Sierra Lutheran High School Principal, Dr. Tami Seddon announced Thursday that senior Aleyna Gilson has been named a Commended Student in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Elia Keating-McEllistrem, an eighth grader, won the school-level competition of the National geography Bee on Wednesday, Dec. 21. Her win over Dylan Friend, who finished second, qualifies her for a chance at an eventual first place prize of a $50,000 scholarship.

Bethlehem Lutheran School student Dylan Friend has been notified by the National Geographic Society that he is one of the semifinalists eligible to compete in the 2016 Nevada National Geographic State Bee. The contest will be held in Las Vegas on Friday, April 1.

Ronald McDonald House receives donation from students at Bethlehem Lutheran School

Bethlehem Lutheran School declared a "Penny War", in order to raise funds for the "Ronald McDonald House". During the week of Jan 25-29, 2016, which also happens to be Lutheran Schools week.

The school collected pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters to help the local charity but to also have a little competition among themselves. There were daily prizes for class participation as well as an overall class winner for the most points.

The Carson City Spelling Bee was held Thursday, Jan. 21, at Bethlehem Lutheran School. The sixth grade included only two finalists, Hunter Healy from Bethlehem and Anna Roche. Anna took the 6th grade Bee with the word "resilience." In the 7th grade Bee, the contestants were Meredith Kay from St. Teresa and Erika Filter from Bethlehem.

Carson City schools begin 'Trick or Treat' Halloween food drive for FISH

Friends in Service Helping, also known as FISH, will begin its annual “Trick or Treat for FISH” food drive Wednesday, Oct. 15. Carson City schools will participate in a contest for the students to collect non-perishable food to replenish the inventory at the FISH food bank. The food drive will run until Nov. 3 and will give FISH a boost for the high demand of the holiday season.

Winning essays on American citizenship to be recognized by Carson City school board Tuesday

Several students from the Carson City School District will be recognized Tuesday for their submissions to the 2013-2014 American Citizen Essay Contest.
The students will be honored beginning at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Sierra Room of the Carson City Community Center.

Among the winners are Vidhi Pandit, a 5th grader at Bordewich Bray Elementary School. She submitted the winning elementary school essay below that was passed to Carson Now by her proud parents, Girish and Dr. Su Pandit of Carson City.

Not much to sum up this morning, the first day the Nevada Appeal starts charging to read at least part of their news online. Just signed up, and it's a pretty backwards way of handing online subscriptions. Perhaps they've never heard the term "ecommerce" before. But enough about that.

Most of the news today that is locked behind the wall are stories we've already brought to you for free, such as the lawsuit alleging that state Sen. Mo Denis can't serve in the legislature while working for the Nevada Public Utilities Commission. Then there is the announcement that open enrollment for Nevada's prepaid college tuition plan begins today. And then there is this story about the committee that is looking at how Nevada funds education.
