Nevada Day Parade through Carson City

The Nevada Day Parade in downtown Carson City drew tens of thousands to Carson Street today to watch and celebrate the Silver State's statehood.
Parade-goers were treated this morning with an air show above the Carson City skies, including the traditional F18 Hornet fly-over.

Nevada celebrates its statehood in annual flight of fancy down Carson Street

Nevada Day kicks off this morning with annual the Nevada Day Parade, with the theme being "100 Years of Aviation" to go along with the Silver State’s admission to the Union in 1864.

Retired Lt. Col. Dick Rutan of the U.S. Air Force serves as Grand Marshal for today's celebration. He was picked to coincide with the theme, which marks a history-making flight of daredevil pilot William Ivy Baldwin west of Carson City, where he soared to 4,675 feet, the highest ever at that time.
 

Carson City Arts and Culture Coalition Candidate Night

The Carson City Arts and Culture Coalition is sponsoring a forum for local candidates running for office on Tuesday, Oct. 19 at 6 p.m. in the Sierra Room of the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William St. The forum is free and open to the public.

Carson City Symphony presents Halloween and Harmonicas

The Carson City Symphony, conducted by David Bugli, leads into Nevada Day with a special concert, Halloween and Harmonicas, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center.

Carson City school board to take up employment status of teacher who made alleged threat

A closed session meeting to discuss the employment status of a middle school teacher is on tonight's Carson City School District board agenda.
Discussion and possible action could be taken in terminating the probationary employment of Wayne Haack, according to the agenda.
In November, Haack, an Eagle Valley Middle School shop teacher, was arrested after allegedly making a threat to a school district employee.

Carson City road report through Sunday, Sept. 19

Here is the Carson City road construction report for today through Sunday, Sept. 19.

Koontz Lane continues to be closed between Raglan Circle and Edmonds Drive until January 2011 because of work on the next phase of the Nevada Department of Transportation freeway project.

Russell Way will be closed between Long Street and Northridge Drive from Monday, through Friday, Sept. 17 because of to utility work. Meanwhile, Curry Street will be closed between 6th and 7th Streets on Tuesday and Wednesday because of utility work.

Road report for Sept. 6 - 12

As a result of the next phase of the NDOT project on the freeway, Koontz Lane will be closed between Raglan Circle and Edmonds Drive until January 2011.

There will be lane closures on Carson Street during daytime hours near the intersection of Silver Oak Drive as improvements will be made to that intersection. Minor delays are expected.

The Roop Street widening project is continuing and is expected to be completed by the end of 2010. The following impacts are expected this week:

As summer winds down, Carson City road construction crews continue on with local projects. Here are the ongoing improvements planned for Monday through Sept. 5. As always, expect minor delays and give crews a wave and a "brake" in construction zones.

Carson City planners to review proposed sign plans at Carson Mall

A plan to put up some new signs to spruce up a revitalized and remodeled Carson Mall is on the Carson City Planning Commission agenda on Wednesday.
The Carrington Company, which owns the mall, is asking the city to allow for more signs on the front and back ends of the mall, at the 1313 South Carson Street and the 1457 South Carson Street entrances.

Summer road construction projects continue this week in Carson City as the Nevada Department of Transportation, contractors and city crews continue work throughout the region.

Here is the Carson City road construction report through Aug. 22. As always, expect some delays in the project areas, be courteous and give crews "a brake" in the designated road construction zones.

With the continuing Nevada Department of Transportation project at the Carson City freeway, the following closures are planned:
— Valley View Drive has been permanently closed between Edmonds Drive and Line Drive.

Clear Creek Road closing to the public

The Nevada Appeal has a story about the residents of Clear Creek Road putting up a gate to shut out public access.

This has been a long-simmering issue. You can't really blame the residents, who are trying to protect themselves from liability if someone gets hurt on this private road, which provides access to popular hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing and picnic areas.

The Carson City School District Board of Trustees will meet at 7 p.m. tonight in the Sierra Room of the Carson City Community Center, 851 East William Street. (Catch the live video here)

 The Roop Street widening project will continue and is expected to be completed by the end of of the year. The following impacts are expected for the Carson City area in the coming week:

— Roop Street is closed to through traffic from William Street to Robinson Street.  This closure is expected to last through early September, but business access will be provided.

Policy reviews, home education sports waiver on tap for Carson City school board

A proposal to refund outstanding bond debt, plus a review of policies involving co-curricular and interscholastic activities will round out the Carson City School District board meeting on Tuesday.
The meeting begins at 7 p.m. in the Sierra Room of the Carson City Community Center, 851 East William St. The meeting will be televised live on Access Carson City TV and here at Carson Now.

Nugget Project developers present three visions of new downtown Carson City

The chosen developer of the Carson City Center, also known as the Nugget Project, presented three different options of what the project might look like tonight at the Carson City Community Center. (See the play-by-play notes here.)
The plans presented were best-case scenarios, since the feasibility studies are not yet complete.
The plans all had the same basic pieces that included the library/discovery center, office buildings, retail space and a parking garage.
