Thousands attend Carson City Rendezvous; event continues through Sunday

With enough cannon fire, frontier food and Wild West living history to pack a weekend's worth of activities, the 28th annual Carson City Rendezvous continues today, tonight and through Sunday at Mills Park in Carson City.

The Carson City Rendezvous is noted for portraying the lifestyle of early Nevada settlers, with a host of gun skirmishes, mountain man encampments and trapping demonstrations. This year the main demonstration of the Civil War-era gun battles has been moved from afternoon to dusk to better capture the backdrop of live-fire, rounds shot from muskets and cannons.

Carson City Rendezvous celebrates Wild West history, Civil War-era living

The 28th annual Carson City Rendezvous, the area’s largest special event, returns Friday through Sunday to celebrate the wild west and Civil War era history.

The 150th anniversary of President Abraham Lincoln's presidential inauguration is just one of many new events for the free three-day Civil War-era living history set at Mills Park, according to a news release issued by the Carson City Visitors Bureau.

The opening ceremony will be a special re-enactment of the inauguration of Abraham Lincoln, the nation’s 16th president, at Mills Park on Saturday at 10 a.m.

Eclectic to historical events mark Carson City summer calendar

Carson City's history, arts and culture will be featured throughout the summer with a litany of events and activities to resonate with families and their budgets, according to the Carson City Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Getting in the Mood: The Commanders Jazz Ensemble

Mile High Jazz Band Association and Carson High Jazz Band present a free concert by The Commanders Jazz Ensemble from the US Air Force Band of the Golden West. The concert is a preliminary event to the "Jazz! Carson City" music festival, which will feature over 45 free music events this coming August.

Carson City Convention and Visitors Bureau nets $14K in state tourism grants

The Carson City Convention and Visitors Bureau was awarded $14,000 in grants last week from the Nevada Commission on Tourism for three different marketing efforts, providing support for the destination’s Divine Nine Golf Co-operative, its own website and video production and advertising materials for the Virginia & Truckee Railway.

Carson City Chamber holiday party filled with good cheer

It was a party made with plenty of good cheer, chili, hot cider and lots of ice skating as the Carson City Chamber of Commerce rang in the Christmas spirit tonight with its annual holiday party at Arlington Square Ice Rink.
The party featured a medley of holiday songs performed by the Carson High Capital Stars. Festivities inside the heated pavilion included great conversation among chamber members and city, state and school representatives, hot food, cocoa and cider compliments of Grandma Hattie's and cookies compliments of the Carson Nugget.

Railroad Museum in Carson City on the state budget hit list

Under a proposed state budget plan, four of Nevada's museums operated by the Division of Museums and History would close, including the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City, said Peter Barton, acting administrator for the Division of Museums and History.

Other museums on the proposed state budget chopping block are the Nevada Historical Society in Reno, the state's oldest museum which opened in 1905; the Lost City Museum in Overton; and the Nevada Northern Railway Passenger and Freight Depot in East Ely.

Carson City Silver Dollar Car Classic continues through Sunday

Hundreds of car enthusiasts from Nevada and California made their way to Mills Park in Carson City today for the annual Carson City Silver Dollar Car Classic.
The car show, which continues through Sunday, is among the region's biggest draws, with more than 300 restored, tricked-out, and souped-up cars and trucks on display.
Saturday's ideal weather conditions and the tree coverage of Mills Park made it a great event for the entire family, organizers said.

A Rail of a Good Time: Virginia & Truckee Railroad opens season with great deals

The Virginia & Truckee Railroad opened its 2010 season with completely booked train rides over Memorial Day weekend. As if channeling the “Little Engine that Could,” the historic railway started right where it left off last year with overwhelming public support. After a sold-out season in 2009, the V&T has expanded operations to Friday through Sunday rides, now through Oct. 31.
The strong beginning to the V&T’s summer operations has tourism officials hopeful the trend sticks.

Families enjoy holiday weekend on V&T, steam trains between Carson City and Virginia City

Back on the tracks again, the V&T Railroad kicked off Saturday with a near-sold out day, ample sunshine and a promising full-steam-ahead summer.
"We had a couple of seats left, with quite a few tickets sold for tomorrow," said Candy Duncan, executive director of the Carson City Convention and Visitors Bureau. "Today went very smoothly and everyone was excited about going on that first ride of the season."
