In light of Governor Sisolak’s announcement to close all K-12 schools in Nevada, the Nevada Department of Agriculture is implementing the first of a two-tier strategy to mitigate National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program interruptions.

The Carson City School District issued statements in English and Spanish Friday afternoon alerting the community to the suspension of all after-school activities, assemblies, concerts, practices, and general large-group gathering in response to the COVID-19 outbreak.

The statements are as follows:

Heading into the start of the work week, temperatures will be comparatively cool compared to last week with daytime highs near 55. The first Monday of March should bring clearing skies and sunshine after a weekend of wild weather. Activities include a discussion and documentary viewing regarding the high cost of pharmaceutical drugs, plus Read Across America storytime for young children at the Carson City Library, fitness events, West Coast swing dance lessons at Carson Lanes and more.

The Carson City School District is asking parents to mark their calendars for Monday, March 2, to begin registering children who will be 5-years-old by Sept. 30, 2020, and eligible for Kindergarten for the coming 2020-2021 school year.

Ever spend some time watching high school students having fun? They do it so naturally. There is no lack of excitement happening at Carson High School, and one of the more amazing aspects of this high school is everyone is invited to attend every event.

Capitol FFA traveled to North Valleys High School Feb. 1 in order to compete in the Northern FFA Zone Competition. CHS Agriculture Mechanics, Welding, and FFA Adviser and teacher Rebecca Glocknitzer said, "I know all of our students worked hard to prepare for Zone, and Mr. Mann and I are so proud of their efforts."

The next Carson City School Board meeting will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 11 in the Sierra Room of the Community Center located at 851 E. William Street beginning at 7 p.m.

Topics for discussion include proposed changes to school social workers, suicide prevention, a proposed salary increase for the superintendent and more.

Not only did the nonprofit organization Fellowship of Christian Athletes open their Christmas tree lot Nov. 24 to raise funds for their organization’s events and outreaches, they also supported other organizations and individuals by giving away 350 Angel Tree Christmas stockings and Christmas trees to Carson City children and families in need, and they also partnered with Sierra Lutheran High School to donate 75 trees to the US Marines at the Warfare Training Center in Coleville, Calif.

Christine Lenox, Ed.D., has been appointed as director of Student Support Services for the Carson City School District. She will begin her role with the district after it is announced at the next school board meeting Jan. 14, 2020.

Partly sunny skies and a daytime high in the mid-40s looks to be the order of the day around the capital city as we roll into Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2019. The Orchestra Program of the Carson City School District will hold its Holiday Concert on Tuesday, Dec. 17, 6:30 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center.

UPDATE MONDAY: Carson City School District is on a 2-hour delay, according to school officials. Principals will adjust the school schedule for the shortened day. Educators and staff should arrive at the school at least 15 minutes before school is to begin on the shortened schedule. Early Release Day schedule has been canceled. The school day will end at the normal time. Breakfast will not be served.

UPDATE: The Carson City campus of WNC, including the Child Development Center, will have a delayed start Monday. The campus will open at 11 a.m. Classes before this time are cancelled. Jump Start students taking classes at a high school should refer to the high school for closure/delay information. The Fallon campus will open at 8 a.m. No word yet on any delays for Carson City, Lyon and Storey County schools.

From the Douglas County School District website: Due to inclement weather, buses will be on a 90-minute delay on Monday, Dec. 2 for all schools, Valley and Lake.

Everyone has a disability of some kind, but most learn how to cope with or overcome it; however, not everyone with a disability is aware enough to recognize whether or not they even have a physical challenge. These individuals have a severe and profound physical and neurological disability, cannot care for themselves, need full-time assistance, and are some of the kindest human beings in the world, many of whom are students in the Carson City School District and at CHS. Each year, students in the CHS Comprehensive Life Skills program make crafts to sell at the annual CHS Craft Fair and give as gifts.

The Carson City School District will be holding its upcoming meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 26 beginning at 7 p.m. in the Sierra Room of the Community Center located at 851 E. William Street.

A discussion and possible action will be on the table for proposed capital projects as supported by the facilities master plan committee, including construction of classrooms at Eagle Valley Middle School intended to alleviate student overcrowding at Carson Middle School, in an estimated amount not to exceed $8.2 million, which will be financed by the sale of the 2019B school bonds.

Carson High and Douglas High teaming up together is right up there with the appearing of Halley’s Comet. Officially designated 1P/Halley, this is a short-period comet visible from Earth every 75–76 year and is the only known short-period comet that is visible to the naked eye from Earth and the only naked-eye comet that might appear twice in a human lifetime.

Friday Sept. 13, no bad luck on this day, beginning at 1:18 p.m. was an assembly in the Big Gym during the last class of the day as an introduction to CHS’ Happiest Homecoming on Earth. Leadership students led the assembly with the first activity being the introduction of the Homecoming King and Queen candidates who made their grand entrance onto the floor.

What a week it was Carson City, and it isn't even over yet. Heading into Friday, May 3, 2019, we're looking at continued sunny skies and temperatures in the low 70s. There's a host of activities Friday and, looking ahead, a bevy of fun Saturday including a Mother's Day craft fair at the Carson City Community Center, a Star Wars themed bicycle safety day, a wine, cheese and dessert ride aboard the V&T, an early opening of the downtown farmer's market, the May Downtown Carson City Wine Walk, a memorial walk, presentations, comedy, live music and more. Oh what a difference the sunshine makes. The second day of May in Carson City will bring warming temperatures with a daytime high in the low 70s. The event lineup Thursday includes a law enforcement memorial at the capitol complex, a hike at Clear Creek, art showings, a lecture on the historic Transcontinental Railroad, live music and more.
