Robert Burke Presents 'The Mountain Man' at Feb. 17 Carson City Leisure Hour Club

Members of the Carson City Leisure Hour Club will hear about the exploits of 'The Mountain Man' at their dinner meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 17. The session will be presented by retired California State Park Ranger, Robert Burke.

A California State Park Ranger for more than 30 years, Burke will present a session on the story of "The Mountain Man." Guests will find out who the mountain man was; why he went to the mountains, when he went into the mountains and how he survived.

Larry Elliott to Ring in the Holidays for the Leisure Hour Club

Practice those newly learned dance moves at Living the Good Life: DJ Bobby G is featuring Latin music. Sing to your heart’s content at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar or at the Feisty Goat Pub: it’s karaoke night.

History and Future of Stewart Indian School Explored

On Wednesday, May 20, Sherry Rupert, Executive Director of the State of Nevada Indian Commission, will speak in the Carson Nugget Ballroom to the Carson City Leisure Hour Club. Ms. Rupert will review the history of the Stewart Indian School and share insights into future plans for the historic site.

'Mr. Pickles' Presents to Carson City Leisure Hour Club

On Wednesday, April 15, Brian Crane (aka “Mr. Pickles”), nationally recognized syndicated cartoonist, will speak to the Carson City Leisure Hour Club on the inspiration for his cartoon strip “Pickles.”

Mr. Crane joins the Leisure Hour Club members close to the 25th anniversary of the debut of the comic strip "Pickles" in April 1990. His comments will provide the group with a little peek behind the curtains of how he creates Pickles, how he got started, and where he gets my ideas for the nationally recognized strip.

Allen Rowe Presents to Leisure Hour Club

On Wednesday, March 18, Allen Rowe, owner of Northern Nevada Coin and Bullion will speak to the Carson City Leisure Hour Club on a variety of topics related to his involvement in the coin and precious metals profession. RSVP by March 12.
Mr. Rowe has been interested in coins since about the age of ten. Spending paper route money on coins was his favorite pass-time at that age. After graduating high school, he continued his education at the University of Nevada Reno where he earned a degree in medical sciences.

He's delighted audiences in person on stage all over the country from San Francisco and Los Angeles to New York, in addition is a regular on “Days of Our Lives” TV show and in the Oscar-nominated movie “The Cooler” among his credits.

Celebrating 118 years, Carson City Leisure Hour Club hosts Basque specialist

The Carson City Leisure Hour Club begins its 118th year with a presentation by Iker Saitua, a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Nevada, Reno. Born in Algorta, Basque Country, Iker will discuss Basque history in a presentation titled Becoming Basque-American: Basque Sheep Breeders and their Ethnic Legitimacy in Nevada (1890-1959).

The Leisure Hour Club, established in September of 1896, is Carson City’s oldest continuously operating social organization. Its goal is promoting knowledge on important issues, science, music and literature.

Antonucci, author, historian and regional expert on Lake Tahoe, Mark Twain, and the Olympic Games at the Lake, will speak on “Fairest Picture – Mark Twain at Lake Tahoe”, the first and only book devoted solely to chronicling Mark Twain’s experiences in the Lake Tahoe region to the Carson City Leisure Hour Club on Wednesday, May 21.
