500 came mainly because many folks pointed out that $500 is less than most cell phones and computers cost. The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) was one of many advocates to ask for the increased cost.
