Five motherless bear cubs now at Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care
Submitted by editor on Fri, 08/26/2016 - 10:38amThe three bear cubs from Yosemite that arrived in South Lake Tahoe after their mother was killed on July 4 now have company. Two new cubs have arrived, one from Santa Maria and one from Azusa, Calif.
All five bear cubs are being housed at Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care until January or February, once they are big enough to go back into the wild.

Carson City staff spotted the bears in the Clear Creek area across from Vista Grande Boulevard west of Fuji Park. We would like to warn park visitors that bears might be attracted to the park because of food and trash.

JoAnne Skelly: The Aging Apple Tree
Submitted by editor on Mon, 11/02/2015 - 1:32amLast week I spoke with Cory, The Greenhouse Project manager about aging apple trees at his house that an arborist suggested he cut down and replace with dwarf varieties.
Although the apples have always been fruitful, the arborist thinks these trees are almost at the end of their productive years. Cutting down these old, yet healthy, trees may be acceptable from the standpoint of apple production, but since they also serve as shade trees, they would be a great loss in the overall landscape.
Tahoe’s own cartoon bear reeducates residents by subtle suggestion

He recently produced a film entitled Urban Bears: Keeping Nevada’s Bears Wild! for Washoe County Health District and has presented wildlife programs as a wildlife expert filming around the globe for the National Geographic Channel International and for UK’s Channel 5. Jake currently resides in Reno.
