It’s National Say Something Nice Day which can be a little difficult on a Monday, but the sun is shining, June has begun, and the Legislature is on its final day: I’m sure you can find something. Head out to the Minden-Tahoe Airport and check out the WWII-era planes on display as part of the Wings of Freedom tour. Or enjoy some time with your shoes off in one of Carson City’s many parks: it’s also National Go Barefoot Day.

Carson High School Theater invites you to enjoy a performance of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing at the Capitol Amphitheater, or soak up some sun on an afternoon hike with Muscle Powered.

May 19 is designated as ‘May Ray Day,’ a day to soak up some sun, enjoy the light. I’m not even going to pretend I know what the weather is doing, so you may just need to Google some sunny images. Tuesdays are known for two guided walks, but I recommend checking the Carson City Parks and Recreation Department’s Facebook page here, or Muscle Powered’s Facebook page here before you go. Not affected by the weather, the Carson High School Musical Theater Performance and Band Concert at the Bob Boldrick Theater this evening. Go support our talented kids one last time before the school year ends.

It’s a good weekend for the arts. Consort Canzona presents a free concert on Sunday: “Madrigals and Dances: A Celebration of Renaissance Music.” The ‘Music Man’ wraps up its successful run at the Community Center. The Capital City Community Band performs old favorites at Western Nevada College. And you won’t want to miss the Zephyrus Brass Quintet on the Dangberg Ranch lawn.

SUNDAY:

Bundle up, Carson City. We aren’t afraid of a little wind, are we? The Dangberg Home Historic Ranch is celebrating our infamous Washoe Zephyr this weekend with kite making, demonstrations, and more. The Friends of the Silver Saddle Ranch would love to see you at their open house on Saturday; if you’re an early riser, join them on a 7 a.m. bird walk. The Carson City Sheriff’s Office is hosting their annual Cops and Kids Open House, so head to the courthouse for some fun.

The first Tuesday of every month belongs to the Carson City Classic Cinema Club. Every month they meet for a classic movie, trivia and discussion. Join them at Red’s Old 395 for The Big Trees with Kirk Douglas. Few performers are more classic than the Three Stooges: on this day in 1934 the released their first short film, Women Haters.

Time to wine walk, Carson City, thanks to the Downtown Business Association. Saturday, May 2, the festivities begin at 1 p.m. Grab a wine glass, map, and hand stamp at the Carson Nugget, Cactus Jack’s, Carson Jewelry and Loan, Touched by an Angel, or Bella Fiore. You have until 5 p.m. to hit as many stops as possible before the raffle begins.

Tuesdays are an excellent day for a stroll. Carson City Parks and Recreation and Muscle Powered both offer a guided walk/hike along one of our valley’s many trails. This morning enjoy beautiful views from the Virginia and Truckee Trail on the west side of Carson; it is also an excellent trail for biking. Later today, tag along with Muscle Powered for something more challenging. They will be exploring around Centennial Park on the far northeast side of Carson City. The Stewart Indian School is the site of today’s ‘Easy Walk’ led by the Carson City Parks and Recreation Department. If you can’t join them this morning, make a point of exploring this treasure on your own. A podcast is available to guide you through the history of the site, complete with narratives from some who spent their youth there. Memorabilia from the school is on display at the Nevada State Museum and plans for a cultural center are in the works. Their cemetery is the final resting place of one of the area’s most famous Native American residents, basket-maker, Dot-so-la Lee. For more information on the Stewart Indian School go here.

This month is ‘The Agony and the Ecstasy:’ a 1965 Charlton Heston flick about Michelangelo and the painting of the Sistine Chapel.

If you are interested in a nice stroll though, join Carson City Parks and Recreation for their Tuesday morning ‘Easy Walk.’ If you want more of a challenge, Muscle Powered has a moderate conditioning hike in the afternoon.

One Carson City business out of 24 that were checked earlier this month failed a compliance check by selling alcohol to a minor, according to the Carson City Sheriff’s Office.
The compliance check was conducted Friday, March 20 from 5:30 p.m. to midnight. In violation was Maverik gas station and convenience store located at 1451 W. College Parkway.

Can I just designate this Steve McQueen Day? After all it is his birthday, but it’s so more than that. The Great Escape, one of McQueen’s most iconic films, is based the true story of 76 Allied prisoners of war and how, on this day in 1944, they began breaking out of the German camp Stalag Luft III. I wonder if the casting directors knew of the connection.

Every year on March 17, the Irish and the Irish-at-heart across the globe observe St. Patrick’s Day. What began as a religious feast day for the patron saint of Ireland has become an international festival celebrating Irish culture with parades, dancing, special foods and a whole lot of green. Carson City definitely gets in on the game with festivities all over town. Corned beef and cabbage, green beer, and live music abound. If you have the kind of luck that brings rain as soon as you wash your car, please drive over to Squeaky’s Car Wash at the corner of Highway 50 E and Lompa Lane. It’s their opening weekend and they are offering free car washes and raising funds for the Carson City Community Counseling Center.

The athletics program at Western Nevada College is facing drastic cuts. A group is forming to seek ways to fundraise and keep our Wildcats in the game. Head over to the Legislature Building this morning at 10 a.m.; you’re looking for room 2149.

Grab your dance shoes and kick up your heels at a beginning swing dance lesson at El Charro’s tonight. The High Sierra Swing Dance Club hosts its monthly Swing Dance Party in the Ballroom of the Brewery Arts Center Saturday night. If you prefer to dance in cowboy boots, you can learn Country Line and Partner Dancing at the 11th Frame Lounge in Carson Lanes every Tuesday and Wednesday night.

On Thursday Jan. 29, 2015, the Carson City Sheriff’s Office conducted an “Alcohol Sale to Minors Compliance Check.” Of the 28 local businesses that were checked, four failed to fall into compliance.

This may be ‘the day that music died’ back in 1959, but Carson City wants you to find your dancing shoes tonight. Beginning swing dance lessons will be held at El Charro Avitas; go check out their brand new dance floor. Country Line dancing is taught at the 11th Frame lounge at Carson Lanes every Tuesday and Wednesday. Jimmy Mallett and Jack Clifton will be at Living the Good Life Nightclub and Bistro channeling all the swank of the rat pack.

Thanks to Muscle Powered and the Carson City Parks and Recreation Department, Tuesdays are a good day to go for walk and explore some great trails and paths around town. You can find the schedule online here, and I always include them in my list.

It’s a Jazz Extravaganza tonight as the Mile High Jazz Band teams up with Carson High School’s Jazz Band at the Community Center.

The Tuesday after a day off can feel like a Monday, but it does make the week go by quickly. It’s back to school for those attending Western Nevada College, and maybe back to work for some of those who attend the Greater Nevada Credit Union’s Job Fair today.

The weekend returns, and with it a new chance to do something fun. The Brewery Arts Center is hosting its annual ‘Winter, Wine, and All That Jazz’ fundraiser, and it promises to be better than ever with performances by Le Cirque Vagabond, Starr Nixdorf, a live Jazz Orchestra and more.

It’s National Rubber Ducky Day! I have no idea how that is relevant to anything, but now I've got the ‘Rubber Ducky’ song from Sesame Street in my head. It’s also Stephen Foster Memorial Day, so feel free to sing ‘Camptown Races’, one of the prolific song-writer’s most famous songs, instead. Keep the musical theme going today with the Carson Feet Warmers during lunch and the Mile High Jazz Band playing this evening, both at Comma Coffee.
