AmeriCorps is a national program that connects individuals and organizations to help communities tackle challenges. Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties is currently recruiting for part time and full time AmeriCorps members to work up to 12-month service terms teaching financial literacy to children, teens and adults.

The nonprofit Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties is seeking applicants for a service and training opportunity being offered in the Dayton, Nevada area. The successful applicant will have a dedication to teamwork aimed at increasing access to food, thereby improving food security and wellness in the community.

On Friday, the Greenhouse Project held a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new outdoor classroom which will be used to host both students from Carson High School as well as community classes on gardening and agriculture.

An Americorps National Civilian Community Corps Team, Green Four, will be working with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Mason Valley to mentor children enrolled in its summer program.

During the team’s six week engagement, the seven young adults will serve over 150 children spread between the Yerington, Silver Springs and Dayton Boys and Girls Club sites.

Carson City’s Senator Cyclists adopted the newest biking trail in Carson, located behind the softball fields at the Centennial Sports Complex, and participated in a trail clean up Thursday afternoon despite the weather.

The Wild Horse Trail was created by then-Carson-High-Senior Connor McRae and Carson City’s muscle powered as a part of McRae’s senior project in 2018.

On April 22nd 2019, the Boys & Girls Club of Western Nevada hosted their first clean-up of Fulstone Wetlands as part of the Adopt-A-Trail program.

I asked Cory, the TGP manager, about that. He wanted to plant cuttings of a particularly tasty tomato he and the AmeriCorps interns had rooted in water, trying to reproduce it asexually.

CARSON CITY — Mark Estee, chef and restaurateur, capped off a 6-month series of Healthy Lifestyles programming and curriculum at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada’s William N. Pennington Teen Center with a full menu of Local Mushroom Risotto, Panzanella Salad and Sabayon with Berries.

About a decade ago, a group of community members organized a sustainable horticulture program targeting food insecurity in Carson City. They called it the Greenhouse Project, a not-for-profit effort to improve the quality of food available to the area’s most hungry.

River Wranglers (RW), a youth-oriented watershed education organization based in Carson City, has just wrapped up its fall season.

RW’s Education and Outreach Coordinator Julia Keane led students through different programs that focus specifically on the Carson River Watershed.

Keane came on board in October of 2017 as an AmeriCorps Member from the Sierra Nevada AmeriCorps Partnership (SNAP).

A free class designed to help veterans with their benefits will be held Wednesday, Aug. 9 at Carson Plaza Independent Retirement Living, 2120 East Long Street in Carson City.

Carson City you did it again, you lent a hand and kept our water, waste lands, and citizens safe by properly disposing of 247 pounds of prescription and non-prescription medications and 91 pounds of needles at the April 29th Prescription Drug Round Up.

Twenty-eight AmeriCorps members are scattered throughout the Sierra Nevada with the role of restoring and monitoring Sierra watersheds, educating Sierra residents and visitors about environmental issues, and managing volunteers for local watershed programs.

Several Carson City agencies are asking community members to join in a citywide effort Monday to donate clothing and basic needs necessities for homeless veterans as part of Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service.

Join dietitian Kim Mason, AmeriCorps members, and Dayton Food Pantry Director Alie Trier for a healthy cooking demonstration, followed by dinner, on Monday, Dec. 19 at 5:30 p.m. at the Dayton Valley Community Center, 170 Pike Street in Dayton.
