Sunday, July 5: Things to do around Carson City

The weekend isn’t over yet. Enjoy breakfast at the Elk’s Club. They serve up pancakes and more every first Sunday. Genoa is a great place to spend a leisurely afternoon. Sweet Sippin Sunday is like a mini wine walk, only this month the small businesses are serving up rum-based cocktails. Help keep Tahoe blue: the annual beach clean-up after the Fourth of July needs all the help it can get.

SUNDAY:

  • First Sunday Breakfast at the Elks Club: 515 N Nevada (bar opens 7am; 8:30am-11am, $7)
  • Fourth of July Specials at Empire Ranch Golf Course ($34 includes 18 holes, cart, and lunch)

Happy birthday, America! Today we celebrate our independence, and what better way than with a carnival. You might as well stay at Mills Park all day, the fireworks display starts when it gets dark. Tune into Magic 95.5FM and you’ll hear the choreographed music to go along with the oohs and aaahs. Where ever you choose to watch fireworks, please be safe. There are thousands of visitors in the Northern Nevada area this weekend, and law enforcement will be out in full force.

SATURDAY: Independence Day

  • Free Swim for Active and Retired Military at the Carson Hot Springs (7am-10pm; outdoor pools only)
  • Freedom 5K Fun Run/Walk and Concert in the Park with the Carson Valley Pops Orchestra at Heritage Park, Gardnerville (5K, $20 per person and family rates, free for active/retired military; register 7am-7:45am; Run/Walk begins 8am, Patriotic costumes encouraged; 8am Carson Valley Lions Club Pancake Breakfast $7; Free Kids Obstacle Course 8am; Free Concert begins 11:30am)

Column: Deep Thoughts, Cheap Shots and Bonbons

In the movie Dances with Wolves there is a line, one of the characters says, and it goes something like this: “Somebody back east is saying, why don’t he write?”
Many of you might be wondering the same thing about me. Why I haven’t written for a spell? I could list numerous reasons, some might be worth mentioning, and others would be insignificant.

In simple true-to-life terminology — I’m back. A few of the hot topics from the June 18th Board of Supervisor meeting.

First things first. Saturday afternoon could be expecting some wet weather, so be prepared. I can’t predict what events may be affected by it, or if the rain will even show up. No worries for you wine walkers, though, downtown will be hopping: rain, shine, or blizzard. Head over to Artsy Fartsy Art Gallery and wish them a happy fourth anniversary, Jeffery will be serving up one of his signature Sangrias. St. Peter’s Episcopal Church won best wine walk stop last month and will have live music. Don’t forget to spend some time inside Westside Pour House: ARTistically INKlined pop-up gallery returns and proves that tattoo artists are first, and foremost, artists.

SATURDAY:

  • Street Vibrations Spring Rally: Downtown Reno
  • Reno Tahoe International Film Festival – go to www.RTIFF.org for schedule and locations
  • Sierra Lutheran High School's 13th Annual Golf Classic at the Silver Oaks Golf Course (7am Check-in, Shotgun start at 8am; $125 for a single player or $400 for a team of four)

Tuesdays are known for two guided walks, but I recommend checking the Carson City Parks and Recreation Department’s Facebook page here, or Muscle Powered’s Facebook page here before you go. Not affected by the weather, the Carson High School Musical Theater Performance and Band Concert at the Bob Boldrick Theater this evening. Tuesday, March 17: Things to do in Carson City on St. Patrick's Day

    Event Date:
    March 17, 2015 (All day)

Every year on March 17, the Irish and the Irish-at-heart across the globe observe St. Patrick’s Day. What began as a religious feast day for the patron saint of Ireland has become an international festival celebrating Irish culture with parades, dancing, special foods and a whole lot of green. Carson City definitely gets in on the game with festivities all over town. Corned beef and cabbage, green beer, and live music abound. I've included a short YouTube video of Tom and Mary Kay Aufrance who will be performing at Red's this evening.

May the Irish hills caress you.

Nevada Humane Society director Kevin Ryan to provide insight into new animal shelter

    February 25, 2015 - 11:30am

It’s been a long time coming, but the building of a new, state-of-the-art multi-million dollar animal shelter will become a reality within a year. Ground breaking is expected in March.

The new shelter will be funded through bonding resulting from the 1/8 cent sales tax increase that took place on October 1, 2015 with additional funds raised by CASI — Carson Animal Services Initiative — the organization pledging $200,000 to be used as a community “donation.”

    Thank You from CASI!

Carson Animal Services Initiative (CASI) would like to thank the Stemler Family and the employees of the State of Nevada Dept. of Conservation and Natural Resources for their recent donations.

CASI is an all volunteer 501(c)3 dedicated to helping Carson City build a new animal shelter...a place where animals in need can be safe until they find their forever homes, and where people feel comfortable visiting.
