Sunday, August 30: Things to do around Carson City

Are you off to the playa? If not, head over to the Carson City Airport for their display of vintage aircraft celebrating the end of WWII. If land-based vehicles are your passion, then the Ferrari Hill Climb along the truck route to Virginia City could be for you. If the Ferraris are too fast, maybe you’d enjoy watching or racing with Carson City BMX at the Livermore Sports Complex off Edmonds Street. For something without wheels, consider the weekly pool tournament at Remedy’s on William Street.

This last weekend of August is filled with ways to celebrate your community. Carson Animal Shelter Initiative, better known as CASI, hosts their annual Bark, Whine, and Dine Fundraiser at Fuji Park. Animal lovers can also head to Carson Catalina Apartments for a rummage sale that benefits the Carson Tahoe SPCA. The Carson City Sheriff's Office young Explorers will host a fundraising car wash; The Marine Corp League can be found at the north Carson Walmart; half of the donations received will go to Deputy Howell’s family fund. And don’t miss out on the drought-friendly water balloon ice bucket challenge raising funds for ALS at Butler Meats on Sunday.

Cactus Airforce: WWII Celebration and Rememberance

You are cordially invited to the Cactus Air Force hangar (2600 College Parkway, hangar: 33, 89706) to celebrate the end of World War II. This event will be located at the Carson City Airport on August 30th beginning at 8am until 3pm. There will be many vintage World War II vehicles and aircraft. The highlight of the day will be a TBM Avenger flight at 12 o’clock noon to commemorate the brave men and women of our armed services; both present and past.

Vintage aircraft at Carson City Airport Sunday to mark end of WWII

The Carson City Airport will have a number of vintage airplanes on display this Sunday, Aug. 30 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. for an event to celebrate the end of World War II.

Cactus Air Force Wings and Wheels Museum will have several pieces of vintage aircraft at the airport. The community is invited to this free event to mark the 70th anniversary of the end to World War II. Among the aircraft is a WWII era TBM avenger fly as well as plenty of other planes and vehicles from both WWII as well as Vietnam.

I hope you’re hungry, Carson City. Hungry and adventurous. The annual Chili Cook-off and Craft Fair hits Glen Eagles this weekend, and there will be plenty to sample. If you need something cold to drink, head to 7-ELEVEN for a free small slushee from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. in celebration of Seven Eleven Day. The Farmers Market is always a good bet on Saturday mornings for sampling all the yummy stuff that grows nearby.

Flash Flood Warning for Carson City, strong thunderstorm develops south of Dayton

The Flash Flood Warning for the Carson City and Dayton areas has expired. A Flash Flood Watch remains in effect until 9 p.m. tonight.

A Flash Flood Warning is in effect until 4 p.m. for Carson City, north central Douglas County and Lyon County. This includes Dayton, Johnson Lane, Indian Hills, the Carson City Airport, Stewart Indian School, Highway 50 through Carson City and Dayton, Rawe Peak and Dayton Valley Airpark, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

Motorcycle crashes, rider injured at College Parkway and Airport Road

Carson City emergency crews were called this morning to a motorcycle crash near the intersection of College Parkway and Airport Road. A medical helicopter was also dispatched. The crash happened at around 9:40 a.m.

U.S. Marine helicopter training begins in late July at Lake Tahoe Airport

The U.S. Marine Corps will be in South Lake Tahoe on a 13-day training mission July 27 through Aug. 8. The Marine Light Attack Helicopter Training Squadron 303 is based out of Camp Pendleton, Calif. Squadron 303 trains all of the future pilots for the Marine Corps Cobra and Huey fleets.

The training will include day and night flights of multiple aircraft between Lake Tahoe Airport, Minden-Tahoe Airport and Carson City Airport.

The Carson City Airport Hosts Annual Open House displaying aircrafts and other activities

Airplane owners, their aircrafts, old cars and motocycles, pilots, sponsors, vendors and guests of all ages can be found at the Carson City Airport grounds today, Saturday, for the airport's annual open house.

Planes will take to the skies through 4 p.m. The event is free and guests can can participate in interactive activities and magnificent displays the open house offers.

A Deja vu Airplane Ride over Carson City

An event at the Carson City Airport had my blood running faster than usual Sunday! An old Ford Tri-Motor plane came by to visit. This plane has an interesting history with a personal touch for my family. My son-in-law Glenn Ware, grew up in Kansas where this plane was first based, and he took a ride in it when he was 15 years old. He has pictures of it in his scrapbook.

‘Tin Goose’ Ford Tri-Motor Tours this weekend at the Carson City Airport

Carson City Airport Announces 2015 Open House Event

With hopes of generating enthusiasm among young people and using themes of robotics, aviation and aerospace to do it, Carson City Airport's annual open house returns to the skies above the capital city on Saturday, June 20, after a year hiatus.

More than 6,000 visitors attended the event in 2013. This year’s open house, which runs from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m., is free to the public. Activities will feature interactive displays, flybys, plane and helicopter demonstrations, robotics demonstrations, food and beverages, bounce house and many more family activities.

Carson City rescue crews respond to multi-vehicle crash at Fairview and Saliman

Carson City fire and ambulance have been called to an injury accident at the intersection of Fairview and Saliman Road. The accident involves at least three vehicles, according to dispatch and was reported just after 2 p.m. One person was reportedly injured and is being taken to the hospital. The injuries do not appear to be life threatening.

Accident at Highway 50 and Airport Road ties up traffic, at least one injured

UPDATE: Traffic along westbound Highway 50 is now moving following an accident there earlier this morning with at least one injured. The accident happened shortly before 8:30 a.m.
One person was taken by ambulance to the Carson City Airport and flown via Care Flight to the trauma ward at Renown Medical Center in Reno.

UPDATE 11:30PM: A 17-year-old teenage male was flown to Renown Medical Center in Reno late Saturday night after being struck by a vehicle at the intersection crosswalk of Lompa Lane and Highway 50, a Carson City Sheriff's Office sergeant said.
As of 11:30 p.m., one travel lane was open on Highway 50 for through-traffic as Nevada Highway Patrol troopers determine the cause of the accident, said Sgt. Scott McDaniel.

Care Flight to respond to motorcycle crash involving car at Fairview and Sweetwater

Care Flight was called and Carson City fire and ambulance responded this morning to a motorcycle accident at the intersection of Fairview and Sweetwater.
The crash was reported at around 8:45 a.m. Initial reports are the motorcyclist had serious injuries, was conscious but with labored breathing and that he could not feel his legs.
The Carson City Sheriff's Office responded to redirect traffic around the accident and to investigate.
