Hundreds turn out for Carson City Sheriff's Cops and Kids fair
CARSON CITY — Despite cool weather and Friday night's snow showers, hundreds of children and their parents turned out today for the seventh annual Cops and Kids Sheriff’s Open House safety, crime and substance abuse awareness fair held at the Carson City Sheriff's Office.
By noon more than 450 children had signed up at the fair, which extended along Musser Street from Pratt to Harbin, and featured food, music and demonstrations by Carson City Sheriff's deputies. Miss Nevada USA 2010 Julianna Erdesz was this year's special guest, who met with children and their parents for pictures and autographs.
"This is an incredible turnout considering the weather," said Cops and Kids organizer and DARE officer Lisa Davis. "This has been a wonderful day."
Grocery Outlet, one of the event's main sponsors, provided enough hot dogs and prizes, it seemed, for at least a thousand. Parents and their children said the fair is a great way to meet with the deputies to learn what they do and how they help to maintain public safety in schools and throughout the city.
Started by Sheriff Ken Furlong seven years ago, the fair is designed to build positive relationships between law enforcement, youth and citizens; increase awareness about ways to prevent crime, substance abuse, violence and gangs and allow youth the opportunity to meet positive role models and participate in positive alternative activities.
Sponsors include: Grocery Outlet, Kemp’s Fun Jumpers, Benson’s Feed, Economy Speed Press, the Nevada Appeal, Justice Assistance Direct Grant, and Dan Kimm Rock It Productions.
Law enforcement officers on hand included members of the Canine Unit, the Explorers, Search and Rescue, Reserves, Volunteers in Police Service, S.W.A.T., CSI Crime Lab, evidence, detention, and patrol.
Local agencies participating included the Partnership Carson City, Boys and Girls Club of Northern Nevada, Tony Torkeo, Kiwanis Club, Karate for Kids, Miss Nevada USA 2010, Quality of Life Committee/Secret Witness, Mentor Center, the Emblem Club, Ron Wood Family Resource Center, Lee Radtke Tobacco Prevention, Health Department Tar Wars, Bethlehem Lutheran School, Stand Tall Don’t Fall, St. Teresa’s youth group, Karate for Kids, Victory Christian Center, Corrie the Clown, United Latino Community, Elk's Club, Parks and Recreation, Girl Scouts, Carson City Library.
