There is an interesting discussion going on over at the Nevada Appeal site concerning the Nugget Project.

The story begins two week ago when Guy Farmer wrote a rather harsh column that slammed the Nugget Project. In response, last week there was a guest column by Michael Douglass criticizing Farmer's take on the subject.

Saturday, Oct. 16 has been designated Carson City Community Flu Vaccination Day, with vaccines offered to the community at no cost.

It is the seventh year for the program, and by all measures it keeps on growing and has been tremendously successful, health officials said at a press conference this morning.

Last year, there were 8,000 seasonal flu shots given and 21,000 H1N1 shots administered, health officials said.

The September/October issue of VIA Magazine put out by AAA has a wonderful cover story on Trains in the West and features, among 11 iron horses, the Virginia and Truckee Railroad.

If you have taken part in the events going on in downtown Carson City this summer — such as the Friday night concerts on 3rd Street or the farmer’s market on Saturday mornings — then you have witnessed the Curry Street Promenade in action.

Though most would agree that the events are a great benefit for our downtown, the process by which this project came about is a strange one, tainted with managerial missteps, missing budgets and political indifference.

The final games of pool were being played today at Doppelgangers Brewery and Tap Room in Carson City, with the winners being Carson City community organizations.

It was a glorious time in the spirit of Old Glory. Carson City Mayor Robert Crowell welcomed the United States Air Force Band of the Golden West to Carson City Wednesday night.
The performance held at the Bob Boldrick Community Center was a solid smash and delighted the mostly senior audience, many of whom served in the military. The last time the full band was in Carson City was in the fall of 2006.

I sent an email to all of the members of the Carson City Board of Supervisors for their reaction to the initiative petition filed on Friday to put the Nugget Project to a vote in 2012.

We now have responses from the four supervisors, and I just added Mayor Bob Crowell's comment below.

The Carson City Chamber of Commerce, in cooperation with the Carson City Parks and Recreation Department, is pleased to announce the return of the United States Air Force Band of the Golden West to entertain our citizens.
The free concert will be held on Wednesday, June 9 at 7:30 p.m. at the Bob Boldrick Community Center. Mayor Bob Crowell, a Navy Captain and veteran, will introduce Major Keith Bland, Commander of the band.

The Nevada Appeal has uncovered a few new tidbits about Nugget Project consultant Mark Lewis.

Following the piece I wrote on Lewis this week, the Appeal found a grand jury report dealing with Lewis' big project developments as city manager of Stockton, Calif. The report showed that costs associated with development of the the Stockton ballpark and events center swelled from an estimate of $75 million to more than $120 million, and placed the blame for this on Lewis and the lack of oversight by the city's elected officials.

The Carson City Shade Tree Council will be hosting its annual Arbor Day Celebration on April 30, 2010. The celebration will be held in the park across from the State Library on the corner of Stewart and Musser Streets and will begin at 5:30 p.m. and is scheduled to last an hour.

The effort to reconstruct the historic Virginia & Truckee Railroad is receiving a boost from NV Energy with a $100,000 grant to the Northern Nevada Railway Foundation, the fund-raising arm of the Nevada Commission for the Reconstruction of the V&T Railway.

In what may be the most difficult meeting of their careers, Carson City Supervisors next week will balance the 2010-11 city budget with significant cuts in city services including layoffs. Those layoffs, if approved, will occur in many departments, but the more noticeable will be in the Sheriff and Fire Departments.

One of the first questions I heard raised about the Nugget redevelopment project had to do with who would own the land.

Some people have the false impression that the Carson Nugget is donating the land to the city.

As it has been proposed, the new library, public plaza and other pieces paid for by the city would be sitting on land owned by the foundation created by Nugget President Steve Neighbors, in accordance with the wishes of late owner Mae Adams.

An article in the Nevada Appeal this morning attempts to get new information from the Nugget Project’s “go to guy,” Steve Neighbors. Neighbors, who is now the owner of the Nugget, is quoted as saying that the project still lacks a developer to shoulder the “private industry” half of the project. That’s about all that’s new from Neighbors, that they STILL don’t have a private partner.
