Firefighting agencies urge caution as hot, dry summer weather begins

A wetter than average spring hasn't dented four years of drought, with fire agencies ramping up in preparation of summer fire season in the Sierra, Pine Nut Mountains and on public land throughout Nevada.

The Bureau of Land Management Carson City District, U.S. Forest Service and the Nevada Division of Forestry warn of the dangers looming this season, with temperatures climbing and tinder dry conditions on the ground and in the forests.

BLM to Transfer Public Lands to Carson City by end of May

A patent and deed for transfer of public lands from the Bureau of Land Management to Carson City should be finalized by the end of May 2015.
Approximately 5,400 acres will be included in the transfer and are located throughout Carson City. The lands include the Prison Hill Recreation Area, Silver Saddle Ranch, parcels in the Goni Canyon area, parcels near Carson City's Sanitary Landfill, and others.

BLM cancels roundup of Nevada’s Pine Nut Herd following court injunction

Following a February court decision to grant a motion for a preliminary injunction to stop the proposed roundup of more than 300 wild horses in the Nevada Pine Nut Herd Management Area, the Bureau of Land Management Sierra Front Field Office announced this week that it has canceled the roundup with a date to be determined.

Horse advocates said the decision to cancel the roundup is a victory.

Tell BLM how you want your public lands managed. Thursday, March 26 from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. in the Sierra Room of the Community Center, join the Pinenut Mountain Trails Association meeting on how to be effectively heard by the Bureau of Land Management.

The meeting, led by Don Amador of the Blue Ribbon Coalition, will explain BLM’s Resource Management Plan and teach effective letter writing. Amador has many years of experience in land policy intervention and has been successful in getting positive gains for public land users.

Plane crash near Dayton High School sends two to the hospital

A plane crash Sunday near Dayton High School has sent the passenger and pilot to the hospital, according to the Lyon County Sheriff's Office.
The crash happened at around 4 p.m. when reports came into dispatch that a plane crashed while it was trying to land at Dayton Valley Airpark.

Partners to plant trees near Indian Creek Campground

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Carson City District, American Forests, Nevada Conservation Corps, and Alpine County are partnering to rehabilitate the Airport Fire area by planting trees starting Tue., March 10 and concluding on Sun., March 15, 2015.

This fire burned 81 acres of BLM and Alpine County land during the 2011 fire season and is located near the Indian Creek Recreation Area and the Alpine County Airport along Airport Road.

Activists rip BLM plan to remove 750 mustangs

Wild-horse advocacy groups are criticizing federal land managers' plans to permanently remove over 750 mustangs from the Nevada range beginning late next month.

House Passes Amodei's Nevada Native Nations Lands Act

By suspension vote, the U.S. House of Representatives on Monday passed the Nevada Native Nations Lands Act, legislation sponsored by Congressman Mark Amodei of Nevada's second district.

The legislation includes six tribal land measures, as well as a smaller conveyance to the City of Elko. The bill was amended to match the Senate version, which was reported out of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee in August.

Pinon Pine Embedded in a Boulder on Mt. McClellan

This large Pinon Pine has made a precarious home for itself wedged in a crack on a huge boulder on Mt. McClellan. Mt. McClellan is the large mountain visible from anywhere in Carson City.

The Pinon Pine was Nevada's original state tree. Today our state tree in Nevada is the Bristlecone Pine. Mt. McClellan is located just north of Carson City, and Carson is visible in the background of the photo.

To reach the peak, it's about a 6 mile trip up a very rough and unmaintained dirt road that begins at Goni Road in North Carson City.

Happy Friday, Carson City. Many people in our area have Facebook accounts, but not everyone, so I am pleased to bring you the event list that is featured on my Facebook page, I love Carson City.

Every week, as I have for the last two years, I follow the pages of local businesses and organizations, search website calendars, and compile a list of anything and everything going on in this community. Some of it is family friendly, some is just for adults, but all of it is nearby.

Off-Road Vehicle Contribute to Flood Damage in One Johnson Lane Neighborhood

A mountain is being destroyed, and the neighborhood below it is being polluted by off-road vehicles in Douglas County.
Hot Springs Mountain is on BLM land, and it towers right above the neighborhood known as Johnson Lane.
The mountain has been cut up by a web of trails created by off-road vehicles.
Heavy use of the trails pulverizes the soil and the trails become loose and unable to support even foot traffic yet alone the vehicle traffic. The off-road operators then cut new (bypass) trails. Ultimately the new trails get pulverized and the process starts again.

House passes Nevada Congressman Amodei's Pyramid Lake bill

The U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday passed Nevada Congressman Mark Amodei’s bill known as Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe – Fish Springs Ranch Settlement Act, by a bipartisan voice vote.

The bill, H.R. 3716, would ratify an agreement between the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe and Fish Springs Ranch to resolve a dispute over water rights near Reno. It is expected to be passed by the Senate and signed into law.
