Forest Service continues effort to eliminate invasive plant populations from Lake Tahoe Basin

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) will continue a project to eradicate, control, and contain known infestations of invasive plants in the Lake Tahoe Basin using chemical treatment. Work will take place at approximately 90 infestations sites (18.25 acres) beginning in mid-July and continuing through September 2017.

Hello fellow anglers, If you are planing to take an adventure to Alpine County this weekend, remember the Death Ride bicycle event is on Saturday, July 8. There will be some temporary road closures on Monitor and Ebbetts passes south of Markleeville. Yes, Ebbetts Pass is now open. Most any place you go in Alpine County this weekend there will cyclists on the road.

New July 1 law require drivers to slow and move over for NDOT vehicles working on roadsides

Current Nevada law requires drivers to slow down, proceed with caution, and if possible, move to the far lane when passing official emergency response vehicles pulled over on the side of the road with amber lights flashing. Effective Saturday, July 1, an updated law requires drivers to also do the same for Nevada Department of Transportation vehicles.

Snow and stream flows remain over many Desolation Wilderness trails above Lake Tahoe

U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit wilderness ranger scouting expeditions last week have brought back some updated trail conditions for those planning to venture into Desolation Wilderness.

UPDATE MONDAY 5:40AM: A late spring storm blasted the Sierra with snow this morning, forcing chain or snow tire requirements over Highway 50 Spooner, State Route 207 over Kingsbury Grade, State Route 431 over Mt. Rose Highway and I-80 over Donner Pass. Go here for an update on area road conditions related to the storm. The National Weather Service forecast calls for the skies to be clearing by tonight with a gradual warming trend this week.

Firefighters get handle on Topaz, two other fires, Highway 395 reopens

UPDATE 955PM: From Douglas County: The Topaz Fire is in mop up status at the present time. The fire burned 8 acres within the Topaz Subdivision just south of the Topaz Lodge in Southern Douglas County.
Highway 395 was closed during initial fire attack operations. The highway is now open but motorist are urged to proceed with caution through the area. One out building was damaged in the fire and no structures were lost. Approximately 30 to 40 homes were threatened at one time. Volunteer evacuations are still in place.

Carson City Fire Department: Use Caution Near the Water’s Edge

Visitors and residents should be very careful on the riverbanks and along streams. Almost every year Carson City responders are involved in a swift water rescue. If you see someone fall into the river do not attempt to swim after them please call 911. Typically a current less than 5 mph is enough to lose control and be swept away.

Carson City firefighters called to help fight brush fire in Silver Springs

UPDATE: A brush fire and possible structure fire is burning Thursday afternoon in the area of Idaho and Citrus streets in Silver Springs, prompting a mutual aid call from Lyon County to surrounding agencies, including Carson City.

Forest visitors can enjoy biking, camping, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, picnicking and many more recreations activities this summer.

Hello fellow anglers, we have one week to go to the California opening day of trout fishing season. On April 29, 2017 the lakes and steams in Inyo, Mono and Alpine counties will open for fishing. On a special note, the rivers leading into Lake Tahoe do not open until July 1, 2017.

The Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space Department would like to advise all users of the Ash Canyon area and the Marlette-Hobart Backcountry of Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park that Ash Canyon Road is likely to remain closed throughout 2017.
